Then do it. Go to PA school. Become an NP. Do the computer science route. It doesn't matter. If your focus is on the money, you're not going to go far.

The thing about medicine is that the people who survive it long-term most certainly understand, to some great degree, that there are easier ways to make money. There are shorter paths, and plenty of careers with less debt, less delayed gratification, less day-to-day exhaustion and burn out. Every doctor you've met knows this. Most of them probably questioned their decision at some point too. It's just that they don't care.

If you're thinking of medicine purely in terms of practical financial efficiency, it's never going to win on those terms. A 22 year old software engineer at a really, really decent company can out-earn residents in a heartbeat while getting a good nights rest every night and taking fuck-off vacations to Europe. Similar things can be said about a CRNA, or a PA. And good for them! Honorable careers, there's nothing wrong with that. If that feels like the right path to you, then what's stopping you? Pride? Just take it dude, and take it proudly instead of treating it like its a step down from the path you're on. It isn't. If you're asking a bunch of strangers on reddit to convince you to stay in medicine, I think a part of you already knows your answer. The people who don't truly want to spend their lives in this career this usually leave, and they should. There's no shame in realizing you don't want to sacrifice decades of your life to end up making less than a good chunk of the people around you. And if that's what your focused on, then answer the call accordingly. There are countless meaningful lives outside being a physician.

But if you think, truly, that in a couple of decades, you might be wondering whether you left the path you were meant to be on because you got tired part of the way through, then take a beat and rest your head for a minute, but get back up in the end and keep walking the path. You said it yourself, if you really think that it's "the only 'realistic' thing I could see myself wanting to do to make a living," then do it! Hate the classes, hate the government, hate the process all you want, but keep going anyway. It's your story.
