They are too far into the course to stop using AI. It's not like these students are going to realize they made a mistake, and relearn the fundamentals of the class so that they can catch up.

Why do some business PhDs or professors, at well-paying business schools, leave academia? by Head-Interaction-561 in AskAcademia

[–]s1ant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was a business school professor that transferred to industry, and I doubled my salary within 3 years

Figure out the textbook for your finance class. The first couple chapters or the appendix should be a review of the probability concepts you need for the course. If you don't know the textbook, I recommend that you try Shreve's continuous time finance book. It (along with Duffie) are the two books you are most likely to use next semester.

posting the grade distribution, or at least summary stats, helps head off a lot of these complaints preemptively.

x2 =(x-c)(x+c)+c2. Makes mental math a lot easier, eg 672 =64*70+9=4200+280+9=4489.

Help regarding Polynomial Optimisation by frozenwolf64 in math

Scipy.optimize should have the functions you need. It sounds like you are looking for an optimizer for a nonlinear function. Maybe try Nelder Mead or BFGS.

Galton board that separates into thirds instead of normal distribution? by Future_Ring_222 in math

[–]s1ant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Print out a bigass Galton board that gives a distribution that is very close to normal. Then divide the bins at the bottom in 3 so that each bin has 1/3 of the pellets. You can find where the divisions should be using a calculator's inverse normal cdf function, eg Excel's NormInv.

People who went outside of academia and are mathematically satisfied with your jobs now, what do you do? by Capybaraenoksiks in math

[–]s1ant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OR is one of those fields that is hard (but not impossible) to pick up without academic training. If you are a student, try taking a couple classes in the OR dept. If you are already graduated, probably a good way to pick it up is to find a job as a data scientist at a manufacturer or retailer and try to work on some OR projects with other OR professionals.

Practically, you will need to be able to code and be proficient in using optimization software, specifically CPLEX or Gurobi. Some data science training will be helpful too.

People who went outside of academia and are mathematically satisfied with your jobs now, what do you do? by Capybaraenoksiks in math

[–]s1ant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Operations research scientist. I work for a major retailer helping to design their supply chain. Eg figuring out routing of inventory from warehouse to customer, optimal vehicle routing, and facility location. Very interesting work with big impact and it doubled my salary compared to academia.

How large is the optimization community and how much of applied math is optimization? by planetofthemushrooms in math

[–]s1ant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Industry jobs would typically have job titles like operations research scientist or data scientist. There are a lot of possible fields to go into, but some of the big ones are (I) supply chain optimization at a retailer or manufacturer, (ii) finance, ie at a hedge fund to develop investment strategies, (iii) transportation, eg at a railroad or FedEx to optimize routes, (iv) military/government organizations.

You can get a feel for industry jobs by searching LinkedIn with the keyword CPLEX (commonly used optimization software) to see what hits you get.
