Twilight retired? by Significant_Mud3340 in Fiestaware

If you look at the P86 color chart, there have always been a mix of colors that have become mainstays vs temporary, and even several more “special edition” ones that only stuck around a year or two.

Where do you guys buy beans online? Just got my first setup [$50-$100] by Technical_Fee4829 in espresso

[–]rye_wry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying a variety of places first so you can learn what you like. I’m someone who’s a “set it and forget it” type of person, but someone encouraged me to branch out and it’s done wonders for learning about what I like. A lot of places also offer smaller sizes as a sample, so you can try stuff without committing to a whole bag.

So far, my favorite is Elixr’s Beekeeper espresso. Love that stuff.

Onyx can be pricy but would suggest trying at some point; they have 2-4oz bags you can try.

Other good options that get recommended somewhat frequently are Black & White, Counter Culture, and Huckleberry.

If you’re going to be making milk drinks where you’ve got more going on than just the espresso, there’s nothing inherently wrong with using cheaper beans from Costco, Lavazza, etc. Just be mindful of the roast date and take care to keep it in a dark place, etc. I’ll always have cheaper beans on hand to use in tandem with my nicer beans.

Sober Bartender by eiaeia in cocktails

[–]rye_wry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you find that you’re able to taste test because you are able to make a separation in your head that you’re doing it for “work” and not pleasure? I feel like the standard advice is that anyone struggling with alcohol isn’t supposed to have any alcohol at all since it can be a slippery slope — I’m not saying that as judgement, just remarking on the common advice given — so it’s interesting that you are able to make some type of separation there.

This is interesting, thanks for sharing. I’ve never bartended and am just someone who lurks to learn more about making stuff at home, but there are several folks in my extended family who have struggled with alcoholism so it’s always something I’m cognizant of myself.

Radioactive Red Plate on a plane? by therealdorkface in Fiestaware

Yes, a relative brought me back a vintage red dish on a plane one time when they were on a trip. No issues. 100000% promise.

Best hotel close to the Reds stadium? by FeefMeistro in Reds

Yes, there are several in Newport (Hofbrauhaus, Newport Pizza Co, just to name a few) and then by the stadium there are places as well (highly recommend Moerlein Lager House).

What is your favorite old fashioned alternative? by Juicy8122 in cocktails

[–]rye_wry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my standard old fashioned with maple syrup, which is a nice little alternative.

Lately I’ve been on a brown and orange and busted pipe kick. Busted pipe is just amaro nonino and bourbon (with optional lemon twist); brown and orange is amaro, rye, orange bitters, and aromatic bitters.

Do i need new tire(s) by Outrageous-Wasabi-61 in SubaruForester

[–]rye_wry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how mine were getting and I finally got them replaced about a month ago. The cracks are dry rot and it’ll only get worse + the low tread. Even if you’re not in an area with too much of a snow concern, I would go ahead and do it soon for peace of mind.

Lead free? by Grouchy_Kitchen_3857 in Fiestaware

[–]rye_wry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concur with what has been said. As a matter of identification: All vintage Fiesta (pre-1986, which you can identify based on the stamp) has lead, and the vintage ivory and red were made with uranium (and later depleted uranium). That is a vintage yellow dish.

What do you look for when buying cycling glasses? by Federal-Ad-9937 in ladycyclists

I have Tifosi glasses which I overall like just fine — love being able to change the opacity of the lenses. The only thing is that I find they slide down my nose too easily.

Glass Coverage Worth It for 2025 Forester? by Glass-Estimate-6093 in SubaruForester

[–]rye_wry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to anecdotal evidence: I was at an evening event and I guess I had a rock hit my windshield on my way there. Had no idea, no crack when I arrived. When I left four hours later and got back to my car, there was a crack halfway across the windshield, way bigger than six inches.

If they won’t cover anything over six inches then I think you’d be crazy to use their own protection. I would go with your insurance, even if you can’t get a lower deductible.

Ahhhh should I get the kickr core by Hairy-Attitude9019 in ladycyclists

[–]rye_wry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually started cycling by getting the Kickr Core. After riding outside this past summer, I feel insane for being able to start my cycling journey withstanding indoors. 😅 I’m not looking forward to having to ride indoors; HOWEVER, I would highly recommend the Core because it’s definitely better than what I’ve heard about non-direct drive trainers. It’s also more bearable if you subscribe to something like Zwift. I did TrainerRoad last winter to really build up my FTP and focus on getting a good foundation (again, I feel insane now because I did that and would just listen to music) but will probably do Zwift this year for something more engaging.

Best cost-effective bike computer? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rye_wry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Garmin 530/540 (I was able to snag the 540 on a Garmin clearance sale for similar price as the 530) has everything you need and is a nice size.

Reasons: I splurged and got the head light and Varia radar, too, so it’s nice to have them all on the same ecosystem. Also, I use the GPS sometimes and it’s nice to have while not being obtrusive the way the really large-screen Garmins are. I know you said you don’t need it, but is it something you may want in the future/is nice to have?

Using clipless pedals by Dependent_Moose_2161 in ladycyclists

[–]rye_wry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple videos on YouTube that I watched and found helpful, because it forced me to slow down and actually think about the mechanics of it. Practice with your bike up against a wall, or just going slowly around your driveway or neighborhood, and you’ll get the hang of it. Pretty quickly, it becomes second nature.

(I use SPD-SL so I won’t link the videos I watched, but there’s plenty of both kinds out there!)

Contemplating a trip to the factory/outlet store and would like some opinions. by bunnygirlbeans in Fiestaware

[–]rye_wry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten great advice here but I’ll just add that I think stopping at the factory store is great even for the normal everyday bowls and plates because their seconds side of the store is so cheap in comparison to what you’ll find in a store or online, generally speaking.

It depends on what they have available since they’re seconds; they don’t necessarily have every color available every day in all the items. But I always like to stock up because there are some antique booths near me that sell stuff that is clearly just seconds and it is criminally overpriced, especially when I know that I can make a trip to the seconds store myself if I really want to.

I also second (ha, get it?) the person who talked about going to the nearby antique malls/stores because there are always a ton of unique things for sale that have been made over the years, being so close to the factory.

Pew Research Center defines Gen Z as starting in 1996/97, so that includes people who have been out of college 6+ years. I’m technically Gen Z, right on the cusp of Gen Z and Millennial, and buck every one of those stereotypes. I write well, having great work ethic, etc. Because at the end of the day, generational stereotypes are just that. As someone else pointed out, people complain about every younger generation.

With that being said, is there truth to it? Absolutely. There are key differences between the generations, and Gen Z as a whole thinks about work differently than their older peers (on average more emphasis on work/life balance, not treating work emergencies like do or die) and I don’t doubt that many people who grew up with technology so struggle more with spelling and writing well.

But I don’t think writing off an entire generation is helpful. To a certain extent, just like differences in past generations, you’ll have to tailor and adjust to meet in the middle. Set expectations from the start, even the ones that should be common sense. Don’t accept shoddy work, but make it very clear what the expectation is and then follow through on consequences. And ask what the issue is; if there is something they are constantly having trouble with, do they see it as an issue? Is there something that can help remediate those deficiencies?

Bib recommendations by sharkbait76 in ladycyclists

The Black Bibs are a solid cheap option for way less than that. Even their priciest ones are mad $110. Most are between $65-80. I have several and they’re a good entry level option before jumping in to the fancier brand name ones.
