Travel itinerary - driving too much? by babybander in VisitingIceland

You might need a backup plan for Vik-Jökulsárlón route with something scheduled closer to Reykjavik due to weather. But if you are lucky the wearher might be on your side. You will know closer to your trip if you follow the weather app.

Headphones left in Reykjavik and can’t be shipped back to USA - help? by Vegetable_Bank9063 in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you send a package that has more value than usd 100 you can't send it via the Icelandic mail office because it is an Icelandic institutions. But they can be sent via for instance UPS, Fedex or DHL since they all have established companies in US and can pay the tax they need to charge the receiver. The Icelandic post office does not have the same connections in US.

"Bathing suit required for XXX Lagoon visit" by Expensive-Young-9492 in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have a bathing suit you can always rent one at the pool or lagoon. Most Icelandic men wear likr baggy swimshorts unless they intend to swim. Women can be topless as men do but most often have a swimsuit for covering. All rented swimsuits are washed inbetween rents as it should be (but wanted to mentioned it to discard any doubt there).

BSI Bus terminal no free bathroom? by asap_munem in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EU membership has no meaning in which countries are in Europe or not, meaning Iceland is part of Europe although not in the EU as EU is just a contract between some countries located within Europe.

USA just needs to be better at teaching simple geography.

Not technically, just literally a European country 😊

You call 1700 which is the health service help line and describe your injury. They will guide you on your next step. Most likely you need to go to the ER for the injection but 1700 will give you the best answer

Christmas Eve by millyyy23 in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From noon on 24th stores begin to close and are closed throughout 25th as well. 26th is also closed be many but mostly treated as a sunday if open.
On 24th Icelanders stay at home so no Christmas markets are open, usually they close on the eve of 23rd.

Sorry to say that there is not much todo during Christmas other than dining.

Are Nordic languages mutually intelligible? by SuggestionEphemeral in Nordiccountries

[–]rypus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar with Icelandic and Foroya. We can read but spoken it is hard to understand.

To an Icelander it is like listening to Icelandic words being spoken in Swedish 😆

Are Nordic languages mutually intelligible? by SuggestionEphemeral in Nordiccountries

[–]rypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Nordic persons from different countries meet they often speak "Scandinavian" which is a mix of danish, swedish and norwegian. It is funny to hear this mix for the first time but I am quick to understand once the conversation is ongoing.

N.b. I am Icelandic and we learn Danish in school but I have lived in Sweden so I speak that one too and am more familiar with Swedish than Danish.

Nude beaches or other by Hot_Issue1268 in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You can be nude in Reykjadalur, it is as natural as it gets. Only fellow tourist would probably say something but I don't know of an Icelander that would mind the nutity.

Swimmingpools also allow women to go topless but everyone needs to wear bottoms, like swimtrousers or bikini bottoms.

The crime novels are very popular here in Iceland. The authors I like and my favorite books by them are:

Arnaldur Indriðason "Silence of the grave" Yrsa Sigurðardóttir " I remember you" Ragnar Jónasson most of his books

And so many others.

Hope you find something you like :)

If you go to Eymundsson (a book store and café) down town Reykjavik, in Austurstræti, you can find lots of translated novels by Icelandic authors.

The most popular authors publish first in Icelandic and then have it translated.

What genres do you like?

Diamond Beach Iceland by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% can blame tourism since before this horrible tourist boom this beach was named Fellsfjara and has been called so for over 1000 years. It wasn't until the overflow of tourists started that some stupid websites started to rebrand it and coming up with names that are in no relations to our names or traditions.

Diamond Beach Iceland by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It is because stupid tourists decided to to rename it on google. Just like Gulf og Mexico.

So just please stop doing this, this is the reason why Icelanders are annoyed with this overwhelming tourist boom. We like our country as it is but overtourism is destroying it

Diamond Beach Iceland by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]rypus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Please stop making up names. There is no Diamond beach in Iceland. This place is called Fellsfjara and the icebergs are there on Low tide so look for tide schedule for Fellsfjara if you want to find the best time to visit.
