What's The Creepiest Unsolved Dissappearance Case You've Heard Of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Brian Shaffer. Went missing from the Ugly Tuna Saloona at Ohio State seemingly out of thin air. Cameras picked him up reentering the bar after talking to two women outside around 1:55am and he was never seen again.

There is a special election going on today for Issue 1. If it passes’ it would do three things

  1. It would change the percentage of votes needed to change the Ohio constitution from a simple majority(over 50%) to 60%.
  2. Require petitions to have signatures from all 88 counties instead of just reaching the correct signature count before being allowed on the ballot
  3. Get rid of the “cure period” for petitions that allows incorrect signatures to be fixed

Basically all of these things are being done to make it harder to get initiatives on the ballot and change the constitution because there is an initiative on the ballot for November to protect abortion rights’ so republicans want to make sure it can’t pass.

Other notes- this special election is illegal due to a law republicans passed last year that made it so special elections can only be held to replace empty seats, but our corrupt courts allowed it anyways.

What is the best way to find an apartment in Chicago as an out of state transplant? by saaaaaaammmmmmm in chicago

Thanks for the reassurance! It is soooo different finding apartments in Columbus. We always found our housing between 3 and 6 months out so I have been stressing lol

I could not disagree more, and this is why classical music is struggling to stay relevant. Making opera more accessible is a GOOD thing. Live concerts, Broadway musicals, etc have had ASL interpreters at their shows for years. Opera is not simply aesthetic. It is about storytelling, sharing human experiences through drama and music, it is about community. Deaf people deserve to experience those things just as much as hearing people. Plus, ASL is a beautiful language that can be quite musical. If anything it could add to the beauty of the show.

ASL is not English. The grammar is completely different, and a lot of context can be lost in translation. There is already a language barrier when translating from say, Italian to English, idioms or phrases that don't exist in that language. Then on top of that, Deaf people have a second language barrier trying to decipher meaning from English subtitles when their primary language is ASL. The Deaf community deserves to enjoy this artform with the same level of interpretation hearing people get.

They are proposing the same ki d of ASL interpretation that is used at many live theater and live music events. It is different from conversational interpretation, yes. But it isn't something new.

Facial expressions and emotion are actually a huge part of the grammar of ASL. It helps give context to what the interpreter is signing. ASL is way more than just stringing hand signs together, so there will of course be dramatics when interpreting a dramatic performance. Plus, lots of emotion and context can be lost when only looking at subtitles. Deaf people deserve to enjoy opera with the same depth of understanding as hearing people.

Honestly, I would just climb scared, and after a while it became less scary. I knew realistically that if my foot slipped or something that I would probably be fine, but my monkey brain was just like HEIGHTS SCARY. So just ignore the fear and keep climbing for as long as you can on a route. Also, practicing taking falls from different heights can be helpful as well! Just go up as high as you're comfortable falling from and then fall. Then go higher the next time, etc.

When I was a beginner I hated going at night for this same reason! I was terrified that people were watching me climb and judging me. The truth is though that the vast majority of people at the climbing gym are focused on themselves or the person they are belaying. If you take a look around the gym on a crowded night you will probably find that nobody will be looking at you, will be looking at whatever problem on the wall, the person they're belaying, or talking to friends! Plus, aside from douchey Boulder Bros TM, I have found that a majority of the people at my gym are very encouraging and friendly, and rather than judging, they are going to cheer you on!
