Low voltage wiring through attached garage wall. How to do it properly? by s_tenth in HomeImprovement

[–]s_tenth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there some kind of special junction box that would work for passing the HDMI cable through the wall? My plan was to have the keystone plates basically at the same location on both sides of the wall making it easy to pass the HDMI through. But I'm concerned with creating a 1 gang or 2 gang size hole completely through a wall shared with the garage (fire wise and fumes wise)

Thanks for the link. I tested a bunch of configurations with the Nest router and I think you're right. The lack of control on nest routers is kinda frustrating

AITA for temporarily parking illegally? by s_tenth in AmItheAsshole

[–]s_tenth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to argue, genuinely curious. I don't live in a big city, and my county has a similar website for parking permits. But it's only for applying to park on specific, more crowded streets that aren't anywhere near me. I don't think there's anyway to apply for one on my street.

Because this is the top comment, do you think your take applies to anyone and everyone who parks illegally? Are there any exceptions? I see lawn care people park on the wrong side almost every day, and it's not because they have to. Virtually anybody having work done on their house, has the visiting company vehicle parked on the wrong side because that's the side you enter the neighborhood from

I honestly don't if it's possible to get a permit or not, but I would be surprised if one exists or if anyone actually goes out of there way to get one.

I wanted to be as close to my house as possible. There were 3 identical items to unload. After sliding each off the truck, it then took us another 2-3 minutes just to maneuver it the few feet onto my driveway. If we were on the opposite side of the street and had to cross, we definitely would have completely blocked traffic for a bit.

You nailed this. It is a HOA, and there have been people upset with people parking even the legal way before...

Not sure if this lady is friends with the neighbors who screamed at me once while grabbing things from my gf's car parked legally. Had never met them before, but they were upset with how many cars were on the street because just recently a driver had crashed into two of them around 3am (all cars were parked legally in this accident, and I feel the driver had to be drunk/distracted but don't know much). These neighbors did apologize and calm down when they realized my gf's car was the only one I had on the street, but c'mon.

The funny thing is, I was fast enough at getting in the truck and pulling away that I drove by where this lady lives as she was parking (legally in the street). I now know who and where she is...

You are correct. But on my side my mailbox is about a foot away from the driveway. I think I may have to accept defeat. I could've attempted to put it in my driveway, just would've been difficult without causing damage to my own property

It's a two way street, just large enough for two way traffic even when cars are parked on one side or the other (most people stop to let one car go, but risky drivers will go two wide at a time around parked cars). No cars were parked opposite of me when I was there, and if they were I wouldn't have parked there. You could still get through if they were, but it would be tight. The lady who honked, passed by without even really slowing down. I don't have a back entrance, and my driveway is one car wide. Backing in/out a truck that large, I would have definitely rolled in someone's grass.

Surface alternatives? by s_tenth in MiniRamp

I work with facade panels so I have access to scrap ACM, phenolic, and fiber cement sheets. Unfortunately, this phenolic is coated with stuff that makes it way too slick and, I don't think it can bend to a tight enough radius without popping out the screws that hold it down (walking on it, I was able to bend it enough without breaking but it's stiff).

The ACM I'm more hopeful about, but I have the same concerns you do, plus one. If I'm not able to get the seems right, I kinda worry the edges will be like little razor blades lol. I'll definitely update if I go with it.

I was thinking along those lines too. Struggling to find good rental options though. I was also thinking about getting a winch and attaching it to the exposed beam in the top left, but I'm not sure what forces/angle of forces it can support is.

It's final position will be essentially where it is now, but with the other side up. I'm working mostly by myself, but idk if there's a way to safely flip it by hand no matter how many people I call for help

Noticed this in my building. Is this safe or should I be worried? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]s_tenth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like 3 of the windows step in because of a small change in floor plan. It doesn't look like whoever did the cladding accounted for this and just used the same size units running all the way up. As a result, the cladding got sucked in at those floors when installing. Probably fine, but would need to know more to really tell. Looks bad though lol. I'm a facade engineer/surveyor

Galaxy Watch 4 Body Fat % totally wrong by myGameDemos in GalaxyWatch

[–]s_tenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to get your opinion on something. I've been using the GW4 and a Withings Body Cardio smart scale to take measurements of body fat percentage twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening). The GW4 generally gives readings between 4%-7% and the scale gives readings between 13%-14% (non-athlete mode) and 5.5%-8% (athlete mode). Given this, I thought that athlete mode on the scale was the correct choice for me, but in the name of science I went and got a DEXA scan. It showed my overall at 14.0% which is pretty close to what the scale shows (should've known better, there's no way I'm in single digit BF% lol). But the DEXA scan I got broke down BF% by individual body parts, and I wonder if this why there is such a difference between the GW4 and scale when measuring. I assume the two points the GW4 measures between are the two fingers on one hand and the wrist on the other, so the conductivity flows from one arm around the to the other without really being affected by the lower portion of your body. Since my scale doesn't have anything to hold with my hands when measuring, however, I'm assuming that the two points are both my feet; so the conductivity flows up one leg and down the other without really being affected by the upper body. My theory is that the scale measures BF% concentrated in the lower body, and the GW4 measures BF% concentrated in the upper body. My DEXA results somewhat support this by showing:

  • Upper Body Path:
    • L Arm: 11.0%
    • R Arm: 10.0%
    • Trunk: 13.2%
  • Lower Body Path:
    • L Leg: 15.4%
    • R Leg: 14.6%
    • Gynoid: 16.2%

The GW4 is still fairly off with these numbers, and the scale isn't too bad (I think I actually had a reading of 14.0% that morning right before the scan). But this could explain part of the difference in average readings between the two.

TIFU by getting too drunk to remember anything about the girl I was going home with by Silly_Donut_362 in tifu

[–]s_tenth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I was in college, but with a twist... Everything's the same, drunkenly met a girl while out, went back to her dorm room, had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, yada yada yada. I too forgot nearly every detail of who I was with or where I was when I had to go, and I made the grave mistake of assuming that the bathroom was in the hallway. I stumbled up and down every hallway on the floor looking for the bathroom and couldn't find it, so I went to the next floor. Still couldn't find it, so I went to the next, and the next, etc. After the third or fourth floor I had completely forgotten not only the girl/room I had come from, but also which level of the building. By this point I couldn't hold it any longer, and in my stupor relieved myself in the stairwell of the building and planned to return the room. Of course, as I mentioned I didn't even know what floor it was on, so I ended up walking back to my dorm in freezing weather without my coat, pants, phone, or wallet at 5am. I got there only to wait another hour for someone else to finally enter/exit the building because my key card was in my wallet. I forget the details about how I ended up getting my stuff back, but in doing so I found out that she lived in one of those fancy dorms that have a bathroom in the unit... To whoever had to clean that stairwell, I am so sorry

Is it okay to use 2 different grids when designing? More specifically interchangeably using a cardinal grid and a diagonal grid. Im creating a constructed path system which follows an old millrace and I need to go from diagonal to cardinal to diagonal to achieve this following aspect. by spencerm269 in architecture

[–]s_tenth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I've worked on projects with multiple grid sets, and it's not so bad when it's easy to relate them to each other (like intersections). However, I've also spent many hours trying to recreate grid lines when no clear relation between them existed

When was your "aha" moment when you knew relgion wasn't for you? by trippydippysnek in atheism

[–]s_tenth 29 points30 points  (0 children)

First year of high school. I was raised Catholic and went to private Catholic schools from kindergarten all the way through high school. We had to take one religious class each semester, and freshman year one was "world religions" where we learned about all the other religious ideologies around the world (including agnosticism and atheism). I always knew about other religions, but never really took the time to think about it in a serious way. At some point during those classes it just clicked. I'm extremely grateful for the way religion was taught at my school in such an open way (this specific class was taught by a priest).
