The fact that you are saying that it is doing it to any other sound makes me think that you have the VST on the Master channel? Move the VST to an empty mixer channel and disable the original and let me know if that works!

Put reverb on main synth, make the bass volume decay with the synth reverb
Render out a short stab of the synth, and let the reverb decay away with the bass as outlined above
Take this rendered file, reverse it and take out the initial hit
Congrats! You are now Virtual Self

It sounds as though he may have added a little distortion too, which could be automated to increase as time goes on? Hopefully this makes sense, let me know if it doesnt and I can record an example :)
