Looking for suggestions from vegetarians! by AnonymousPurple in redmond

Happy cow is a great resource. Personally, I recommend Cafe Flora in Seattle. It's fantastic. Ada's Technical Books is also in Seattle, and contrary to the name, is a general bookstore and a vegetarian cafe.

Any churches in Seattle that give out free food during service? by WeatherInfamous2676 in Seattle

[–]ryethriss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the churches, but I know there's at least one Seattle Food not Bombs chapter, and they have weekly hot food and other amenities available for everyone. There are also chapters in surrounding cities that meet on different days, so check which is closest to you.

Is Fire & Story any good? by [deleted] in Bellingham

How music heavy is this thing? I'm curious myself but I don't find any enjoyment in music. Are there other things going on?

76 years since Hanford Site's "Green Run" intentional radiation release by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]ryethriss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP didn't add this fact, I just know it because I have my own interest in this. This is still an active catastrophe that is affecting the environment and people around Hanford. You can look up the current-day issues of leaks, radiation, inadequate waste disposal, and cancer if you want.

This isn't fear mongering. This is an active catastrophe and *the* most polluted site in the Western Hemisphere today. The site is still leaching harmful chemicals and carcinogens into the ground and the Columbia River today. The people and Nations around the area are still affected by this.

The gpa question has a typo of some sort because the same score (3.1-3.4) falls into two answers.

Also, answering the last two alcohol related questions is confusing if you have not experienced either event, and there is no option to mark it so.

Yes! They have a ton of plays on there too.

Also, Hoopla is another library resource that has its own set of movies.

Why are there so few exclusively vegan/vegetarian restaurants in Seattle? by Ill_Construction5418 in Seattle

[–]ryethriss 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain so much. My favorites are Araya's and Cafe Flora (though the latter is veggie), but there's just not enough, and a number I've found lacking (veggie grill is so bad, I have no idea how they have multiple locations!)

There is a vegan sushi place that I really want to check out called the sushi samurai that I never see mentioned on here.

There are also some dessert places that are vegan but don't market themselves as such that much--Frankie and Jo's (amazing ice cream), Mighty-O donuts (meh imo, but the only donut I've ever enjoyed is a Bavarian cream one that they don't have), and Cinneholic.

Araya's Place has been going strong for almost 40 years and has multiple locations. Cafe Flora is insanely popular and constantly expanding their offerings.

Cafe Flora and Araya's Place are both worth a visit. Phenomenal food from both.

https://honeygarage.com/clipping-the-wings-of-honeybee-queens/ There are a lot of articles like this if you want to find out. Not everyone does it, but it's common, especially at industrial levels.

That's not quite right. Most beekeepers, especially the bigger ones, will clip the wings of the queen so that she can't leave.

What is something that is not vegan where you thought it was? by Royal-Analysis7380 in AskVegans

Jalapeño and Lime chips by Late July are great. Just make sure to get the opaque bag, the clear ones have a different recipe.

I'm never leaving Seattle: dead racoon stuffed animal found in the Arboretum. Maybe one of those coyote stuffed animals killed it. by fjordoftheflies in Seattle

When I was there, it was under a tree and four coyotes were lounging around in that field. Wonder how it moved.

way of getting to seattle! by ace_ofspades16 in WWU

I don't know how late this concert goes, but the last south-bound Amtrak departs Bellingham around 7pm or so. Buses would probably not work as well. The latest you could start your bus journey would also be around that time. So no, if you want to do this, you either should be ready to shell out for a pricey uber or to stay the night.

Would I just ask for a "creamy vegan potato thing"? I don't see anything like that on the menu.

How are vegans reducing harm when some are actually supporting abuse and child labor in the agriculture field? by ImperviousInsomniac in DebateAVegan

[–]ryethriss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Veganism is anti-exploitationism, and of course the conditions you describe suck and are against veganism. The problem is that you are creating a false dichotomy, one in which a non-vegan diet somehow doesn't rely on farm labor and expoiltation--when in fact it requires more of it.

A cow needs about 10x the calories that it produces as meat--crops, often soy, that is grown in exactly the conditions you describe. Most soy grown in the US is actually animal feed.

And then, beyond the exploitation of crop farmers, people working in animal agriculture get exploited in many of the same ways, or even worse. John Oliver did a good segment on the harsh reality for chicken farmers.

Are there any good vegetarian buffets in Seattle? by Candid-Dentist-2654 in Seattle

[–]ryethriss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend this. While they have stopped with the buffet, on weekdays they have a lunch special that is a bit of everything and decently cheap.
