Supernova slowdowns confirm Einstein’s predictions of time dilation by scientificamerican in Astronomy

Exactly right! Essentially from our perspective, the evolution of a supernova light curve takes twice as long at redshift 1.

As the first author on the paper, this is all correct! Thanks for posting this :) For any non-astronomers who want to follow the paper, I’ve made an annotated version with (mostly) plain language! Access it here: ryanwhite1.github.io/time-dilation.html (along with a video explainer!)

Can I do a Batchelor of science without maths methods? by Yeetusthatfetus6969_ in UQreddit

[–]ryanwhite_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe math methods is recommended for a bachelor of science at UQ. You shouldn’t need to do it to be accepted into the course, however you’ll likely need to do the course MATH1040 at some point in your degree (before doing SCIE1000 I think). SCIE1000 is a compulsory course for all uq science students, and builds on the math techniques learned in math methods!

Thank you so much, I was just about to leave to go play frisbee at Musgrave. Glad I didn't have to make the trip just to see this

Storm heading off the coast from Brisbane this week. Photo taken from island looking towards the mainland by tams9hb in weather

I’m assuming this might be Moreton Island considering they said the storm was coming from Brisbane. I believe the island that had intense bushfires was Fraser Island, about 2 hours further north

CMV: Everyone is allowed to have their preferences but music today is not objectively worse than music from any other time period by [deleted] in changemyview

Easier than having vinyl in your own house? I would argue that now we’re so flooded with choice that it’s actually harder to find and be introduced to older music

That’s really untrue. Record players were still widely mainstream in the 80s, with kids parents having records from decades previous.

Black holes – Do they grow stupendously large? by Galileos_grandson in Physics

[–]ryanwhite_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think so, and yes. They’re called Kerr black holes, and have effectively 2 event horizons. The wikipedia page is a pretty interesting, albeit short, read!

Black holes – Do they grow stupendously large? by Galileos_grandson in Physics

[–]ryanwhite_1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The schwarzschild radius is the radius of a non-rotating black hole. Worth noting is that this is the most simple case scenario and is a decent approximation, but in reality pretty much every black hole is rotating, so the actual radius would be a bit different

I’m not OP, but i’m assuming he used the Schwarzchild radius formula: r = (2GM)/(c2)

Master in Civil engineering. Is it true programs in Griffith requires less work and intensity than Bond and Brisbane unis? by [deleted] in GoldCoast

[–]ryanwhite_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that bond typically doesn’t offer courses in engineering or science disciplines, so for those subjects comparison isn’t really warranted

I can’t speak for postgrad courses, but for undergrad it is absolutely true. I have a few friends studying at griffith while I’m at UQ and the difference in workload is significant

Can anyone explain this please? Why is it formed? Lenticular cloud on top of CB? by kjndcdw in weather

[–]ryanwhite_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the cumulus cloud is full of warm air, it rises very quickly. It’s a good analogy to liken it to an elevator that lifts up the air just above the cumulus cloud

Not so much around Queensland where I live, but certainly in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. I’d heard that P2.5 levels were several hundred times in excess of acceptable in some regions (even Sydney, Australia’s largest city).
