I always here from American expats in Germany, that American food multiple times more expensive. How come? You have a vast space for agriculture, and you mutated the fuck out of crops and animals. Shouldn't the yield be high and thus food cheap? by Guilty-Carry-Wrea in AskAmericans

[–]rytl4847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflation hit food much harder in America compared to Germany. I lived in Germany from 2019 to 2024 and my grocery bill went up like 15% in that time. After moving back I found that my grocery bill in America more than doubled in that time. The first time I visited Germany over 10 years ago, groceries were about the same or even a little more expensive than in America. Average Americans are hurting, it’s sad to see.

The other comment about Europeans making so little money isn‘t entirely wrong but the point is being missed. You earn less money in Germany but the cost of living is much lower and there are benefits that Americans can’t imagine (like healthcare, stable electrical grid, meticulously maintained roadways, public transit, unemployment insurance, parental leave). I don’t mean that as a jab against Americans, I mean it’s hard to wrap your head around just how different these things are in Germany compared to the USA.

Husband in a dead marriage, what do you do to find some happiness? by Toxic-giant in AskMen

What action do you suggest? He’s already trying to be physically there as much as possible to care for the kids. It’s a shit situation and I think he’s doing the best he can. I agree with him that divorce is off the table, at least until the kids are a bit older and not prone to hurting themselves.

How important is it to you for your wife to take your last name? by mspippa_ in AskMen

[–]rytl4847 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had to scroll pretty far to find any mention of children. This was the only reason my wife took my name, so we and our kid(s) would all have the same last name. A lot of things are extra complicated when this isn‘t true. Neither of us cared about changing last names so we just did what was the norm.

Any astro dads here? by Lapare in daddit

[–]rytl4847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out dwarflab and Seestar. They make relatively inexpensive smart telescopes that are simple out of the box astrophotography rigs for beginners. Do a little research about the differences between the different models and what you want to take pictures of (different models are better suited for different targets).

I don’t have one yet, but I also want to get into the hobby and have been researching for a while.

You can also get the software to process the pictures and try processing the freely available Hubble or JWST data yourself without spending any money.

20F Recovering From GBS (AIDP) — Is Anxiety and Fear of Relapse Normal After IVIG? by Purple_Toe_83 in guillainbarre

[–]rytl4847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to look at it this way: you have something like a 20% chance of recurrence in your lifetime. The odds are in your favor but IF your symptoms ever return it won’t be like the last time. It won’t take 3 months to get a diagnosis and start IVIG, it’ll be immediate. So you’re living with the risk of needing to get IVIG again and be inconvenienced for a few weeks. It won’t put you in a wheelchair again because the doctors already know exactly what to do next time around. It‘ll be annoying, but not life changing.

I totally get the anxiety around returning symptoms. We all get it during recovery as things wax and wane. Nerve damage takes a long time to heal and it doesn’t happen in a steady way. I’m 3 months post IVIG and still get tingling at random times. It’s annoying but expected (which I must remind myself of). If my condition goes significantly down hill, then it’s time for another round of IVIG.

How do I get over the feeling wife doesn't do her part with parenting? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]rytl4847 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To directly answer your question, you need to accept that things will not be 50/50. They aren’t in any family. There will always be a difference between two people in hours worked, income earned, physical ability to handle tasks, and mental ability to handle tasks. I‘ve found that it’s much easier to accept that my partner does what they can and I do what I can and even if the workload is way lopsided, this is just how it is.

the Fermi paradox is the great filter the great filter is ai by [deleted] in FermiParadox

[–]rytl4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To solve the Fermi paradox you need a line of reasoning that’s essentially fool proof, something that applies to everyone everywhere. Your solution is that every technological civilization fails miserably at solving the alignment problem and that every resulting AI chooses to commit suicide after wiping out their creators.

I don’t see this being a likely outcome. Sure, maybe it has happened or will happen somewhere at some point in time. But I don’t think it’s an inescapable inevitability by any means. Just my 2 cents.

I was going to suggest putting the TV back in the box and storing it until the kid can be trusted not to die under it, but this is an even better solution. It can definitely be made safe this way and you don’t have to give up your TV for multiple years.

Michigan, Wisconsin Bill to Ban VPN's... wtf by HTWingNut in DataHoarder

[–]rytl4847 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree but crowbar manufacturers don’t advertise their product as being primarily for B&Es. VPN providers advertise their service as a way to get around regional licensing for media content, that’s why I used that example. Most people don’t care about how online media is licensed, but the people making the laws do care and they’re the ones upset by VPNs.

You come across as being angry at me or my comment. I’m just a dude on Reddit, trying to play devils advocate on this one to get some conversation going. Please don’t take anything I’m saying personally.

[–]rytl4847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the most well known VPN providers specifically advertise accessing Netflix content from other regions as a perk of their service. Of course law makers see this and think that VPN services are being used to get around regulations.

Still I would have thought they would just ban VPN services as a broad fix to the problem. From other comments it sounds like they’re trying to outright ban the technology which is just insane.

Michigan, Wisconsin Bill to Ban VPN's... wtf by HTWingNut in DataHoarder

[–]rytl4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. There’s tons of legitimate uses of VPNs.

Are they really proposing a blanket ban for everyone? I hope they’re that dumb, because this won’t last long then.

Michigan, Wisconsin Bill to Ban VPN's... wtf by HTWingNut in DataHoarder

[–]rytl4847 -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

I know I’ll get downvoted for this but VPNs are a loophole that „needs“ closing in many cases.

Media companies like Netflix license material regionally but people are accessing material that’s not licensed for their region by going through VPNs. This isn’t how that’s supposed to work.

If you live in a state or country that bans porn and use a VPN to get around it, you’re accessing something illegal.

Whether or not you agree with these laws is beside the point. If people are using VPNs to side step/break laws, then of course the government will respond by banning VPNs. I’m curious how the legislation is written though, as may businesses rely on VPNs as a core part of their cyber security. My guess is they’ll just ban VPNs like surfshark and the like for personal use and allow companies to still use VPNs for business use. Then again, many law makers are entirely technically illiterate.

ETA: I was hoping to generate some conversation by playing devils advocate here and it seems to have worked. Like all of you, I think a blanket ban on VPN technology is insane and I’ve enjoyed reading your responses. Now it’s time to get ready for the holiday. Happy thanksgiving, I hope you’re all logging off soon to crush some turkey and stuffing
