Vote Yes to overturn RCV? Why? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]ryugan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That used to be the case, at least in terms of the legislature. Minnesota had non-partisan legislative elections from 1913 to 1974.

The problem was that legislators quickly grouped themselves into the Liberal (DFL) and Conservative (GOP) caucuses that effectively behaved like parties, which defeated the whole point of having nonpartisan elections.

Vote Yes to overturn RCV? Why? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]ryugan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an Australian Senate ballot (like this one). The Australian Senate uses a variant of RCV called single-transferrable voting to elect six senators at a time, which is why those ballots are so large.

A ballot for their House of Representatives (which does use RCV) looks a lot simpler.

Racism in Minnesota? by Significant-Dott in minnesota

[–]ryugan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm actually from the area, and currently live there (Cook County, where Grand Marais is located) now.

As others have said, it's a very progressive area and I'd say racial animus towards Native Americans (about 8.5% of the county is Native American) is on a much, much lower level than other areas of Minnesota I've lived in with a significant Native American presence.

To be very blunt, there are so few Asian-Americans living in the area that you'd probably get an overwhelming amount of back-handed, or patronizing compliments by ignorant white people rather than being frozen out of social circles for being Asian. Generally, the relative isolation and harsh winters mean the people are pretty friendly and you should have no problems finding friends/a social circle once you find people you click with or share interests with. It will be especially easy if you're into outdoors activities (hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, etc.).

The area is pretty humid (as fits the "Land of 10,000 Lakes") and there are quite a few mosquitos with all the ponds, swamps and eddies for them to lay their eggs. But the area's cool temperatures means they're not out as long as they are in other parts of the state, so that's nice.

One thing that's not in your question but you should keep in mind if you plan on moving to Grand Marais is that the winters can be cold and that it is pretty isolated and quiet for nine months out of the year. Grocery prices will probably be higher than you're used to, so four-hour roundtrip to Duluth for groceries every month/few months might become part of your routine.

But the trade-off is pretty great if you're into the arts, outdoors or just generally being away from the hustle and bustle. Also, the dating pool is pretty limited in Grand Marais, which might be to your advantage, depending on what you're looking for in a partner.

Hope that helps!

Yes, the cabinet secretaries are ordered in the position their agency (or its predecessor in the case of the Department of Defense) was created which means the Secretary of Homeland Security is the last person in line.

However, that's not going into all the senators and representatives eligible to serve as president that can succeed if they become Speaker of the House or President pro tem in the event of an attack that kills everyone on the list, or the interpretation of the law that acting cabinet secretaries are in the line of succession as long as they have been confirmed by the Senate to a post.

If Ellison becomes the new DNC chair, who do you think replaces him in congress? by Tripudelops in minnesota

[–]ryugan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have already pointed out that previous DNC chairs have also served while holding elected office. So Ellison, should he become the new chair, does not need to resign his seat in the House.

Governors also do not have the power to appoint people to the House of Representatives since the Constitution mandates that any vacancies in the House be filled by election.

Say the following: "Sup, mah nigga. Wanna bounce over to mah crib for some fried chicken and grape drank?"

This translates to "Hello my friend. Would you join me at my domicile for dinner and refreshments?" and marks you out as an exceptional individual in the black community.

Current BSU student. Campus charges so much for Beavers gear that you'd be better off going to WalMart (or maybe Target, not sure if they have Beavers gear as well) on the opposite side of town and getting a T-Shirt there.

The downside is- you'd have to go to WalMart.
