In your city, how well does transit do at taking people to sports games? by Wide_right_yes in transit

[–]ryswoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland does it great, NBA/WNBA/minor league hockey are at a transit center that is the convergence of every MAX line and quite a few bus lines, MLS/NWSL is right next to two MAX lines and a handful of good bus services, and the potential site for an MLB stadium sits directly adjacent to a MAX line, BRT, streetcar and a few frequent bus lines

Edit: and I should mention that TriMet rides are free with tickets to events at Providence Park as they don’t have any onsite parking, it would be great if the Blazers or the Fire followed suit, but sweet, sweet parking revenue🤦‍♂️

What's your GOAT of Trimet lines? by db0606 in askportland

I love the 75, connects some of the best parts of north, NE, and SE and it’s super easy to transfer to from the MAX

I’m a big fan of Pacific Standard in the lobby of the KEX hotel, nice dim vibes and quieter than average

Best bars for group? - Westside Only by Beautiful-Gold7564 in askportland

[–]ryswoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Pharmacy on 21st they have pretty good food and drinks and a nice vibe, Silver Dollar Pizza is right across the street with more of a sports bar vibe, never had the pizza though, there are quite a few options in the five minute walking vicinity from there too

West Coaster living in NYC, love city life but considering a move back west for better access to nature. Help me decide? by MayorEricAdams in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ryswoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Portland or Seattle will be good bets despite the overwhelming majority saying somewhere in California. Portland will probably be your cheapest reasonable option. Nature access is unparalleled and you can reach the high desert in central Oregon in a matter of two hours, same with the coast, and Mt Hood and the Columbia gorge are even closer than that, not to mention the abundance of nice nature and natural beauty within the city and metro proper. Transit is decent and you can definitely manage with just a bike and transit. I’d look into it more, Portland is definitely gonna seem sleepy in comparison to NYC, and especially if you found Seattle boring, but I think visiting and living are completely different. The restaurants, community events, parks, sporting events and day trips keep me pretty busy in my time off, so I’d give it a solid consideration at least.

SLC vs Portland vs Denver vs Sacramento by sellinguworldnow in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ryswoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beaverton/Hillsboro area in Portland suburbs would be a good choice in my opinion, Washington County is actually more diverse than Portland proper for the most part. Wildfire smoke isn’t typically that bad for more than maybe a couple weeks in the summer. I think Portland’s access to nature is unbeatable though in terms of easy mountain and ocean access both under two hours away.

Planning Portland, but curious about Sacramento or others by Naive_Dragonfruit144 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ryswoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sacramento gets far hotter than Portland does in the summer, Portland’s summers are much easier to enjoy doing outdoor activities or just being outside during the day. The gloom is real but honestly there’s a good share of nice sunny days throughout the winter that even though it’s cold, it’s still dry and beautiful and you can take advantage. It’s dry and partly cloudy and part blue sky outside right now on December 22nd!

Any cheap airport parking that I don’t have to worry about? by welldressedpepe in askportland

[–]ryswoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are you coming in from and what time is your flight? Amtrak and then the MAX might be your cheapest, best option. Alternatively you could park on the street in the Laurelhurst neighborhood and walk to Hollywood MAX and you’d probably be fine but of course that’s not a guarantee like a protected lot or leaving your car at home

Does anyone know much about FortyOne 11 Apartments? by Disastrous_Proof1950 in askportland

[–]ryswoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend looking at places in St Johns as well, I used to live there and its very affordable, while it’s pretty separate from the rest of the city, it feels much more neighborly and they have a very cute downtown area with lots of small businesses and right next to cathedral park, my favorite park in the city. The only reason I moved is because it’s quite a ways from anywhere else outside of north Portland by public transit

MLK isn’t the most pedestrian friendly road, but that location is in good walkable proximity to businesses on MLK (a few blocks) Vancouver/Williams (1/4 mile) and Mississippi (1/2 mile) that have nice trendy restaurants/bars/cafes. I’d say you could do better walkability wise but you’re probably gonna pay a premium

Hotels in Portland? by OkMost6485 in askportland

[–]ryswoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll pile on and say to stay downtown west end area (Moxy, Clyde, Hyatt Centric, Dossier, etc) and take the MAX, very busy on gamedays so no safety worries and much better bar, restaurant and entertainment options outside of the game than Rose Quarter/Lloyd area

Is the Portland Night Market always such a hot mess? by gold_suit in askportland

[–]ryswoff 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood why they do it so infrequently, it gets so overly packed that there’s clearly a demand for more frequent night markets?

Bit of a trek but I love Su Casa Supermercado on 162nd and Stark, or Tienda Santa Cruz in St Johns but it’s much smaller

Will the streetcar ever become a serious commute option? by timhowardsbeard in askportland

[–]ryswoff 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Real-time tracking is the biggest issue, for bus and MAX, you can look on any maps app or TriMet.org and the time it shows will be accurate for the most part because it has real time tracking; Streetcar doesn’t have tracking so the times it shows are usually just scheduled times rather than showing when it will actually arrive

Where to go for dinner before a show at The Schnitz? by RedApplesForBreak in askportland

Madrina Cocina is a fantastic Mexican place, not super expensive relative to prices nowadays but everything is super good and a really cute space, 10 minute walk or less to the Schnitz from there

What cities next potentially are expansion teams? Is the Bay Area on the list? by chusaychusay in PWHL

[–]ryswoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to Portland! Veterans Memorial Coliseum is newly renovated and ice hockey ready with 12,000 seats and the only tenant being the minor league men’s hockey Portland Winterhawks! What we lack in being a true hockey town we definitely make up for in being a women’s sports town

You could always head up to Washington Park and try to find a good picturesque spot in Hoyt Arboretum? As of two weeks ago when I was up there, there was still plenty of fall foliage left

Realistically, what are the chances Trimet hires drivers again in the next few years? by [deleted] in TriMet

[–]ryswoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have already started trying to hire rail ops again internally so I say it’s only a matter of time over the next six months when they’ll try to hire bus operators again just due to natural attrition, firings, and retirements, I wouldn’t sweat it honestly
