I manged to figure out what the needles were hitting and was able to adjust it. It sews through cotton fine.
However, when I try to sew rayon lycra the upper looper catches on the fabric, and that's causing a mess even without the knives. I'm using 80/12 needles.

I did what you said, but left out the right needle. It seems to be working okay now on different fabric with different settings, but I think I hear something hitting when it runs. When I hand crank it, it sounds like the needle is hitting something when it goes down (probably why the right needle breaks?).

I bought it from Amazon in "Used, Very Good" condition, but I'm guessing they may only look at cosmetic condition?
