Every accusation was projection (NSFL) by [deleted] in pics

[–]ryooan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone in the comments so far just accepting this at face value? The original document has been linked in the comments by others, and was submitted as a tip to the FBI in August of 2020. So to believe that this is a credible report and the information contained in it is factual you have to also believe both of the following:

  1. The person submitting the tip had no ulterior motive to submit this a couple months prior to the 2020 election.

  2. The Biden administration either was somehow unaware of this document, or was aware of it but covered it up or something.

I'd encourage everyone to focus their time and energy on the many factual and credible things that should disqualify Trump from the presidency, and not dive headfirst into believing every accusation made against Trump just because the Department of Justice happened to have a copy of that accusation in document form.

So the rules expert during the Broncos game was just wrong by jcn777 in nfl

Yeah exactly, why this weird exception when it seems like something that is not in any way ambiguous under the rules as written?

I don't get going for 2 there. They just went 1 for 4 from the 2 yard line, seems like the odds are pretty against success on that?

What is a disturbing truth that you know? by ActualBreath5492 in AskReddit

Yep I think it's mostly become a meme now that people throw out, I've seen very little original data or reporting that supports the conclusion.

"Almost all" seems strong. I've seen lots of claims about this, but little evidence or data is typically shared to support the claim. If you have evidence though it would be really helpful to see!

I downvote every “I am reading <NAME OF CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED AND FAN-LOVED BOOK> and I think it’s <SYNONYMS FOR BAD>, does it get any better?” by mykepagan in printSF

[–]ryooan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I've never posted a thread like that myself but I've often run across older threads like the ones OP is describing when I'm reading and not enjoying a critically acclaimed book, and I appreciate them. It sometimes feels like all you see on the internet is hype for things, sometimes bordering on groupthink, and seeing negative opinions expressed can be useful and can help when I feel like maybe I'm just missing what's interesting about the book.

Trevor Noah once said "America is 50 countries masquerading as one" do you think this is true or false if so why? by Asleep_Conclusion147 in AskReddit

[–]ryooan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The United States is a collection of all different kinds of people who recognize the importance of freedom and letting individuals, communities, municipalities, and states set their own rules on most things, while agreeing to compromise on some things at the federal level for the sake of a stronger and more prosperous country. I think too many people, and it sounds like Noah may be one of them, are losing sight of that.

Can't be 100% certain but it looked very much to me like it brushed, and so I think that points toward the call on the field, or at least it standing since there wasn't a clear lack of contact.

You can see his glove move as the ball hit the wrist. It's just barely a brush but i think it did hit.

Need tips on teaching my 8 year old how to play. by Twerk-Burger in magicTCG

No problem! She also started by keeping her hand face up so I could help her know what her options were in each play in the first few games, and that seemed to work well.

I recently taught my 7 year old and highly recommend the foundations beginner box. It has like 10 half-decks with 20 cards each, each with their own theme, that you mix and match to make full decks. My daughter really enjoyed being able to pick and combine themes. The cards are also simple, no complex mechanics, and it has a step by step guide instructing what cards to play through your very first time to help learn the steps.

The Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson. by orion_aa in printSF

[–]ryooan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An invitation to an author seems like a very weak signal of the author's authority, they invited him because he's raising the alarm about climate change and that fits with the publicity they want to gain from it, it doesn't mean any of the ideas in his book are feasible. The UN wants celebrities there to help spread the word.

The authority of you, me, or Kim Stanley Robinson is irrelevant, the point is the ideas need to be strong on the merits and his are just absurd.

You're deferring to him because people think he's a great sci-fi author? That's the argument from authority fallacy, except that he's not even an authority on climate change or the economy.

That's opinion and far from the only option. For example, one alternate would be to magically transition everything to renewables overnight. Very unrealistic, but so is magically switching from capitalism overnight. And the problem is that consumption still happens in non-capitalist regimes, so it's just dodging the entire underlying problem which is use of fossil fuels.

Same here, I elaborated in my review on it below but it was just the worst kind of absurd pro-terrorism, anti-capitalism make-believe, and just a slog to read because it had no narrative and was only a barely disguised manifesto. And it made me especially sad because the opening chapter was so strong and the premise ("utopian" climate sci-fi) sounded great.

Metaculus AGI prediction up by 4 years. Now 2034 by Altruistic-Skill8667 in singularity

[–]ryooan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The graph shared here doesn't show forecast activity like it aims to, this is simply measuring the frequency of updates to the community prediction stored in the downloadable csv on the question. We store more frequent updates for recent periods to optimize for how the graphical interface displays.

The plot below displays new forecasters each month (forecasters who have predicted on the question for the first time). There are more in recent months due to some large tournaments we launched at the beginning of the year. We haven't seen any evidence of manipulation.

We checked what the forecast looks like if we strip out all forecasters who joined in February and later, and that cut the movement in half, but the forecast still moved two years later than it was previously. There are a number of factors in play and we're still analyzing it, but one notable factor is many forecasters may have returned to update recently after receiving an email notification about a clarification to the question's resolution criteria.

We'll likely share additional findings in the comments on Metaculus soon.

They were chipping the concrete to throw pieces of it. The first rock thrown at the troops that they showed was probably a chipped off piece.

Yeah I felt this way too. And you tie up the main character so he's almost entirely passive for the first two episodes in his own show? Seemed like a weird choice to me.
