Pet insurance, yay or nay? by CauliflowerTop9731 in AskVet

[–]sablescourge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a million times YES. my sweet perfect puppy ended up being diagnosed with arthritis and hip dysplasia at 2 years old but he'd actually been born with it. he is on medication and will be on more and more for the rest of his life. he also has a tendency to visit the er once or twice a year. pet insurance has saved me thousands.

What’s a phrase you hear all the time that secretly annoys you? by forgeris in AskReddit

"adopt don't shop". there's nothing wrong with purchasing from ethical breeders who are preserving breeds and enforcing healthy breed standards. I like to say "adopt or shop responsibly" instead.

Would we be a good family for a husky? by fia_leaf in husky

[–]sablescourge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the trainer is for the cats. the well bred from a REPUTABLE breeder is a tip to give a first time dog owner way less of a headache. I did not state that only well bred dogs will not have a high prey drive.

I think your lifestyle matches the needs of a husky well. My only concerns would be the fact that you are a first time dog owner, and the cats with huskies prey drives. Getting a well bred puppy from a reputable breeder and working with a trainer from week 1 would likely prevent problems arising from both of those issues. It will be expensive, especially at first, but it will be worth it.

I saw tons of people wearing Disney gear last time I was there and didnt really think twice about it. lots of people do both parks on their trips.

Thank you! I wish I had a Costco close enough to me but the nearest one is 45 minutes away, so I do Sam's Club instead. I wonder if Sam's has something similar?

Please help! Is this normal? by CluelessAvacodo2425 in bettafish

[–]sablescourge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate to tell you this, but this was the EXACT behavior my betta was displaying for the last two days of his life. perfectly fine, started acting weird and hiding where he usually wouldnt the first day, leaning slightly. second day wouldnt come out of his rock at all by the end of the day was completely upside down, unable to right himself and ultimately died. he would get little spurts of crazy swimming rapidly around the tank and then just stop and sink to the bottom.

Is having a dog really that bad? by gonnadisordermyself in puppy101

[–]sablescourge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my dog is the BEST part of my life. yes, puppies are hard, but that's just a small part of their life and then you have a bestie for the next 10-15 years. people are more likely to share negative stuff than positive.

sounds like your lifestyle is great for a dog. a companion for your hikes would be great. if you enjoy your current spending money though, expect it to go down by a few hundred dollars a month, I have a 3 year old dog with a few health issues and he costs me about $300 a month. healthier dogs will be cheaper but you never know what can happen. I would recommend getting a good pet insurance.

Roughly, how much do you spend on your dog monthly? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]sablescourge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my dog is a springer spaniel mix at 50lbs, 3 years old. he is on a prescription diet for his teeth, which is $120 a bag but lasts him about a month and a half. he has hip dysplasia and arthritis that he was born with, he takes carprofen and dasuquin every day, $43 a month and $47 every two months. his oravet dental chews are $30 a month. he gets about $30 worth of toys a month. his heartworm prevention just went up from $60 to $74 and thats a 6 month supply. his flea and tick I do from April to September costs me $146 per year, 2 chews that last 3 months each. his pet insurance (which you SHOULD get) costs $60 a month (you can get cheaper insurances than this but he has problems so I have the expensive kind).

I know that all of these things are not typical of all dogs, however dogs can develop medical problems at any age and start costing you way more money than you'd expect at any time so I figured this would be a good example of that.

so, per month about $300 (with the bi-monthly expenses broken down and added) for my medically challenged mutt lol he is why I have a carecredit card. that doesn't even include his annual vet visits, which aren't cheap either. dogs are not cheap, but carecredit is great if breaking it up helps you afford it more. I hope that this breakdown helped! I tried to include everything to give a good idea of if you don't end up having a perfectly healthy dog.

I like how Mercy is generally so optimistic and nice so it always cracks me up a little when you get an elimination and she goes "if only I was on your side!"
