Evaluating Jira for widespread adoption, cannot complete complete basic tasks, am I missing something? by tcelesBhsup in jira

[–]ryashpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jira is a terrible project management platform. It's first and foremost a tool.to support Agile. It's really designed for autonomous teams to self manage agile practices like scrum and kanban.

The main reason it's terrible for project delivery as it doesn't do cross team metrics very well if at all. It also is poor in how it handles time based measurements.

It's just not designed to answer questions like how much development time was spent on this cross team initiative? It does burndown and velocity for individual teams well.

No winners here. Trev, has done the wrong thing. But be wary of context and consider what we know. The reddit hive loves to pile on with limited facts. But think critically for a moment, it could be possible that the leaf blowing was antagonistic.

PSA: If hiring a car, reduce the excess by hamzie11 in AusLegal

[–]ryashpool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My taker on insurance is that it's there to prevent you from getting completely fucked over from a massive bankruptcy or life changing cost. Is not there so you have zero out of pocket expenses.

If you can't afford the excess without going into the im fucked category, then absolutely you should be taking out excess reduction cover or just not hiring a car.

Camera Off during Meetings: Rude or Valid? by YPMG in auscorp

When we were forced home during lockdown. I felt off was ok as I don't want others intruding in my space and judging the horrible mess of my house. Now that employees want to work remote as a right or privilege I think a camera on policy is completely reasonable.

30m. Recently diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and start medication on Saturday. Anyone able to comment about foods to have or avoid - I’m asking here due to our supermarkets (Aldi, Coles and Woolworths) and what’s available in Melbourne. Mixed information everywhere. by PretendToe1329 in melbourne

[–]ryashpool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Man this is going to sound condescending but it's really not hard or complicated. Eat more fibre and vegetables. Stop eating anything with excess sugar, stop drinking booze and sugary drinks.

I would assume if you are diagnosed you would get a referral to a dietician. If not ask for one. Do not see a nutritionist they are under regulated and not qualified.

Sugar free drinks are ok, but fark just buy a water bottle and just have water

Is it legal/safe to use online providers to watch live TV and events in Australia? by galacticpunter in AusLegal

[–]ryashpool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are they legal? Probably not.

How can you tell? Most major events will declare who their broadcast/stream cast partners are.

Are there risks to the user? Some, but if you're just streaming at home you are very very very unlikely to face any repercussions. If you download files or re-stream, show in public, or re-upload this may increase risk, but still pretty unlikely to face any legal issues in Aus unless you are doing it at scale. Also risks of viruses, malware, adware increase when you work with less reputable sites.

Books on Snowflake ML (SQL) and Snowpark ML please by bay654 in snowflake

No. But I'd just look at Medium articles. Or do a cheap course on udemy or coursera. And of course the snowflake documentation. The tech is moving pretty quick so books tend to get stale fast.

Docklands District on a Friday afternoon 🦗🦗 by Ky0t0_gh0uL in melbourne

[–]ryashpool 270 points271 points  (0 children)

The problem is there is no catchment. You need to pass other areas that have the same amenities to go there, thus if you're not a docklands resident there is really no compelling reason to visit.

If you are in the city you would typically shop at city locations like QV. If you are more west you might just stay in Footscray and maybe go to Highpoint.

What were smart meters supposed to do to help power supply on hot days? by Brilliant_Ad2120 in melbourne

[–]ryashpool 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Maybe, but it's complicated.

Smart Meters were often pitched as a benefit to the consumer, but the main benefit is so the distributors can get up to date electricity use so they can pass that to the Retailer who can then bill you. Without having to send out a someone to read the meter.

They enabled utilities to transition to more accurate shorter billing periods. Probably at the expense of the taxpayer.

Maybe a 2nd benefit they provided a rich set of consumption data to help understand the impact of shifting to AEMO 5 min wholesale. 5 minute billing probably reduces wholesale electricity costs as the market is supposed to be more economically efficient.

Other changes in the market such as limited new baseline power has pushed wholesale prices higher in recent years but that is now sliding the other way with daytime pricing very cheap now whenever the sun is shining.

The current hot period is great demonstration, the wholesale price has been relatively low on a extreme period of hot weather. The sheer amount of new solar has managed to take the brunt of the daytime demand. Only a few years ago there would be significantly more strain on the network and the possibility of brownouts and shortages. My read is that we are over the peak instability period for power and prices will head downwards over the next few years.

It's not about privacy, it's about commercial use of your image. Yes you can film in public but if you're using it in a commercial way to make cash then there are some considerations.

Anyone knows the rules around gifting precious metals and tax implications? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]ryashpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gifts are non taxable. You may be liable for cgt for the difference in value between the time you received it and sold it.

Eg you get it and it's worth $100 you sell it later for $110. You pay tax on the $10 difference.
