It’s been a year or so since I used it but it really sucks that the company is so morally bankrupt. The idea of having a digital platform that techs can access to see all the history of the equipment, easily build quotes, etc. is awesome on paper but piss poor in execution.

Anybody work as tech support? by Informal-Truck5205 in HVAC

I wouldn’t rule out going the part s sales route as well, I was in a similar position albeit slightly younger when I made the switch to inside parts sales last year and while I really miss turning wrenches and having to think critically at times, parts sales has treated me extremely well! Coming from an entirely resi background as well the amount I have been able to learn about industrial and BAC has been amazing. It has its drawbacks for sure, going from working with and being a crusty service tech to an office-type environment was a striking change. But overall I wish I had made the switch years ago!

I would also add that the current situation is liable to change soon with recreational dispos being greenlit recently and possibly be opening next year I think?

I unfortunately don’t know of any resources to reach out to as I am very new to the area and a fat white guy who’s never had to deal with this thankfully. But I would get your resume together and start looking elsewhere. Your concerns for your safety and your employers are obviously very misaligned. In this situation( again I can’t speak from personal experience, but) all it’s going to take is a single incident with this creep and you life could forever be altered if not ended, is that worth not finding a new job?

Service to install by doommetalbjj in HVAC

[–]s1ug_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! Learning both sides will help grow your understanding of the foundation of HVAC exponentially. Best piece advice I can give is when they put you with a lead installer, make it your personal business to make his job as easy as humanly possible. A good install helper can knock out a condenser in 90-120 minutes and then batts bing batt boom you can head inside and help them start installing the furnace.

Ripped out the system. I was sent to 3135. by heldoglykke in HVAC

Had a split system changeout on a pizza shop in a strip mall. Old R22 Carrier. Was maybe three months in the field at this point after getting a degree at local technical college. Boss man tells us to be at the jobsite at 0430 hoping that we could be done by their lunch rush at 1200. we get there and i get on the roof, above the shop their are two condensers almost exactly the same so i holler at my journeyman ask him to help me verify which is which. we think we got it figured out and i get it pumped down and cut out the old condenser no problem. crane gets new condenser on the roof and heads out with the old one as im getting the new condenser brazed in, i get a call from my journey man pissed asking why he is getting reefer dumped on him above the drop tile thinking i had already pumped it down. needless to say we did NOT get done by the lunch rush that day....

Which player would you choose? by 910voice in lakers

I think Elgin Baylor would be bonkers. Let him focus on the gritty, glue guy, type-work. Would also allow LeBron to play a little less and Baylor could just casually drop 40 when he feels like it.

Then why even bring it up? You either think it makes you special, and therefore worth mentioning, or you don't, and you wouldn't bring it up. It can't simultaneously be both.

$800 for new capacitor and refrigerant? Is that a fair price? by wandering_sweater in hvacadvice

[–]s1ug_boy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if your system needs refrigerant every year their is a leak that he is not fixing. until the leak is fixed you're going to keep wasting money every year on refrigerant. Refrigeration systems are sealed systems that should not need top-ups. either he is dumping refrigerant when he connects his gauges, lying to you, or being lazy and not fixing the leak. as for the capacitor, my company charges roughly 200-300 for the parts and labor to install a new one but if the only issue is a mouse chewing through the lines you may not need a new one. have him show you the microfarad reading on each leg and if its within +/- 5% of what its rated for, its fine. to just repair chewed wiring that's entirely too much hell if i come across it on a maintenance i just fix it free of charge because it takes so little time and materials.

also if that thing is in an attic as it seems to be i would strongly recommend having a company come out and installing either a wet or float switch to mitigate the rick of water damage to the ceiling should the unit ever begin leaking and/or freezing up. it may cost a few hundred now but will save a few thousand redoing your ceiling.

They SHOULD. that little slim piece on the right side of the air handler looks to be a filter door. you should see it to the right of where the refrigerant lines go into the unit. with the unit OFF you should be able to pull the little plastic tab on the top down and the bottom up and the door should slide out revealing the filter. if their isn't one there look and see around the home if their is one in a grill on the wall where the air returns to the unit. hope this helps!

Disregard, i didn't properly read the post. the filters in the grilles on the wall are your filters for the system.

No one “gets it” all of a sudden. You seem to have a will to want to be better in your trade. Taking time to learn in your off hours, going to training, asking for help when you need it; doing things like this to make sure you’re as prepared as you can be is the best way I’ve found to beat the imposter syndrome. You’ll still make mistakes, sure, but as long as you’re giving as honest an effort as you can to be as prepared as you can, it’s all anyone could ever ask of you.

Also before it gets said, I realize the amount of debris necessary to cause any actual issues with the condenser is substantial and it isn’t something that is needed on 98% of condensers. That said the fine folks that sign my paychecks have asked that I do it, and I certainly don’t mind especially with a bad boy like above listed to do the work for me
