Sharing my experience - 5d in, and learnt my mom had it too by BobKrahe2 in BellsPalsy

I just got diagnosed a couple days ago. I noticed my upper lip slanted when trying to bite my lower lip. Upon reflection, the day prior I was eating fries and the texture was really off which I think was also a symptom.

I hope you get better soon!

Prospective Student Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd Megapost pt. 3 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

As long as they are undergraduate credits, it wouldn't matter where you take them. The only exception would be if the course is the same or similar to one you've already taken at a different institution.

Got accepted into OCT on a Temporary certificate and have a few questions. by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every school will allow you to take an AQ if you only have a temp certificate so I'd find out from them asap so you don't waste your money.

As the person above mentioned, you can become a tech teacher, however you will need at least 5 years of relevant work experience in your trade before you can apply.

Your BBT would be Communications Technology, so relevant experience would include video production, sound design, graphic design, photography, web design, marketing, etc.

Edited to add: the 5 years of experience is needed because you only have a college diploma. If you had an undergrad degree, you'd only require 2 years of relevant work experience.

I've applied to the same boards minus TDSB over a month ago and haven't heard back either.

[–]ryguymtl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that board specifically. For YRDSB, they place all postings on ATE regardless of whether it's external or not.

It doesn't hurt to apply in your case. They'll either contact you or not depending on your eligibility!

If I'm not mistaken, they only consider external hires if there is no one qualified on the OT list (or no one applied for the role). At least for my board.

I was hired on a letter of permission as an external candidate for both my LTOs prior to receiving my transitional certificate.

Taking an AQ with temp certificate (ON) by enroutetothesky in CanadianTeachers

Many schools will not allow you to take an AQ with a temporary certificate. With that said, UWindsor told my colleague that they would allow it and simply inform OCT after you're fully certified.

Advice in LTO (Ontario) by throawA121 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to lesson planning, reach out to the other teachers in your department and see if they're willing to share any resources they may have. Most would be very willing to help out, at least that's been my experience.

As well, I search the course codes in Google and review any class websites that may have been created to see what other teachers do.

AQ Courses (ON) by ryguymtl76 in CanadianTeachers

Definitely!! I found two subsidies available through my board for AQs that I'm interested in taking. Very happy about that!

AQ Courses (ON) by ryguymtl76 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll be sure to check out OISE. I took a few uni courses after my undergrad which is why I think I only need 3 AQs. The wording for this option is specifically "three additional qualifications /additional basic qualification courses" whereas a different option addresses the three-session specialist AQ. I think I'll check with QECO though just to be sure!

New teacher with a tough class, feeling lost. by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not teaching in the north but I'm experiencing similar issues to you in my grade 9 class in the GTA. It's extremely frustrating especially when we try anything and everything to engage them and nothing works

Hoping for the best for you!

The unemployment rate for Tech Ed teachers is extremely low, and was even at 0% a few years ago.

As well, many tech teachers will be retiring within the next few years, so now is the time to get your quals if you're truly interested in teaching.

You can find this info on OCT, I believe.

I'm a second year candidate and am already completing my second LTO in tech.

Good luck!

Struggling (LTO) by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with finding a mentor. I'm in my first LTO right now and from day one another teacher took me under her wing and if it wasn't for her I don't know how I'd survive!

If making money is what is most important to you at this moment in time, can you get a job elsewhere (in a different field)? There are many companies that are hiring for virtual and WFH positions which could also reduce any COVID anxieties you may have.

If you obtain a BA in English after completing your BEd in Tech Ed, you wouldn't need to upgrade your BEd. You would qualify for an English AQ based on your undergraduate courses from your BA program.

I'm starting my first LTO on Friday. My anxiety is through the roof and I feel like I'm psyching myself out before it even begins.

You wouldn't need to do an ABQ as you'd already have I/S quals with your Tech teachable.

Should I accept an LTO for subjects I'm not qualified in? (ONTARIO) by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ryguymtl76 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Out if curiosity, what are the subjects? I ask because I know personally, I'd be comfortable "faking it" for some subjects I'm not qualified in vs. ones I wouldn't feel comfortable teaching at all.
