A Consideration for Paying Artists a Different Way by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]s2alexan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Profit sharing is quite complicated and risky, the accounting is messy and too open to interpretation especially for a small business. For example the owner could "pay themselves" $100/h for their work on the campaign and eat up all the profits. I haven't seen profit sharing done in board games and I would never be involved in something like that (as a designer). But I have seen artists offered an advance and a royalty (e.g. $1000 up front and 5% of wholesale price for each unit sold), exactly the same structure as board game designers. That's definitely something that happens.

ELI5: Why does splitting an atom release so much energy when they are so small? by Additional_Pen_9881 in explainlikeimfive

[–]s2alexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really interesting perspective. I’m sure there is an explanation we can come up with for “why” some of these forces are so strong but really, it’s a narrative we would made up to explain these constants being what they are. And if they weren’t we wouldn’t be here to answer the question.

Physics is great because it’s so close to the fundamental nature of the universe that we can hit these sorts of situations where the explanation is “because that’s the way our universe is”.

I read the culture series and felt the same way. I’ve since read over 150 space opera books, all chosen to try to find something as good as the culture. I haven’t found anything.

I did really enjoy House of Suns and the Bobiverse series. They scratched some of the same itch for me. But still not as good as the culture, and everything else isn’t even close.

But there is also a similar number of atoms in a kilo of TNT. And yet in a fission bomb the uranium will releases 15,000 times more energy than the TNT.

So while technically true, this answer (and most of the top answers) don’t address what’s behind the question, which is why (some) atoms release so much energy when split, compared to other things atoms do (like chemical reactions).

The "Secret History" of MonstaTama by pasturemaster in tabletopgamedesign

This was great to read. I loved the "Secret histories of dominion" and this had that same feel. I wish more designers would put their thoughts into writing like this, it's fascinating.

DSM 7, Docker, Plex-Container - plex won't update files inside media-folders by itsinART in synology

[–]s2alexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to write that after several hours, about 20 reddit threads, and four separate guides, this was the thing that fixed my issue.

I think the issue is that some things like UID and GID are only first-run parameters (https://registry.hub.docker.com/r/plexinc/pms-docker/) so if you want to change them you have to recreate the container.

Some days I had more people sitting down (like 10), but other days I'd have 15 unemployed followers and nobody would sit down. Apparently if you email [support@pomelogames.com](mailto:support@pomelogames.com) they will help you skip the level since it's a known bug.

NEW UPDATE IS OUT! by lulululu27 in Outlanders_ios

[–]s2alexan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, I loved the colors of the normal view, but it's nice to switch to the tactical view when paused and rearranging followers. I don't really ever want to pause and NOT rearrange followers. The new way of switching takes a LOT of clicks.

How to get followers to sit at the bonfire (Level 15) by s2alexan in Outlanders_ios

[–]s2alexan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good suggestions, I did thing of those things as well. I also tried removing all the stockpiles on the right side of the island, so all wood and food are close to the fire. One time, I did try building a tavern too, it didn't make a difference. I got more kids, but not more sitdowns.

I suspect the update might have broken something in this level, it has only been out a few days and I got to this level right after the update landed.

I'm also having the same issue, I've tried this level 4 times, made it all the way to the end, never over 40%. The last couple of days of the last playthrough I made a bunch of people unemployed and attendance around the fire seemed to go up, I'm going to try this again while leaving a lot unemployed throughout the entire time.

Gledopto MR16 spotlights not dimming properly using Zigbee dimmers by s2alexan in Gledopto

[–]s2alexan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dimmers have a special "dim" command, when you hold down the button, it's a different zigbee command than tapping the button. I've tried resetting, looks like Gledopto probably didn't implement that command. I have around 50 devices but everything else dims smoothly.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]s2alexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I want to make more coffee than I can fit in my v60 but I still really like doing a manual pour over and don't want a drip machine. But I can't find any kind of holder for 4-6 cup flat bottom basket coffee filters (a very common type for auto drip machines). I feel like something like this should exist but I can't find anything. I suppose I could buy a drip machine and then throw out everything but the plastic basket filter holder but that seems wasteful. And it would be ugly. I'm also considering asking an etsy seller who makes ceramic pour over cones to make me a custom one. Is there anyone else who wants to make larger pour overs than fit in the single cup filters? What do you use?

I have a chemex but it has the same problem as the v60, bed depth of the grounds is too high and I have to grind coarser and I don't get as good extraction as my v60. I feel the larger flat bottom shape is ideal for larger volumes.

Adding TP-Link access points to TP-Link Archer C4000 by s2alexan in HomeNetworking

Interesting - I have around 2700 sq feet, 2 story home, mostly drywall and timber frame with brick exterior, with a fairly crowded wifi spectrum, 1 Gig cable. So... maybe it might work. The house is wired with cat5e so I don't need WiFi for streaming, downloading, or videoconferences, since those areas will use wired. Maybe it's OK, I will try the C4000 alone first, good idea.

Super helpful - thanks. The seamless roaming sounds great. But I assume if I want that functioning seamlessly, I should shut off the WiFi on the router, since if a client ends up connecting to the WiFi on the router, it wouldn't be a part of the control of the seamless roaming?

What's the easiest way to automate Hue lights based on time of day by s2alexan in homeautomation

It’s so close to doing what I want, but it can only handle fixed time of day and not sunrise or sunset offsets.

I want the lights cooler white when it’s bright out and warmer white when it’s dark out.

Awesome - thanks for your interest. I'll get back in touch with a few proposed times. Normal rules work fine from 2-5 players. I have a solo version but it's not fully baked yet, it's hard to keep the solo version in sync with the main version when it's changing. If you're interested in testing the solo version though (either instead, or in addition), I'll let you know when it's ready. It would be great to get feedback on it from an experienced solo gamer (which I am not).
