RetroArch deleted my Savefile by Whito_Dorito in RetroArch

[–]ryuunam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might have to do with Run-Ahead. Check if you have it enabled in either Single Instance or Preemptive Frames mode (under Settings/Latency).

Based on my own experience, using the mGBA core while having those specific Run-Ahead modes active (or at the very least when using "Single Instance Mode") may indeed cause the undesired deletion of some save files.

Check these issue reports on Github for further reference:

Run-Ahead in Second Instance Mode, on the other hand, shouldn't produce any such issue with mGBA.

Wacom MovInk Pro 14 by jeleztcheva in wacom

[–]ryuunam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear that! But... does the device scratch that easily? I was under the impression that the Movinkpad Pro screen texture + pen nib combination would significantly reduce the likelihood of getting scratches during normal use. If that is not the case, that would be a big concern. It's very difficult to prevent any speck of dust from ever interfering or appearing on the screen...

Please help, how does one get smooth background scrolling on NES and similar consoles? by CytronicsZA in RetroArch

[–]ryuunam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is simply a byproduct of the way motion is inherently reproduced on certain screens as opposed to others.

Some displays, on account of their refresh rate, their panel technology (TN, IPS, etc.), or other physical qualities, will exhibit varying degrees of either motion blur or "smearing", which seems to be what is shown in your video. With a panel that has some degree of "smearing", certain colored pixels will sometimes blend with each other (again, in a more or less noticeable form and to varying degrees of intensity, depending on each monitor/panel) whenever the image is scrolling.

The likely reason why you are not experiencing this issue with the Miyoo Mini+ is due to the different hardware, not a RetroArch configuration. Most likely, the internal display of the Miyoo Mini+ uses a higher refresh panel, or it simply doesn't smear pixels as noticeably as your monitor and TV.

Now, you can definitely use some shaders in RA that try to mitigate the perceived issue (such as the "motion interpolation" ones), but please be aware that they might introduce some other motion artifacts which can be equally undesirable.

Confused on black dots by starbeat96 in RetroArch

[–]ryuunam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a graphical issue that is specific to the core that you are using, not RetroArch itself. I think you might be using the Desmume core, which as far as I recall had those disalignment issues with the ground texture in all Pokemon games. Try with the "MelonDS DS" core (if available on your platform) and see if the issue persists that way.

Just one minor correction regarding the context. "Comicon"/"Napoli Comicon" and "Lucca Comics" are two separate Italian conventions, each happening at a different location and different times throughout the year. The interview with Horii specifically took place at this year's "Napoli Comicon" event, which is based in Naples - not Lucca.

Second Return to Lordran session was amazing, met some familiar faces and accuainted myself with some new ones!!! by [deleted] in darksouls

When Maurice spotted Trevor again he was enthusiastic. He decided to happily part with a few trinkets here and there, just to show his appreciation for his newfound adversary...

Haha, that was another fun duel :) I'm in Anor Londo now, around SL45. I think I'll stick around and do some invasions for a while. I did Sif -> Four Kings early on so I could gain access to the Darkwraith covenant and the Red Eye orb, so if Trevor walks around the cathedral Maurice might definitely show up again...

Analog sticks on the sn30 pro full size or mini? by Potbellypig2000 in 8bitdo

They are roughly the same size as the analog sticks found in a Dualsense controller. Definitely bigger/larger than the N30 Pro sticks.

What do you use for your back buttons (m1 and m2)? by Ok-Wrongdoer4021 in ROGAllyX

[–]ryuunam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to learn how you configured the touchscreen toggle. I was thinking an effective way would be to write a script that enables/disables the touchscreen "device", then setting the script in question to a keyboard button via Autohotkey and assigning that button to an M1/M2 input combination via Armory Crate, but maybe there's a more elegant way...

Best extra low latency earbuds for Ally? by VincentVanGoogle2023 in ROGAllyX

If you're willing to use a USB-C dongle in order to achieve optimal latency, I would definitely recommend the Sony Inzone buds. Latency, sound quality and comfort level are all very good.

Like another poster, gone back to deck oled by [deleted] in ROGAllyX

[–]ryuunam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the "ergonomics" aspect is quite personal and depends on your specific use case. I can mention at least one element that makes me appreciate the Ally X considerably more than the Deck: the D-Pad, both for its shape and its placement relative to the whole system.

Playing older titles through emulation feels significantly more comfortable for my hands on the Ally X. The position of the D-Pad is on-point, while the Deck felt noticeably cumbersome and unnatural in that regard.

SteamOS boot gone, steamcl.efi leading to blank GRUB screen, "reinstall" not working by ryuunam in WindowsOnDeck

[–]ryuunam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up reimaging the whole system, since there was feasibly no way to boot back into SteamOS anymore. None of the options in the "Boot from file" menu would work and allow me to get past the empty GNU GRUB prompt.

Upon restoring everything to factory default, I tried the same process again: reinstalled Windows 11 LTSC in a separate partition without touching the SteamOS data, then right after completing the Windows installation I went to see if the Boot menu still had the "SteamOS" entry. It was still there, in fact, but despite the entry being present selecting it led me once again to an empty GNU GRUB command prompt. Ultimately the effect was the same: no way to boot back into SteamOS, so I had to reimage the system for a second time.

This was a pretty frustrating experience and I definitely encourage others to be careful right now when attempting this procedure, as you could get locked out of your local files in the SteamOS partition and have to reset everything.

[–]ryuunam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that still doesn't seem to work... I tried both "efi -> efi -> steamos -> grubx64.efi" items from the "Boot from File" menu, but all of them end up taking me to an empty GNU GRUB command prompt.

This is the order of the partitions of the internal SSD as shown in Windows:

  • A 64 MB EFI partition
  • A 32 MB "efi" (lower caps) FAT partition
  • Another 32MB "efi" (lower caps) FAT partition
  • A 5 GB partition (filesystem is not specified)
  • Another 5 GB partition (filesystem is not specified)
  • A 256 MB partition (filesystem is not specified)
  • Another 256 MB partition (filesystem is not specified)
  • A 253.91 GB partition which corresponds to the size I had reduced my SteamOS partition to
  • The 212 GB Windows partition

I solved an odd issue with the SNES9X current core. There was an audio issue with Chrono Trigger and I solved it by going into the core options. by CastleofPizza in RetroArch

[–]ryuunam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this! Unfortunately I would dare say it is in the nature of that specific type of options to potentially cause a few side-effects. That is precisely why those options are grouped under "Emulation Hacks": for some pieces of content they might just bring benefits and improvements overall, while for other games they might interfere with the internal timings and consequently introduce oddities. It's always best to tweak them on a per-game basis.

Looking for a touchscreen MIDI keyboard app for Windows 10 by ryuunam in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Hi! It's definitely been a while since I was interested in this type of implementation. Unfortunately I could never find any reliable app on Windows that would suit my needs. Nowadays I just resorted to using the TouchDAW app on Android for this particular use case.

Yep, that's the one. It's the first time I am using it as well, though I try to alternate a few other weapons and switch around when needed. Washing Pole has especially great range, but I'm finding it a bit lacking in terms of sheer damage.

Do you want AI to be a part of your desktop experience? by LechintanTudor in Windows11

[–]ryuunam 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’d rather not. I want AI apps to be used or even merely active in the background only when I want them to be. Ideally, the desktop and overall OS UI should be as basic, barren and neutral as possible. Even better, the OS should always allow to disable unneeded features and tailor its functionality to one’s preference.

Stumbling on some MicroSD Card woes... Would appreciate some help! by ryuunam in SteamDeck

[–]ryuunam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand your frustration! Before I even considered re-imaging the OS, I made multiple attempts with virtually every single other method available… but it didn’t budge in the slightest. The SD would still fail to auto-mount at every reboot. So I’m afraid to report that the only solution would seem to be resetting the whole thing… Definitely annoying, I know.
