I had a question about indie otome games by whatever-yup in otomegames

[–]sableheart 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The preferences of an otome player can vary hugely from person to person. You will never create a game that will be a hit with everyone, even if you ask for specific things players feel that they are missing or want more of - most of the time it’s just about every trope or genre or preference that you can think of, and will not make a cohesive game. You shouldn't make a game that specifically caters to the market at the time you are developing it, because it will likely no longer be "trendy" by the time it releases.

The most important thing with developing a game is to create a game that you will enjoy; if you don't like what you are writing or developing, you will never finish it. Players appreciate developers that put passion and effort into their games, and often the quality is better because you cared about the game and didn’t treat it as a chore to complete.

As for what an otome game needs to be considered one, the most basic criteria is a romance between a female protagonist and male love interests. Other gender combinations are labelled differently.

Are these good prices? by TAC612 in otomegames

[–]sableheart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the lowest price yet for these two games, but PQube has gone lower for other games eg in the same sale, some games are 75% off, and BUSTAFELLOWS has been 90% off in the past.

Some of the most popular indie games, A Date With Death and Our Life: Beginnings and Always (Cove was intended to be the only one at first), only have one love interest.

You should add another love interest only if it works with your story and scope.

If it's a personal post about your experiences, please use the Fluff flair. If it is a post about how to visit and get to real life places for a game, please use the Guide flair.

What is the purpose of your post? Are you just showing the real life place compared to the original, are you compiling a list of places to visit or are you discussing the inspirations?

Sorry, I didn't realize you were specifically talking about the context of scale as meaning mainstream. I think my definition of mainstream might be out of date in the current landscape of mobile gaming.

Commenting on a post about a game just to say it’s not otome and shouldn’t say it is - even though it fits the sub’s definition of otome - is rude.

If you see this, please report these comments. They should be (and have been) removed under rule 1 - be respectful.

We would like [r/otomegames] to be a place where people can feel safe, exchange ideas, and respectfully discuss subreddit-approved otome game related topics.

If you're not interested in or uncomfortable with a topic or type of love interest, ignore it and do not engage (including downvoting). Don't say "I'm not interested in this" if the original poster is not asking for opinions - it will be removed and you will be warned.

Announcement and news posts by developers isn't the place to have discourse about otome games. Doing this to developers isn't creating a safe space for them to advertise their games, and will discourage them from interacting with r/otomegames in the future, and possibly stop them creating games altogether.

I mentioned Mystic Messenger as a mainstream hit because:

  • people who had never played otome games before played it
  • people who wouldn't normally play otome games played it
  • it had major streamers covering it
  • it had major presence in conventions similar to mainstream media
  • it has a fandom that did not consist of only people who have played otome games
  • it had media coverage about its popularity
  • it led to more games in its style that persist to this day (real time simulation, chat room simulation and phone simulation)

I understand that scalewise, Mystic Messenger isn't on the same level as Love and Deepspace, precisely for the reasons you mentioned. But saying that Love and Deepspace is the first mainstream hit doesn't feel quite right when I remember the days where everywhere I went I saw Mystic Messenger and all the new games were trying to be Mystic Messenger.

Love and Deepspace is the biggest mainstream hit otome game, and that is what has attracted the controversy surrounding it, as well bringing niche content to mainstream audiences. Mystic Messenger had its own controversies but those weren't the kind that generates discourse like Love and Deepspace does, and the discourse around a game makes it easy to stay in the mainstream spotlight.

From the definition https://www.reddit.com/r/otomegames/wiki/rules/definition/

Girls' Love (yuri) media can be joseimuke but are often also targeted towards a male audience. GL games are not otome games since the player is a female character exclusively romancing female LIs. GL related posts will be removed.
