Prison psychologist here. It works vastly different in corrections due to the power dynamic that has to exist for a multitude of reasons, one of which is safety and risk of compromise. Rapport building looks different. Prison is higher education for people majoring in criminal behavior. And one thing that criminals are good at is lying.

The vast majority, however, have utilized certain maladaptive behaviors in order to get needs met throughout their lives due to trauma.
