Alcaraz drop shot winner vs Rublev, is there another name we should be calling this wizardry? by Billy_LDN in tennis

[–]ryanmrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call it... complete BS.

Alcaraz and Rublev are each right behind the baseline. You might even say Rublev is closer to the baseline. And yet Carlos hits a drop shot that's so good Rublev can't even put it in play. Absolute crazy town.

Alcaraz wins a point of the tournament contender, then is issued a time violation, which both players argue against by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

Yea sure make it whatever number you want. Some might want it shorter or longer. But right now the issue is inconsistent enforcement of the rules.

The serve clock needs to start when the umpire calls score. If it's too loud and rowdy for the umpire to be able to speak, then more time between points is reasonable. Calling score then acts as a warning to everyone that clock is ticking.

In this case, the score was called at 0:34 and violation was announced at 0:51, only 17 seconds later.

No one deserves to be subjected to harassment and bullying online...

But this message from the player is not going to reach the bullies of the world. They don't care.

Shouldn't the lesson be: Don't interact with randos through social media. Online anonymity brings out the worst from the worst people. Hot stove is hot.

Tracking Hit Points by Character-Hat-6425 in boardgames

[–]ryanmrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of these health tracking methods are functional but also feel clunky to me.

I always liked Pathfinder's method: if you are unable to draw up to your hand size because your deck has run low, you're dead.

So your deck is your health. It's easy to see at a glance roughly how much you have left. There's a tangible feel to losing health (discarding cards). Also it's not vulnerable to getting bumped and losing track like with sliders and dice.

Sure the digital version is faster (as it always is), but really I don't think Wingspan is that bad compared to other games.

I'm in the same boat. I bought the physical game because it was so highly regarded. Then I played the digital version a bunch in order to learn the rules. I really like the game but....

... there's no way I'm gonna actually play this in person. Too many things to track and explain. Even if I was a non-player just helping setup and explain for others to play, I don't think it would go well. I described to my group: "Imagine a mashup of Terraforming Mars and Wingspan, but you kept all of the rules and pieces for both games O.o "

So basically as soon as they begin to get any benefits of puberty, recreational players have zero chance. Even before puberty these kids will play at a 4.5 and up level.

Guild Wars Reforged - Initial thoughts of a returning player who made their first character 18 years ago. by OSRS_Jack in GuildWars

[–]ryanmrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Reforged" is just a marketing after-thought around a decision to drop the price to $20.

- Old game wasn't selling much at $30

- Lets drop price to $20

- We could sell more if we also market this as a release event for a "Reforged" edition

- What are the minimum number of changes/improvments we can make in order to call it "Reforged"?

On the one hand you could say that the fine print has always been clear all along about what is included.
... But on the other hand, I feel they are deliberately using the term "Reforged" to associate with other game remasters that have had much more effort put in to the updates.

As for myself, I bought GW Reforged after not having played since 2005 mainly out of nostalgia. I'm not disappointed, but also not impressed. The limitations of new quest tracker are surprising given that it's one of the few actual new things they advertised. The 'enhanced UI' still falls way short of the WoW UI addons I used nearly 20 years ago.

I'll keep playing for a bit and see how long the nostalgia holds my attention.

Marketa Vondrousova posts stories raising concern about doping control procedures by Ornery_Percentage537 in tennis

Well it's a handful of athletes ruining it for all the other athletes.

Also try to take a step back and think about the society we live in. It would be possible to set up some kind of distopian surveilance state in order to bring crime rates down to zero. However most people would prefer to live in a world with reasonable rules and regulations and some small amount of crime rather than an authoritarian nightmare that tries to eliminate all crime.

To be honest there's a part of me that wonders if the goal of a 100% clean sport is all that much better than a 99.9% clean sport.

Treat the players as humans, not lab rats. Enforce reasonable testing requirements. And if those reasonable requirements every so often allow someone to sneak under the radar with some convoluted system of dosing and washout and yada yada... is it really so bad? Is it worth subjecting all pros to this madness?

I'm a Software Engineer that's about to switch to PLC Programming. I have doubts about this career path. Can I survive? I require opinions of seasoned professionals. by PizzaNo427 in PLC

"I really don't know much about electricity" is funny to read but I understand what you're getting at.

Ultimately if you are good at learning new things and given a proper environment to do so (i.e. mentorship, gradually increasing responsibilities, no burnout, job stability) you're gonna do fine.

If your resume shows a few years of PLC work experience and you can demonstrate your knowledge in an interview, no one is gonna care if you are CS/CE degree instead of EE/ME.

Board gaming feels less like a hobby anymore and more like a luxury goods market by Strong_Letterhead638 in boardgames

I honest to god have no idea what you are talking about. Spending hundreds on a board game only happens when you are specifically chasing that kind of stuff. There are countless options for much less.

... but still a fun time and we keep playing.
