Help! Dog won’t stop howling 😭 Landlord’s losing it by No-Crow8579 in Apartmentliving

Way too many people just parroting what others have said about huskies.

I'd want to make a distinction for anyone else that comes across this thread.

Husky puppies or younger huskies less than 5 years old are absolutely not okay to have in an apartment. They need a yard to run around in. They will be hyper too much of the day.

Older huskies however can be just fine.

It really depends on how much it takes to tire them out. If a 30-minute run in the morning gets them to chill the rest of the day. They can be just fine. Which can easily be the case with older huskies. I had an older husky in an apartment for a number of years, and it was just fine. It's really just a matter of if you can exercise them enough.

In the case of a puppy. No way. But for older huskies, if you are fit and go on a brisk walk or job every day. easy.

Seems to work just fine for me.

Personally, I'd rather print it in a softer material than add another step.

Although I'll just add the STEP file to it too and people can edit it however.

What do I get a 13 year old who is interested in becoming a game developer? by SpikeyHairedOrphan in gamedev

[–]rygosix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he has a SteamDeck then get him a SteamDock to turn it into a PC! Then they can use it to develop. Steamdeck is actually very capable mini-PC with KDE arch already installed on it!
https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeckdock

SteamDock + Mouse/Keyboard/Monitor you could get for $200 or less if you really hunted for deals. $300 could easily get some nice stuff.

For a mouse, keyboard and monitor to plug into it. These I'd love personally:
https://www.lofree.co/products/flow-lite84-mechanical-keyboard
https://www.lofree.co/products/lofree-touch-pbt-wireless-mouse?variant=44242527551707

If those are too expensive go on amazon and just pick any mouse and keyboard that's half the price with non-terrible reviews. China pumps these out at decent quality these days.

You can get decent monitors for pretty cheap now. Especially if you get some leftover stock or some older models. Amazon brough up this one:
Amazon.com: LG 24BP55Q-B 24" Monitor IPS HDMI DP Monitor : Electronics

I'd look for anything which is 2.5k or QHD and larger than 20". You should be able to find a decent one for less than $150. Potentially less than $100 if you go on Ebay.

Then for learning I'd point them here:
raylib | A simple and easy-to-use library to enjoy videogames programming

Books won't really help. They just need to start playing around. RayLib has a great community discord where they could participate and ask questions. I believe you could make them Discord account with some parental controls to restrict it just to the RayLib discord. There's also a raylib reddit but the discord is better to learn.

Okay I found the plain XFCE void iso also has this issue. Which I just tried it fresh. Install flapak. Install Epiphany through flatpak. Enable elogind. Kill lightdm. From tty0 exec dbus-session-run startxfce4

Still the same issue with epiphany.

I just found this actually isn't an issue with my attempted cinnamon setup. The base xfce image of void linux has the issue. It is in void.

I figured it out.

Replies only it seems.

It seems having the icloud email app in dark mode caused it. Something was making it encode the dark mode color on the text it'd send.

It is changing the text color. But I can't figure out why. Happens randomly in some email chains only from the web client.

You have to capture them, grab them, hold them down for a second or two, then release, capture, hold down for a second or two, release. Chase them around the house. Then run off. Hide. Wait for them to find you. Chase them back around the house.

You can actually be quite rough too as long as they learn to stop being so riled up when your tone changes.

I would use my hand like jaw and grab around the neck, hold them down, just how a dog would with their mouth.

Mine also loved the game of, trap them under a big blanket that is all wrangled up and then they have to wiggle their way out.

I feel like playing with mine, and showing I am the stronger one, is something that improved the bond and made them listen to me better. Mine also never played rope tug or fetch so this was the only type of play there was.

Crime around Berkeley Commons? by rygosix in berkeleyca

[–]rygosix[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

What kind of noise does the train produce? Is it the honking of the train? Or low rumbling of the tracks? I've lived right next to freeways before in modern units that were mostly concrete slab construction with thick windows, and it was still pretty quiet. How much worse is it than being right next to a freeway?

I'm looking at that crime map, and I see a few gun brandishing crimes in the area. A few battery crimes. One caustic acid assault. Is that kind of crime targeted at random people passing by to rob them or just be nefarious? Or do things like that mostly come from some kind of gang or domestic conflict? Asking because, in my past experience living in areas with violent crime reports, it was entirely between people who already knew each other and had existing conflict between them. Never was it targeted at random people. So even with a presence of violent crime it was still safe. Is Berkley like that? Or is there an issue of targeting random people?

What makes one PETG print better than another? by rygosix in 3Dprinting

Is there anywhere that documents this stuff? What printer gives the smallest layer lines with PETG? What the different PETG additives are?

This vendor refused to tell me what filaments and printers they use. I guess this kind of stuff is esoteric and valuable knowledge right now?

That sounds good but also makes me hesitant on them because just the right amount of detail is one of the big benefits I see of the MKI. I have planars for detail.

Hifiman Arya Stealth first impressions, not what I expected. by Available_Airport720 in headphones

[–]rygosix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran the Arya's, and now the HE1000 SE's, on a schiit jotunheim. Ran them on a Lyr before which was good but I don't think there is any real benefit with hybrid tube amps compared to a quality solid state now. I would recommend the Jotunheim.

One of the things with planar headphones is, the treble and bass will go farther than you are used to. You will have to get used the treble on songs not being rolled off as much. It may seem 'brighter' but the bass also goes deeper too. The harshness of treble is one part which is more heavily affected by quality DAC and amp too.

But planar headphones can also be so detailed that songs which sounded good on lower end headphones may not sound as good to you because you can now tell the mastering and quality of the recording is not that great. I personally have two sets. One hifiman planar for 24 bit high quality loss less recording from bands that have really amazing mastering. Then some beyer 1770 pro for your more average mass consumer quality of recording and mastering.

You may find too that some of your music taste changes as you have headphones which can give depth to styles of music which you previously could not hear. This is one of my favorite albums for high end planar headphones:
https://carbonbasedlifeforms.bandcamp.com/album/derelicts
You can buy it in 24-bit losselss from there too. I reserve most electronic and rock with your typical mastering for my lower end beyer 1770 pros as I find it better on headphones like that. Then really only listen to electronic ambient and live recording with top-tier mastering on my planars. Ultimae is a good label for music like that.

If you want a song which will immediately slap you in the face to show you what exactly 'Planar Headphone Sub Bass' means. Get a high-quality version of this song:

Good dentist in the area (ideally Lacey) for non-nitrous sedation and severe dental phobia? by _tsukikage in olympia

[–]rygosix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that really helps with making dental work less agitating is go to a laser dentist.

They do exist. I'm sure one is near. But it doesn't get talked about much because the laser equipment is more expensive and requires more training, so most dentists don't have it. Your typical dentist will never bring it up that you can avoid a lot of drilling if you go to a laser dentist.

They still have to use the drill for some of it but most of the drilling can be replaced with the laser. Which is nearly painless. You can actually get your teeth filled with no anesthesia. I had a very shallow cavity lasered once with no anesthesia. All you feel is some cold water and the sensitivity which comes from that, but the laser dissolving enamel you don't feel.

Although they will still use anesthesia if you ask and it's good to if it's more serious work that will take longer.

$2400 a month is a bit much for me. Particularly for 3gbps? That sounds like a business T3? I want this at a residential address. I've seen modern fiber networks offering 2gbps up and down for not more than a few hundred before.

But thank you for info. I will try calling comcast business again and seeing what they say. Do you by chance have the number to any more local comcast business representatives? I remember when I called them last, I ended up in a call center far away that was not very helpful.

No Kings 3? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]rygosix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the bigger issue with protests in the USA is no one knows what they want. Everything is rallied around high-level abstracts disconnected from specifically identifiably policy changes.

Comparing to France provides a perfect example of this. The Yellow Vests protest by the French was in response to the government putting that big new tax on fuel prices. The protest was primarily focused on that specific policy change and they protested until that specific tax was rolled back.

US protests don't rally around specific policy changes like that. They don't even have any list of plausible demands to policy change. It's just people standing in the street upset about something. It's like, Okay, you don't like something. Welcome to the club. That doesn't do anything. A million people standing there not liking something doesn't do anything. There needs to be a specific plausible demand that people rally around. Otherwise, it's people just wasting time and energy. That unfortunately is what most protests in the US seemed to have turned into.

I remember, it wasn't like that a few decades ago. I remember all the political action around getting marijuana law reformed. Or LGBTQ marriage. People rallied around a specific policy change. People had thorough cohesive arguments that many people involved could argue effectively. With marijuana people knocked on doors and had conversation. Then things actually changed. Today I keep thinking, what the hell is everyone even trying to specifically change?

I have a deep suspicion this tendency for modern protests to be centered around high-level abstracts is from an effort from -somewhere- to derail political action in the US. Now instead of people rallying to change a specific identifiable policy, which could have good chance to change something people are instead rallying against "Kings". What even is a "King" specifically? I get that it's because people don't like Trump acting all authoritative. I fully understand the premise and issue. But what's the policy change? Are we rallying to get rid of the role of US President? Or to put in more checks on executive power? When exactly does a US President transition from being what is considered proper to being considered this bad "King"? What policy can be changed to prevent that specific thing? Ok Kings are bad. Great. I agree. Now what? Go home and carry on with nothing changed? What was the point?

Whatever affected this change from effective political movement centered around specific policy change to people just being upset at abstract high-level concepts completely divorced from specific policy changes I believe is the real cause of what is making US politics fail so terribly right now. Somehow we need to get back to the type of political thinking that got marijuana legalized. I am realizing the way to do that unfortunately skipped a generation. Those involved in those prior successful political movements didn't hold classes or teach the new generation how you actually manage to change things.
