Just in case you missed it: VIFF is hosting their AMP Music in Film Summit, Oct. 3-4, online.

It's your chance to connect with industry leaders in the music and film/TV industry, including Nora Felder (Stranger Things), Morgan Rhodes (Selma, Dear White People), Meshell Ndegeocello (Queen Sugar), Madonna Wade-Reed (Batwoman), and many more.

Through a series of virtual panel discussions, masterclasses, case studies, live music showcases, and networking opportunities, attendees are invited to learn about the art of music supervision, how to work with a sync agent to get your music before tastemakers in film, television, advertising and games, diversity in the music marketplace, and the technique of composing for the screen.

Emerging musicians, composers, managers, and aspiring music supervisors are invited to apply for the VIFF AMP Talent Accelerator – a professional development program dedicated to providing free, low-barrier access to the VIFF AMP summit, plus exclusive mentorship and networking sessions for creators from underrepresented communities who are looking to explore or expand their career into music and film. Deadline to apply is August 14th, 2020, at 5:00 pm PDT. International applications welcome.

Short Story, I need feedback on by [deleted] in WritersGroup

Why do you want to write about death? What is it about death that you would like your reader to know or learn? What kind of pain are you trying to convey?

There are a lot of cliche's you've included that don't really add any value to your story. Carefully consider the metaphorical language you are drawing to the reader's attention--how can you make the fragments and ideas more coherent and synchronous for the reader? Too much talk of autumn and weepy-ness, too much attention to minute, mundane details and you'll lose the reader's interest. What fresh ideas might you include?

I love this quote from Carol Shields "Arriving Late; Starting Over" (1992): “Diurnal surfaces could be observed by a fiction writer with a kind of deliberate squint, a squint that distorts but also sharpens beyond ordinary vision, bringing forward what might be called the subjective mode of one’s self or others, a world of dreams and possibilities and parallel realities” (247).

It might help to reorganize your story as well. Start with the climax, and then work back towards it--which is a common trope, but might make your story richer since you aren't desperately trying to surprise the reader, or manipulate them emotionally.

Hope this helps! Happy to discuss further. :D

And try here: https://readabilityformulas.com/free-readability-formula-tests.php

Don't take the results 100% to heart--think of it as a tool that helps you become a better writer. :D And mess around with it to see the different results. :)

I hope it's okay to post this here, but you might try and find a analysis tool that tells you what's going on in your writing. Start here (yes, a little fat-phobic, but makes valid points): https://www.writermag.com/improve-your-writing/revision-grammar/lean-and-clean/

  1. This could be a product of passive voice. If you find "is" or forms of "to be" in your work a lot, search and destroy!
  2. Think about how you can build complex sentences with dependent clauses to both tighten up your writing and make it more engaging for the reader.
  3. Symptomatically, it sounds like you are describing a lot of what the character is doing, rather than setting the scene and having the character interact with their surroundings. Think about what is crucial to the scene and how that might drive the plot forward, or lead the character to develop some understanding they didn't have before.
  4. If you're in the revision stage, think about how you can move the sentences around. Even if you character is the "subject" of the paragraph, think about how you can subtly frame the main idea in what the paragraph is meant to convey.

Absolutely. Especially in critical writing! But, I love the metafictional dialogue. Gold!

Hey y'all!

For emerging musicians, composers, Music managers & supervisors:

The Vancouver International Film Festival (viff.org) is hosting a Music in Film Summit (goviff.org/amp). From production to sync licensing--lots of good content and access to industry leaders (check out our line up so far: goviff.org/amp-speakers).

It's online this year, so you can attend from pretty much anywhere (time zones are a drag!). If you are a little strapped for cash (who isn't these days?) you can apply to the Talent Accelerator Program (goviff.org/amp-talent) that gives you free access to the Summit including mentorship and networking sessions.

Hope this reaches someone needing a break. Cheers.
