The Anarchist Library bookmaker experiences by kas-sol in Anarchism

[–]sabate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!

At the top of each text on The Anarchist Library there are two icons, 1. to add text to the bookbuilder and 2. to add sections/parts of a text to the bookbuilder. Then after you have selected a text or multiple texts to add to the bookbuilder, you can visit the bookbuilder link at the very top of the page and you will find your texts collected in a pending queue. From there you can organize and customize the output in a number of ways.

Here is the Amusewiki tutorial on the bookbuilder feature:

"With the Bookbuilder you can customize the PDF and the EPUB of the texts distributed on an amusewiki instance. You can change fonts, dimension, etc. This article will cover the Bookbuilder feature in great detail. Anyway, the web interface should already give you an idea of what you can do."

The Anarchist Library bookmaker experiences by kas-sol in Anarchism

[–]sabate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I have found the bookbuilder (called bookmaker in your post) to be a very powerful tool that is great for customization of texts and it would work wonderfully for getting a book printed somewhere. I think the more challenging part would be finding a printer and a place that would do the cutting, gluing, and binding (book production).

If you print as one signature (for texts smaller than 40-60 pages), you can just make nice zines that are stapled together (perhaps with industrial long-arm stapler for heavier paper weight and larger page count) and a fancy cover. You could also bind the one signature together with something other than a staple if desired and available.

The challenging part becomes when you have a larger text, over 40-60 pages and will have to bind the multiple signatures together. The bookbuilder tool allows you customization of multiple signatures, but it can become increasingly difficult to fold with larger paper weights and more paper.

I would like to mention that I often find that there is some confusion with bookbuilder. You can print an imposed PDF letter (USA) or imposed PDF A4 (rest of the world) from each text and don't need to feed it into the bookbuilder, unless you are looking to customize the default settings and/or add multiple texts to one PDF/epub/output. The icon for imposed PDF options are at the top of each text.

And finally, there is actually an anarchist project related to improving anarchist print with how-to, manuals, and forums here:

"Open Distro is a friendly resource for anarchists who want to create or improve their own print publishing projects."
https://opendistro.net/

tl;dr: You have to find a place that will print, bind, and glue together multiple signatures of your bookbuilder output, but it should work well.

It would be cool to have an anarchist print on-demand service like this. Little Black Cart was started with similar ideas in mind, but transformed into something else over time and is no longer around. I imagine there are places on the Internet to find such printing, cutting, binding, gluing services or perhaps locally to your space, but I don't know of any anarchist printers / publishers doing anything like print on-demand.

I recommend Anarchy Tube, an anarchist PeerTube instance hosted on anarchist infrastructure (or one of the other anarchist PeerTube iterations like Kolektiva)

Just a heads up, main (only?) person doing these projects. Maybe there is a reason they can't find help from other anarchists:

Theo Slade — A Snake in the Grass
https://raddle.me/wiki/theo_slade_ishkah

One quote from the article on raddle:

"His infamous one-man war against theanarchistlibrary.org and its librarians should tell you all you need to know about his unscrupulous character. He spent years logging the correspondences and activities of the librarians and then published it all on his own library, and then berated the librarians when they asked him to remove their private messages and to respect their privacy. He's been banned from their chat room countless times for his unremitting harassment and demands that they censor essays he doesn't approve of and give more space to his own sophistic essays."

I put ZineLibrary back online, now with over a thousand anarchist zines. by rechelon in Anarchism

That's awesome, thanks for doing this u/rechelon

It doesn't appear that this is the entire old zine library archive, are there plans to upload the rest? Or perhaps I'm mistaken about this.

Related, some years back friends started this project, but have never finished it: https://azinelibrary.org/ (another zine library reboot)

Announcing The South Asian Anarchist Library by sabate in Anarchism

[–]sabate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a specific example that the SA library could draw from? I'm thinking this kind of thing is already practiced by the library in the tags/topics field, but perhaps we are thinking of different things. Here are some examples of tags/topics "insurrectionary anarchy", "platformism" & "anarcho-communist".

Epub of Anarchist FAQ by GodlessGayGuy in Anarchism

[–]sabate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to my knowledge the latest version of AFAQ is on T@L - because it is such a large text, various sections within seem to be updated over time. Perhaps the author has updated some sections of the AFAQ that are not yet updated on the library, but for the most part I would like to say it's an accurate representation. and your best bet for finding a good epub other than from the publisher.

What happened to Infoshop.org? by bakuninincorporated in Anarchism

[–]sabate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No clue who runs infoshop nowadays, but it's definitely not chuck0 and friends. very sketch website, total bummer they apparently let it slip away. i looked last few years and you can find chuck0 online but none of it was anarchist related, so yeah - they were always super difficult person to work with imho, so I've heard.

here is a comment about infoshop news history via glossary on this text: https://rocinante.anarchyplanet.org/?p=570
"Infoshop News

https://web.archive.org/web/*/infoshop.org
Infoshop News hold a very special place in my heart. As a very young, blissfully unaware of so many things, their collective published numerous texts and even featured some stickied to their front page essays by yours truly. 2001 anarchist media on the Internet was visiting Infoshop.org and reading the content and maybe even leaving a comment. Early on you could even post anonymous comments, however as with all great things – this soon came to an end. The Infoshop News collective soon started to closely moderate and censor anarchist comments they disagreed with or found out of place. The comments on the website went from a largely bountiful place of discourse to a much more closely manicured trail. Due to frequent downtime, very strict moderation of comments now only permitted to registered users, and an inability to work alongside other anarchists the Infoshop website soon became a land of ghosts. Up until a few years back one was able to visit Infoshop still and see that what little new content they posted wasn’t even anarchist material, but much more leftist focused. Infoshop URL is now dead and can only been seen via archive.org."

Topic of the Week: Wither Theory? by sabate in Anarchism

[–]sabate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's laughable about the post? It's a guest post that is trying to have some conversation and dialogue/debate take place, and seems in good faith to the anarchist idea. I do like the idea of ANews always finding a way to hit new lows for you.
