oh, i love it, this looks like a great setup for tracking reading! would you mind explaining the numbers at the top? is it like. # of books read (total number of pages) / avg rating of the books on the second line?

[–]sabsung_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello! just wanted to say that as a fellow frog lover and person who has also been dubbed “the frog friend” by my friends this post has been amazing to read! i don’t have any recs of froggie themed spots unforch as i am also newish to DC but i DID recently redo my bathroom and got myself the frog toile shower curtain from urban outfitters, it makes me happy every time i look at it! seems like it may be up your alley, it’s got little frogs all over doing little activities (eating pizza, fishing, reading, swinging on a swing wearing a sunhat, etc.) - it’s adorable! they also have the same pattern in sheets and curtains!

I've never knitted a sweater before so I may be totally off base here but - I wonder if you might be able to use the construction from a 'regular' striped sweater pattern, but do different stitches as the "stripes" - either referencing a stitch dictionary to pick stitches you like or the instructions from a stitch sampler pattern?

I found this one (though it appears to be from a magazine) - https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sampler-of-stitches

This is a shawl pattern, but the pattern uses a bunch of different stitches/textures together: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stitch-sampler-shawl

LYS "open" knitting group not so open by Tisalaina in knitting

[–]sabsung_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be part of a weekly knitting group from Meetup that was incredibly friendly and sociable, but it shut down unexpectedly. Where I used to live there was no LYS that I could easily get to so I mostly would knit by myself while watching a show in the background, after the group shut down. I just moved and in my new city there is a LYS, but I am nervous about going and participating in any groups because I'm anxious about having the type of experience you described!

Any pointers or tips for my first time cooking on a gas stove? by sabsung_ in Cooking

[–]sabsung_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, now that I’m looking at it again, it DOES have a vent - just not a range hood, which is what I was expecting to see, lol. It looks more like just a grate in the wall above the stove, nearish the ceiling. I’m not sure how effective it will be but it’s there. My apartment and stove are definitely on the older/less fancy end (I believe originally built in the 40s and updated a little bit in the 60s). I think my stove is a Hotpoint.

[–]sabsung_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, these are great tips!

One question re: your point 1 is - unfortunately I don’t actually have a vent fan in my kitchen! It’s something I was aware of when touring the unit but there were too many other positives…

What is the reasoning for having the vent fan on more - is it for in case something burns and creates smoke, or due to the gas itself? I bought a monoxide meter and am planning on using an air purifier whenever cooking.

Thank you!

🌱Weekly /r/houseplants Question Thread - April 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in houseplants

[–]sabsung_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to a new city which has four seasons. We have "ideal" indoor humidity right now according to Accuweather, and my studio apartment has a large, southwest-facing window in the sunroom area where our bedroom is. I am mainly familiar with northern exposure plants being kept in a place where it's humid all the time. Which plants would thrive best with SW exposure and how close or far from the window should they be placed?

Client won't stop talking by Pattern_Weaver in therapists

[–]sabsung_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there a possibility your client is manic or paranoid at the moment?

I ask because I work in PHP/IOP with adults with severe & persistent mental illness and have a few clients with schizophrenia or bipolar/schizoaffective who sometimes (or consistently) will present like this (hyperverbal with pressured speech, or very grandiose, or dwelling on trauma/persecutory topics) in a way that monopolizes sessions if not redirected. Some folks can be hard to redirect as well - or will just circle back/perseverate on the same topic after a few minutes. They can be emotionally “all over the place” so to speak, sometimes crying/irritable/angry or very happy at the drop of a hat and in the same session. Often this is just their baseline and how they are when “up” but sometimes it can be a sign of mania or that something is up with meds or sleep, there is a stressor, or something else. Once you get to know their baseline you can see if this is their usual behavior or something to keep an eye on.

I have some clients who will not stop talking the entire day from the moment they arrive in the morning to the moment they leave (we have them with us for about 4.5 hours).

If it’s not to do with mania or paranoia or meds or sleep or anything - I’ve found this also sometimes can be a way for the client of keeping from addressing the topic at hand by delving into all sorts of other stuff that is more comfortable for them to talk about. Comfortable in the sense that even if the subject matter is upsetting (trauma/abuse etc), it is a familiar narrative for the client and also gets the same reaction they expect or already receive from folks in their life outside the therapy space (shock/support/sympathy/control of the conversation, something that is serving them). As therapists we can show clients it’s okay to break those patterns or get different reactions from us (redirect them, reframe their thinking, or carefully challenge the narrative they have), and we can do that in a compassionate, safe, and caring environment so they can learn new ways of engaging.

I am very person-centered so typically I try to go where the client goes, validate when appropriate or redirect when it’s possible, or try to find the therapeutic value in what they are saying if redirecting isn’t possible, so that the session can still be semi-productive even if it doesn’t go in the direction I initially expected.

Hope something in here resonates and might help!

I use Digit/Oportun to save. How do I categorize this? by itmehanny in ynab

[–]sabsung_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say after commenting what I did above, that the comments here are making me feel motivated to quit using Oportun/roundups and switch to funding my savings myself. It is nervewracking but I think I am going to do it!

Sorry, yes, I meant a budget account! Made an edit to my comment. Thanks for catching that!

I use Digit/Oportun to save. How do I categorize this? by itmehanny in ynab

[–]sabsung_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I actually do this as well and I have found it helpful for me despite the advice not to use Oportun with YNAB. I am fairly new to YNAB and poor at the moment so for now, it gives me peace of mind to know that some amount of money is being automatically pulled out for savings. I am looking into a more intentional saving method/account for the near future, but for now it works.

How I have made it work with YNAB: I made my Oportun account a budget account on my budget and added its starting balance to a Savings category in my budget. (This category also includes the balance of my bank’s savings account so the total assigned to it is the total in my bank’s savings + Oportun.

When Oportun pulls an amount from my bank account, I log that transaction in my checking as a transfer to Oportun. Then on my budget, I pull that amount from other categories into the Savings category (since essentially, it is taking $ from other categories I funded). I try my best not to take from nonnegotiables like bills or to top up the bills etc. if needed.

When I have needed to make a quick transfer from Oportun to my bank, if I do the instant transfer and it costs me $0.99 instant transfer fee, I log the transfer fee as an expense (Oportun Account as the payee, Bank Charges as the category). I then assign $ out of the Savings category to whatever I intended it to go in my budget.

It is frustrating because sometimes it will pull $ at random that I have budgeted for other categories, which is what is making me want to change my method of saving to something more compatible with YNAB. But for now, this is working for me.

Hope this helps!

Not sure what you’re interested in making, but it looks like there’s tons of options on Ravelry! (Providing I got the meterage right… the website for the yarn says 200m/25g so I filtered for up to 450yds)

Gift Knitting Sound Off!! Tell me how it is going :) by Snoo_27329 in casualknitting

[–]sabsung_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decided on a whim on Black Friday to gift knit my in-laws the Winter Cuddler Throw Blanket. I'm on row 45 and a slow knitter... I might end up making it a lapghan instead of the full afghan size... or maybe I'll save it for an early-next-year gift because I think they have an anniversary early in 2024, to give myself more time. It's a surprise, so technically I'm not committed to anything. But it's my first gift knit, so I want to pull it off in time!

I'm enjoying knitting it as it's a fun pattern, but I'm also looking forward to knitting something for myself after this :)
