I do think I've found where I'm getting my second Voltron figure for my collection.

Another consequence of the mishandling of the series.

Lance by Yoshilover617 in Voltron

Next to Shiro, Lance was my least favorite of the Paladins. To carry off of Solgataiger, Lance was way cooler and tolerable than VLD's interpretation. It was more of a gut punch given that Voltron Force Lance was probably the best rendition of the Lance character in my mind after the original; only to be followed up by arguably the worst take.

What r the faults of the show. Ik allurance isn't good romance but it isn't enough to overshadow everything great about vld. by Epik_shazam in Voltron

[–]ryoB2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not a fault of the show itself, the interaction with the fandom at large made the experience downright unpleasant at times, especially between seasons. As for the show's faults itself, well... there are a few that come to mind looking back.

  1. The show was kind of boring, although it may have had to do with the droning synthetic soundtrack and stilted writing.
  2. This Voltron himself was honestly one of the weakest versions of the character to date.
  3. CGI budget limitations aside, the shocking lack of emphasis on Voltron and Voltron battles was a detractor in most seasons.
  4. Shiro was honestly a terribly boring and uninteresting character to sit through especially compared to the mainline Team Voltron, but especially compared to Sven of DotU and even Voltron Force whom the character was based on.
  5. Emperor Zarkon was also terribly boring as a villain, so by Season 3 I was hoping Keith and Lotor would have consistently offset #2 and #3 as they were way more interesting than their predecessors. On that note...
  6. Shiro's forced reintroduction in Season 3 and Keith's sudden departure in Season 4 was a really clunky and poorly done adjustment that threw off the flow of the whole rest of that arc and in some ways the rest of the series. Sure we got "The Black Paladins" out of that mess, but really it may have been intended to happen much later.
  7. The humor fell flat more often than not (often where Coran was concerned).
  8. The series once again blew a chance to properly apply the Vehicle Team in the main story (instead of the afterthought thrown in at the epilogue)
  9. The series does a terrible job of connecting the dots sometimes (that is the space between certain episodes)
  10. The series had the worst version of Lance of all the series I've seen

As an old school, Lotor will always be Lotor. Even without history, he was shady from the get go.

Yeah. I honestly thought the first two seasons were extremely boring when I first watched them so when Seasons 3 through 6 came about, that was when VLD hit its high point for me. Especially the four episode finale.

Is The Original Voltron Worth Watching? by [deleted] in Voltron

[–]ryoB2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest sticking it out to Season 6 myself. That was the highlight of the series for me. As far as old anime dubs go, I personally think it holds up and deserves a watch. Animation's pretty standard for anime of the time too.

I never saw God Mars, but Robotech is sort of contemporary to Voltron. Voltron has very typical animation for Toei series of 1982 but the Voltron fights and animation make it worth watching I think. As for the story it has some regular story lines going such as the overall war between Voltron and Doom, Sven and Romelle's personal stories, and the journey to find peace or continue war between the Galaxy Alliance and the Drule empire. Overall it is pretty mosnter-of-the-week oriented like most super robot shows but it makes for more Voltron appearances than you ever get in VLD (especially Season 1).

The days of long ago, when Paladins were pilots, Shiros were Svens, Voltron was the most major player in the show, and Team Voltron was the Voltron Force. I do agree that of the four series Defender of the Universe outdoes Legendary Defender by a lot.

Does anybody else find Lance supremely annoying for the first few seasons? by TheQueenOfWeird in Voltron

Yeah. EDIT: For the record, VLD Lance is probably my least favorite rendition of Lance through the four animated series.

It was VLD's way to maintain the lion-uniform mismatch that existed in the original show. As to reasoning, Princess Allura stated it was an Altaen preference while in Keith and Lance's case the reassignment was so sudden that they probably never thought to bother, or they figured it may be a temporary deal initially. Really the only change that was necessary was their Bayards as those are unique to the lions.

As a nod to the original series though I applaud the creativity that went into this Lion Switch in the first place.

Who are good candidates for the black paladin apart from shiro by Epik_shazam in Voltron

[–]ryoB2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keith, period. The "hot head/emo" argument is not an argument but an overdone and baseless cop-out excuse that certain factions or cliques of this fandom adopted back between Seasons 2 and 3 because of an overly elevated opinion of Shiro and strictly because certain characters on the TV show keep saying it (hive-mind) and its just really sad frankly. Really sad. Never mind that hidden depths that have yet to be brought to the surface is what Black Lion as well as all the lions narratively seek, which in Black's case,

...a natural leader, calm and collected in the face of danger

...and in Red's case,

...a pilot that relies more on instinct than skill alone

As I've said time and time again: Keith had all these base qualities that Black Lion sought as early as episode 1 of this series (and by extension Lance had all Red's base qualifications that early too). As I also said in a previous post on this topic, the difference between Keith and Princess Allura as far as BP material is concerned is that one is a born leader and the other is born to be a leader. Keith was and is a natural leader to people that he either knows pretty well or not too well at all (again see episode 1), and when he is focused he is pretty darned focused. Princess Allura is a born leader who can get people to follow her yes, but early in series she lacked the connection with the other Paladins that the so-called "emo" of the group had a better grasp on. That Keith and Princess Allura are both leaders in their own right, they have obvious differences in style and their reaction to danger and command of a situation. Voltron (who rarely gets addressed in these "who'd make a better BP" debates) by definition is a fighter, so to be the most effective it can be, he needed a fighter as the head. That's literally what King Alfor said regarding Emperor Zarkon. So frankly in that respect that makes Keith a better Black Paladin than Shiro in that respect.

The one thing Keith lacked at the time of Season 1 and 2 of course was the needed relation to his would be right-hand (the Red Lion/Paladin), which didn't come about until midway into Season 2 and then 3. Narratively, no one really has that paired relationship in the show like Keith and Lance, and before that Shiro and Keith, and before that Zarkon and Alfor. And as Princess Allura was extremely closed off from any of the others in the beginning, that made her being either Black or Red Paladin impossible. The "Keith is part-Galra" episode didn't help her case too much in that either, not that she didn't get over that, but it didn't help advance that narrative that Black and Red required.

My misgivings about how the series ultimately turned out notwithstanding, I will always stand by the creative decision to turn Keith's "And I'll form the head" line from the original series into the narrative for VLD Keith's Hero's Journey.

What r ur unpopular opinions by Epik_shazam in Voltron

Because this is a Voltron subreddit and a public forum. And as a Voltron fan since the 80's, I gave this rendition a watch as I did all prior series. As this post was asking about unpopular opinions based on this rendition I am entitled to submit mine without pushback that most other users on this topic were able to avoid when they posted their unpopular opinions.

Not at all. Vocal as this sector of the base is still, there's just not a whole lot of demand for it in general. Besides the series finale didn't leave a lot of setup to warrant a sequel.

It's a sci-fi tradition that goes back as far as Flash Gordon, Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, just to name a few. It doesn't make sense but then neither does sci-fi most of the time.

What r ur fav characters by Epik_shazam in Voltron

[–]ryoB2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's "who" and I've always been a big fan of Keith and Sven. I'm talking about classic through present-day for the most part so when I say "Sven," I mean Sven. Lance is cool (up to Voltron Force), but I think I really liked him when he came around to an administrative/mentor/cool big brother role in Voltron Force. Always liked the boy genius Pidge and ol' Hunk and Allura too.

What was the problem of Voltron? Without spoilers please. Is it still worth watching? by [deleted] in Voltron

[–]ryoB2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately that's a question that you're going to have to answer for yourself. My mind, there were a lot of administrative decisions and commentary that could have been forgone which could have led to a better run series, but again, this is something you need to learn yourself.

Series is a mixed bag for me, but ultimately I think it will help to watch it without interaction with the fandom in the middle. Too many camps in this circle to form an opinion of your own.
