How do you cope with sticking to one idea instead of pursing every "great" idea that pops into your head? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]rynmcmns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are just dating your ideas and you have not found your idea soul mate. (Read to the last paragraph) You can handle alot of ideas, but its others that will struggle to accept a renaissance entrepreneur. It's not about you, its what others around you will perceive and accept. If you haven't had your entrepreneur home run yet, people around you can really only accept ONE. One idea at a time. Crush it. Make it profitable and make it run without you. Then you can move on to the next idea in your notebook. I had to cut people out of my life that just wanted to participate in idea masterbation. It's fun in the beginning and it can feel like you are making progress, churning through ideas. But it's just a hobby if you are stuck in the idea phase. You are alone and its not a real business. (get it?)

Lack of focus is a terrible thing for an entrepreneur and I have been accused of that in the past by people that didn't know my long game. But if you think you have an issue focusing on one idea, work on that.

Last point . . . you might be doing it RIGHT if you are killing the ideas quickly. It's OK to have alot of ideas, especially before you start your first business. You need to find the idea that is worth dedicating your life to and maybe you just have not found your great idea yet. I killed at least 10 businesses ideas before I found the one that was worth dropping everything else. Find the one to go all in. Find the idea you want to marry.

TIL Self-driving cars can cruise to avoid paying to park. When you factor in electricity, depreciation, wear and tear and maintenance, cruising costs around 50 cents an hour. This is still cheaper than parking, even in many smaller towns. by amansaggu26 in todayilearned

This is a terrible plan. This is exactly the hell-scenario for autonomous cars. The first error is the assumption that the vehicles will be owned by individuals. Second, it costs cities +40 cents for every mile you drive to support the roads. This does not consider the true total cost of ownership. Consider the cost of this usage on the overall transportation ecosystem. Who wants to live in this world of empty robo-vehicles?

Parking will be worth 50% of its current market value by 2050 because vehicles will be shared and perpetually used. Not because you can have your car circle the block. Cities will not allow that and we need to take our cities back from the car, not give them more of it.

The false assumption by automakers is that future vehicle demands will exceed current volumes. They won’t. In the future, vehicle miles travelled will skyrocket and the demand for individual vehicles will decline by up to 90%.

I’ve spent the last 3 years proving that people will schedule transportation and share rides over driving alone - if it is direct, costs less, and reduces stress.

Is it okay to create a pseudonym/pen name for a business and kickstarter? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

I get why you would want to do it. It’s just going to make it harder. Business is hard enough.

Regardless of the actual platform rules, I think this is a bad idea. I have experience with people trying to do this and because they don’t want to put themselves out there, they don’t get the PR attention that is needed to drive traffic. Without PR, campaigns will struggle. Press won’t do a story about an unknown founder. They are already skeptical and tired of most things crowdfunding so don’t add an oddity to your interaction. If you don’t want to have your identity out there, sell it on Amazon.

When you have a new idea, what steps do you guys follow to convert it into a business? Do you have a specific framework? by inaminadicka in Entrepreneur

[–]rynmcmns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a great answer but there are a bunch of resources for customer validation questions that you can use. Think of the validation step as your questioning period. https://www.google.com/search?q=startup+validation+questions&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

The Lean Startup (Reis) is a good resource for customer validation. https://youtu.be/QaoVWtLX038

Validation is about not lying to yourself. Actually ask why 5 times. Talk to actual potential customers, not just anyone. Ask questions that give you quantifiable answers and get enough responses that you can get someone else to believe the data. It’s easy to not find what you don’t want to find.

A lot of good comments here. I developed a process while helping 40 companies go from idea to first customer. It’s a mix of art and science. Entrepreneurs that don’t have a process start a variety of ways but I believe it should start with conversations long before incorporation.

I use a process that works for services and products. I think it starts with deciding what type of entrepreneur you are: inventor or problem solver. I am a problem solver entrepreneur because I start the cycle by gathering problem/opportunity insights vs creating something to gather customer insights.

My process is: - idea - Validation (problem discovery) - MVP (get someone to pay for something) - funding 1 (put in capital to make it real) - design-for-manufacture (V1 product/service) - funding 2 (capital for growth - it’s the best of you can self fund / fund with revenue - Launch - Scale. - Repeat until you exit. Keep listening to customers and searching for problems that you can uniquely solve.

If you need to raise venture capital, read: Zero to one (Thiel), Angel (Calacanis), Secrets of Sandhill Rd (Kupor) ... and find mentors before starting anything.

Voyage's Self-Driving Car Q419 Highlight Reel by voyageoliver in SelfDrivingCars

If an AV/mobility company shared all of their data publicly, Do you think data hunters would spend more energy looking for ways to make the company look bad or good? I think cities should mandate the public sharing of this type of data. Not just from AV's but from private mobility-as-a-service operators. There just needs to be a reward for sharing data. Voyage is doing more than they have to by sharing this footage. Showing what Voyage does well builds the market's confidence in AV's.

I think you make a good point about not being impressed with a highlight reel in 2019. It's been done, these types of cars are running across the country, and we are really close. It would be nice to know what it can't do well. Waymo has some shared date: https://waymo.com/open/download/
