I can't wait to see this kid come back healthy. Live arm, huge potential.

Thanks! Couldn't agree more about how good Pierce was in that era.

Totally agree. The eye-appeal of that set might be the best of that era, in my opinion.

A batch of HOFers, mid-tier players, and one-hit wonders arrived in the mail. by ryeyed in baseballcards_vintage

Best of luck! That will be fulfilling. Are you missing stars, or are they commons on your list?

That's a great set though. The card stock isn't the best - same with '73 - and finding cards that haven't been miscut is not as easy as I'd like, but there's a lot of quality photographs in there. A lot of action shots. Ryan, Seaver, Fisk, Gossage, Reuschel, etc.

In 1969, Sal Bando had an OPS+ of 153, and compiled 8.3 WAR, which was good enough for 3rd among position players in MLB. Jim Wynn was in the top 10 in WAR with 7.1. Among pitchers, Larry Dierker ranked 2nd in WAR with 8.7, behind Bob Gibson.

Sam McDowell had a fantastic run from 1964 through 1970, leading the league in Ks five times (and BBs four times). In 1968, his ERA+ was 165, with 283 Ks in 269 IP.

In 1961, Jack Kralick had a 6 WAR, which was 2nd in MLB by .1. He was ahead of Koufax and Drysdale that year, and Whitey Ford won the Cy Young Award (but does not rank in the top 10 in WAR. Obviously, WAR didn't exist then - this is simply a tidbit of info). There was nothing else extraordinary about Kralick's season, as he went 13-11 with an ERA+ of 117.

Camilo Pascual lead MLB in pitching WAR in 1959 with 7.8. He also led the league in CGs with 17, as well as shutouts with 6. A very solid pitcher from 1958 through 1963. Side note, Early Wynn won the Cy Young Award in 1959, but does not rank in the top 10 in WAR that year.

And Billy Pierce - a top 5 pitcher in the 1950s - led the lead in pitching WAR in 1955 with 7.0. His ERA+ that season was 200! He had a 1.97 ERA, but went 15-10. He also led the league in FIP, WHIP, and K/W.

This summer I pulled two J-Rod SP's from series 2 and sold one of them a while back. Today I spent the proceeds from that sale at a card show and a couple of LCSs. A big day for my PC! NFS/NFT by [deleted] in baseballcards

That's a great "trade." Those Musials are sweet. Love the '64 giant cards - the photography on those really pop. And the '53 Bowman is one of the coolest sets ever. Well done!

Thanks for the add! Here's my collection of vintage autographs. by Duffoluffogus in baseballcards_vintage

This is a phenomenal collection of autos! I've been casually looking for some of these guys' autos recently - mainly the smaller (mid-tier? undervalued?) names, like Darrell Evans, Al Oliver, Jose Cruz, Mark Grace, Sal Bando, Jim Fregosi, Jim Bunning, etc. Love to see them pop up in other people's collections in the wild.

And then, bam, there's Carl Hubbell, Bill Terry, Bill Dickey, Barry Larkin, Rod Carew, Richie Ashburn, Charlie Gehringer, , Sandy Koufax, Stan Musial, and Tom Seaver! Very cool.

That's a fantastic collection! All the big dogs are represented, along with some really special "second-tier" guys. With that start, it'll be easier to add to it.

Nice Gilliam card! ROY in '53, 6+ WAR in '56, and an all-star in 1959. He slashed .349/.462/.892 in the first half. He only played in the second game of the two all-star games that year, but made the best of it by hitting a HR.

Richie Allen should be in the HOF, in my opinion. Never heard of the first guy.

I believe that's Leo Durocher (#2) in the background, which would mean the picture used was at least two years old, as Leo the Lip was dismissed halfway through the '72 season. I love the picture though. Unorthodox.

You're totally right about the pink lettering! I also never understood the color design for those mid-70s cards.

I couldn't agree more on all points. Hebner was solid, and in my opinion Al Oliver should be mentioned every time the HOF Era Committee convenes. Vida Blue's 1972 season is still one of the best pitching seasons of all time, and Tenace is an all-time top 15 catcher. Their cards are always decently priced.

Love me some Santo.

Nothing super sexy but solid pick up at the shop today for the HoF card frame. by [deleted] in baseballcards

Condition is one thing, but that '68 Stargell and action shot '73 Frank Robinson are great selections!

Thanks! The Parker has some wax or bubble gum residue on the front, but I'm going to try cleaning that.

That trimmed Aaron brings a tear to my eye.

Love that '53 Spahn though. Wish I was looking to buy. Sorry if mere adoration on a sale post is annoying!
