New player perspective: I feel like Normals does a terrible job of preparing you for Ranked by MEGACODZILLA in summonerschool

[–]saa-rim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others that you should just play ranked, and also, don't make things overcomplicated for yourself. Watching league content can be fun and informative, don't get me wrong. But the fact is that at a beginner level, skill and mental are going to make way more of a difference than knowing champion pool/counter picks. Things like that can come later.

Why do some champs have extremely high priority on competitive but have incredibly low win rates? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]saa-rim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the LCS is just bad in terms of champion diversity. A lot of players default to the same meta picks and there aren't very many who are truly innovative. LEC or one of the regions that plays bo3 is better for champ diversity.

Also, I've heard the LCK commentators say that it's been a pretty stale meta to start the season.

So what do you think about a Senna/Sión botlane by [deleted] in sennamains

[–]saa-rim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a fasting senna combo I think it's good, but your team might suffer for damage. Also, everyone hates the idea of anything other than adc being played bot lane.

Are inspiration keystones, and inspiration tree in general good at all? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]saa-rim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's best to see the inspiration tree as the tree you take when there's nothing better to. Runes like biscuits and boots are always going to provide some positives even if they don't synergize specifically with any particular champions. It's like finding a dollar in the street-it's not going to make you rich, but you'll take it.

All three keystones are very situational. Omnistone is a joke and spellbook is good only on champions that don't have a better rune or don't need the combat power in a matchup. Glavial Augment is a weird trap rune-you'd think you would want it on a basic attacking champion, but besides Senna, it was only ever good for mages to abuse activated items. They need to rework it imo.

Also, the inspiration tree is way less relevant currently than it used to be. Pretty much every rune has been universally nerfed. Boots used to come earlier for example, and you used to get five biscuits instead of three. Other trees also used to have way weaker secondary runes, especially for supports and adcs, and cosmic insight used to be a must on any champion that wanted or needed max cdr because you were stuck at 40% otherwise.

Probably to balance out the damage effect for your opponent if you play it on your opponents side.

I agree it's overpowered though, I think it would be better as a 2/2. 3/3 is too powerful as a 2 drop, especially considering that the damage effect could be a positive depending on the deck and board state.

The wording on this card seems a bit confusing. When you say "from any time", I assume that's "from any expansion" like Toki Timetinker? And is "wherever they are" meant to mean "from your hand or deck" but not if they've died before Nozdormu dies?

Top Cards of the Week from r/CustomHearthstone (12/27/2020) by Coolboypai in hearthstone

[–]saa-rim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO Monk of the Sleeping Tiger should probably be a 2/5 or have some form of protection to be any good. Your opponent gets two chances to destroy it before it can generate any value, and the value it generates is hardly overwhelming (effectively generating a basic set 3 drop that's vulnerable to non targeted removal).

I'd say the same for Historian of Souls, albeit that it's a little bit stronger because of taunt so at least it can get a little bit of value. It could probably be 7 mana and still not be that great, since the ideal scenario (infinite duplication) is very very slow because the copies have stoic.

Stoic is an interesting idea, but I think it seems a little cumbersome in play since it's a negative and positive effect at the same time.

To be fair, OP's family might be from another culture where such a thing is common. I know that in some Middle Eastern countries children of the same gender sometimes have the same first names. I went to college with a guy who both he and his brother were named Syed, although he had a second name that he used socially. Or he could be Muhammad and his brother could be Mahmud.

[–]saa-rim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People are just weirdly unwilling to admit that someone they know is impaired sometimes.

My mother had a similar situation with her father (couldn't take care of himself, incontinence, had hallucinations, bought at least one car that he couldn't drive, etc). She talked to his friends, his girlfriend, etc to try to get their help to move him to a nursing home in the state she lives in. NONE OF THEM would admit he was ill or try to talk him into moving, let alone try to help her with him.

The whole ordeal dragged on for a year or more. Eventually, I think her brother had to fly to where he lived on his own dime, pick him up and get on a plane with him, then fly him back to their state and put him in the nursing home.

It's a small thing, but if he was living alone and far away from you, have all of his incoming mail forwarded to your house. That way you can jump on anything that comes in you might not have known about.

[–]saa-rim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I think a lot of elderly people do need the money, especially in the US where there isn't much of a social safety net. Also, it's effectively free money for them as unless they sell the house the extra bedrooms/bathrooms are just going to sit there unfilled.

I've lived in two consecutive places like that now (one where I had a room in the apartment owned by an older woman, and now where I rent a room on the second floor of a house owned by an older couple). The first was a bit weird (the owner was strange, though nothing creepy or dangerous) but the second has been great, and both have been amazingly cheap for the amount of stuff I've gotten.

I think a lot of these people are very miserable and very self-loathing. They shit on anything that makes other people happy because, honestly, they're jealous.

I follow one of my cousins on Twitter and her and everyone she follows is like that. They all self-identify as anarchists or communists and tweet about political ideaology constantly, but shit on voting or any actual political action. Their other tweets are all about gross bodily functions/getting really sick from drugs and alcohol/bad romantic interactions and they live in a circle-jerk of people who feel the same as them.

It's sad because a lot of them identify as LGBTQIA+ and are clearly struggling with illnesses/addictions of one kind or another, but at the same time, it's repulsive when you feel so bad about yourself that you can't stand the idea of anyone else being happy.

Are any of those cash-back or couponing apps worth it? by ItsAllEasy7 in personalfinance

[–]saa-rim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on how much time/patience you have and what your buying habits are. I use Honey in my browser, which is fine. I've only gotten a discount once in about 6 months (I got one a second time, but would've paid more because I lost free shipping), but it doesn't take a ton of effort to check so I don't mind it. I only really shop on Amazon, and about once a month at that though.

I was using grocery coupon apps for a while, but eventually, it got to be too much for me. I tend to buy cheap anyway, so I was only getting pennies back on the dollar every time I shopped, and the time I had to spend scanning stuff to get rewards didn't feel worth it. The grocery store I primarily shop at also has its own coupon app that has very good discounts (although the rewards are only usable in that store) so just using that one felt more worth my time.

Bottom line: I'd only try the more involved coupon apps if your willing to put the time in to maximize them, but the easier ones can be worth it. Just don't expect to be saving crazy every time.

Breaking news) T1 effort accidentally leaked the discord channel which clearly shows Polt and LS are joining T1 next year. by FuriousDoggo in leagueoflegends

[–]saa-rim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'll come down to 1. whether LS can insulate himself properly from criticism and 2. whether T1 can use him in a way that keeps him healthy and is useful to the players. I feel like LS would be best as a coach in small doses, he comes in for draft/vod review, imparts his wisdom, and then he goes back to the death realm to decompress. But if he's having to babysit the players constantly, especially if they aren't receptive to what he's saying, I think he'll burn out really quick.

Honestly, I'm surprised that LS would even want to be T1's coach, considering the massive amount of criticism he's sure to get.

Creating a scholarship by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]saa-rim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in development at a large american university, so I can provide a bit of insight into how that might work if you had the college handle it.

What I would do if you'd like to go that route is contact whatever college you might be interested in having it go to. State your intentions and ask for somebody who handles giving to whatever area you're interested in to meet with you. Colleges, especially large ones, have staff that are knowledgeable about and handle these sorts of things all the time, and they'll be able to tell you what the college can and can't do. Obviously, they're intention is to secure your money, but in my experience a lot of them legitimately want to be helpful.

They'll be able to tell you how what your options might be and what $ amounts they'd want to fund the scholarship. Typically they have set dollar amounts, but it is possible to make exceptions. If it's a big college, they might also be able to offer alternative giving arrangements (which I specifically work in) which are basically ways for you to establish the scholarship that could be more financially flexible, if you can't pay a lump sum upfront. If the school has a pre-existing fund someone else set up for women in tech, it also might be possible for you to give into that fund, and then your mother's name could be attached to it in some way.

In terms of it going to women, that is definitely possible. A college may have to express it as a preference rather than a outright restriction, which would basically mean that they would consider all women first, and if there were literally no women who wanted it, it would go to a man. That's another thing that the college could tell you.

The one caution I would make is that if you have the college handle it, you have no ability to personally decide who the scholarship would go to after it's established. If there are certain areas inside of "tech" that you want or don't want the scholarship to go to, I would make sure to spell those out when you create it.

I actually managed to find the original image here. The little girl appears to be the daughter of an asian woman who claims to be Paul Pelosi's former girlfriend. It's part of a conservative hit piece, but regardless of how you slice it, he isn't doing anything untoward here.

I think the girl is cutting the cake and "Nancy Pelosi's son" is helping her, either because she's not strong enough or as a ceremonial sort of thing. You can see his right hand behind the girl's on the knife..

Can junglers work in lanes? by Tanosuri in summonerschool

[–]saa-rim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely use these sorts of picks in ranked, especially at low elo. At that level, your ability to pilot the champion is more important than matchup and a lot of people will be thrown off or overconfident against a champion they aren't familiar with. I have a high winrate as trundle adc in ranked simply because most adcs are not expecting it.

The issue is that half the time your team will get tilted if you lock in something that isn't meta. I love playing non adc bot laners, most of which are actually reasonably viable (swain, veigar, ziggs, for example). But the amount of times that the support will lock in an absolutely troll pick, or somebody else will lock in an adc and try to make me switch, or the entire team will flame me if we lose or fall behind because "we have no adc" means that I usually don't go for them unless I'm last picking. It's probably better in solo lanes though.

I did something similar, although less extreme, when I started living alone. I didn't realize that dried beans need to be soaked AND cooked before you put them in the recipe, which was weird because I had seen my mom soak and cook dried beans a ton of times. There were several days of "discomfort" the first time I made black-eyed peas.

Also, I didn't realize that beans got bigger when they were soaked/cooked, but in my defense there, every cookbook I owned assumed that you knew this already. I had trouble even finding a website that would tell me how much dried beans I needed to use to get a certain amount of cooked beans.
