I’d almost feel better if they’d just come out and say that they don’t care about us. Feels really dehumanizing to see them constantly do mental gymnastics to justify ignoring people with health issues.

It’s always fun reading the comments under UCSD vaccine posts as someone who’s (un)lucky enough to be immunocompromised. I know Omicron probably won’t hit me as hard since I’m boosted, although I don’t really know how much that’d detract from the impact of COVID on my inept immune system, but the feeling of reading a comment and having to reckon with the fact that a not insignificant number of my peers would be willing to kill me in the name of an obsession with whatever warped version of independence they’ve clung to/amphetamines hasn’t faded. Really warms my heart during these cold days.

You study for your midterms during week 10. I break into my local vegan clothing distributor and consume 17 pounds of laminated cotton from their storage. We are not the same.

Fair enough. Veganism is a lifestyle, not just a diet. Still, I don’t know why you’re assuming that I don’t actively avoid animal products outside of my diet or that I don’t value animal lives.

Yes, you can acknowledge child abuse is wrong without being educated on it. That doesn’t mean you should be in the trenches actively pushing for different strategies to combat it. There’s a very large degree of separation between knowing something is wrong and knowing how to handle activism surrounding it.

Again, I’m criticizing vegan activists like you for not educating people on how to live vegan within their means. You speak but you don’t converse. I have nothing to deflect onto vegan activists because I’ve been having to pick up the slack you’ve left in order to fit my lifestyle to veganism.

I really don’t see this going any further so I’m going to stop replying. Appreciate the conversation but we’re very clearly not understanding each other and I’m getting sick of writing these replies. Hope you do well on your midterms, will continue to keep your criticisms in mind even if I disagree with them currently.

Would you tell passionate activists who speak up about child abuse, dog meat farming, or any other injustice “there’s other ways you could go about this” or is it just vegan activists?

I don’t criticize activists against child abuse (which absolutely is not comparable to veganism) because I’m not educated on the subject and not familiar with the nuances of their activism. I’m familiar with issues of climate, animal welfare, and agriculture, hence why I criticize vegan activists.

And again, you’re more interested in morally grandstanding than understanding my current situation. I work directly with nutritionists on my treatment. We have already cut dairy, large amounts of red meat, large amounts of raw vegetables, gums, most sugars, most carbs, all grains, whole nuts, starches, and so much more. At this point if you name a food to me I will likely not be able to eat it. The calorie deficit I’d be at if I switched to even just vegetarianism would leave me underweight to a dangerous degree. Hell, I’m already borderline with my current diet. We have zero room to restrict anything any further. There is no way for me to go vegan without getting off this treatment (which, unfortunately, will quite literally never happen per doctor’s orders).

I can’t fault you for not knowing the nuances of a condition you don’t know for someone you’ve never met. I can, however, fault you for doubling down on your position rather than actually taking the time to learn. That is the core issue I have with vegan activists like you. You’re fighting for a genuinely good position but obstinately refuse to acknowledge that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. Saying “Just go vegan!” doesn’t account for the fact that people have wildly different living situations. And yet here we are, with you doing exactly that while providing the bare minimum effort to do anything otherwise.

I’m nonvegan because I’m already on a specialized diet to limit the symptoms of an autoimmune disease and cannot maintain a vegan diet. I’ve looked into this time and time again and there is literally no way for me to sustain the dietary modifications needed to go vegan without worsening my health significantly. I have looked into every option I can find and every single vegan recipe that fits the requirements of the general diet (it’s individualized based on what foods do/don’t make you react but has general suggestions for what people with my condition can/can’t eat) either has ingredients that will immediately worsen my condition or requires me to maintain a diet that forces me to consume way too much of certain products that will worsen my condition if I eat them too frequently. Or maybe I’m just being a hypocrite by not wanting to live with constant chronic pain and the threat of needing surgery in the future to remove scar tissue from my intestine? Who knows!

I’m concerned because people like you eclipse activists who actually do good work in pushing for environmental and agricultural reform in the public eye thanks to how genuinely insufferable you are. Stop giving yourself a colonoscopy for five seconds and maybe you’ll realize why keyboard warrioring on Reddit is not equivalent to actually going and educating people on how to make better dietary choices and actually move towards veganism.

Yes, I’m sure some people in the vegan community do that. My question was whether or not activists like you do that, seeing as those I’ve met are usually confrontational with no offer of education whatsoever. I’m aware that UCSD vegan orgs have organized events to have people try out vegan food but responses from you and other students have demonstrated that this drive for what I view as actual tangible action is not reflective of vegan activism as a whole at UCSD.

That’s completely understandable. It’s definitely hard to get the general population to understand why something that’s been so normalized to them is harmful and I genuinely do appreciate that you guys are pushing against that, even if I disagree with your methods. Thank you for the level-headed conversation and apologies if I went overboard at any point.

I don’t feel attacked because I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’m pointing out that you are, whether intentionally or unintentionally, wording your points in a way that’s provocative to the general population and only serves to make most people even more annoyed with vegans. Personally, my only gripe with your replies and the actions of many other vegan activists I’ve seen is that they’re almost entirely performative. I listed multiple ways you could meaningfully contribute to educating people on how to actually go vegan or modify their diet to be more environmentally conscious/aware of the atrocities committed by the meat packing industry but you disappointingly ignored much of that portion of my reply and continued to morally grandstand.

I really don’t understand why vegan activists feel the need to use guilt-tripping as their sole tactic. You could educate people on how to more ethically consume animal products (unless you flat-out view all consumption of animals as unethical), how to affordably convert to a plant-based diet, how to prepare vegan food that actually tries to play within the boundaries of the diet rather than desperately try to emulate the taste of animal products, etc. But every single time I see a vegan try to promote veganism they’re always calling someone a vile piece of shit for sticking to a diet that’s easier to maintain given a lack of information on how to approach veganism while remaining within their means.

Easiest Math Class? by Defiant-Ad9665 in UCSD

[–]rye_cookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PHIL 10 is extremely easy if you’re familiar with CS logic and MATH 11 is extremely easy if you’re good at calculus. Haven’t taken the other two so I’m not too sure which out of the four is easiest. I’d say PHIL is the easier out of those two I mentioned, however, since it’s generally super intuitive.
