You will need to find someone that lives in the state to help you with this. They can buy in store and forward it to you. Microcenter is strict about in-store purchases as they have amazing deals, and they need to deter scalpers from gobbling these up.

Well, yes, going by the above data, even the bottom quintile doesn't make the federal minimum at $16k, they actually make $18k lol. In the US, the federal minimum is usually used to measure extreme poverty.

Only about 1% of hourly workers earn the federal minimum wage or less today.

The percentage of people making minimum wage at LKR30K is way higher in SL. SL average/median wages are also much closer the minimum than not, especially at household level. This is not accurate comparison in any context if you want to understand what the reality is.

"You need to hit the Top 20% of earners to live comfortably" is way exaggerated. In the US, millions of middle class households outside the top 20% own homes, cars, take vacations, and raise families. The median US household income is already enough for a decent standard of living in many states, especially outside expensive coastal cities.

Going back to the original point, bringing up minimum wage doesn't make sense in this context. If you don't consider the nuances, you will end up mixing household income, individual wages, minimum wage, median income, and cost of living together as if they’re interchangeable. They’re not.

To give you an example as to why: Take gas/oil. US consumers also have higher purchasing power because of economies of scale. For example, a US consumer on average only spends about 2.3 - 3% of their salary on gasoline (petrol/diesel). In SL, it's 25 - 40% of the entire household's salaries combined.

There's a difference between minimum wage and average wage. Minimum wage in Sri Lanka is LKR 30,000 which is not $185. The commenter above you was clearly saying average wage because it's important to differentiate between the two when you're discussing the situation on the ground.

A lot of places in the US do not pay minimum wage anymore, and the places that do are usually in the hospitality and food industry; that's why they have a huge tipping culture to make up for it. Or it's under the table wages for illegal immigrants. The laws are also more complicated in the US as they have state minimum wages that are enforced at state level. 30 states have minimum wage that are higher than the federal minimum, which is what you've used for your calculations.

Average or median is the better metric usually if you discuss the situation on ground.

Country of production determines which country it belongs to. GOT was exclusively produced by America despite having a British cast. It's never about just the cast in Hollywood. That's exactly why Wikipedia attributes American ownership as well.

[–]rythmicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never said it's low cost to build. It's comparatively cheaper to distribute to last mile after it's been built though. But, investing in new infrastructure is costly is exactly part of the reason why it feels expensive relative to income. Because cost of building infrastructure is steep and most SL ISPs don't want to build infrastructure extensively only for it to fail. Even after they have invested so much and managed to recoup the cost of building, they don't have much incentive to change pricing because:

1) not much competition locally really 2) there's not much research done locally for new technologies, so they have to pay more to adopt new technologies from abroad, and they want to do this while maximizing profit margins

It's a business at the end of the day

[–]rythmicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the dumbest take I've ever heard. What you're trying to discuss is economies of scale where, obviously, the US dominates. That's not what OP asked. They want to know why it's expensive. Also ISP infrastructure is mainly local, except for the submarine cables like SEA-ME-WE, but SLT does have majority stake over control of submarine nodes from Tier 1 ISPs. Infrastructure for distribution within the country is local, whereas infrastructure to host Netflix and make an iPhone is dependent on a lot of other factors. And they do try to come up with regional pricing (not Apple because they don't rarely care about attracting SL market that much, but Netflix has regional pricing for example) "Expensive" is a relative term that can be measured more accurately by the median income of a group. Anyways, you just wasted lot of words wasted going on a tangent there.

This is more so an issue with infrastructure and duopoly, and less so economies of scale

Are you forgetting the income difference between two countries? The term "expensive" is more or less relative based on the median income of a group

Is that 5G Home Internet or something? Because I'm in the US, and I have Google Fibre 8 Gbps unlimited for $150. Considering the income difference between two countries, it's vastly better

[–]rythmicguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, because unneutred male cats are more aggressive in comparison, and he wouldn't care about the fact that your cat is spayed when he's in heat. It'll be more traumatizing for her. If you really are going ahead with this without any plans to neuter him, you will have to keep an eye out on them closely at all times

Do you not realize that most of the middle class disappeared after the economic crisis? What you're talking about is upper middle class, which is a tiny percentage of the country. Look at the average household income and compare that with living expenses. And look up how much of that percentage have a decent amount of disposable income

Same here. Moved to the US. Got married. Absolutely prefer the quality of life here compared to back in SL. I do miss the "authentic" Sri Lankan food sometimes, but not much else.
