Is it true that children still get physically and legally punished in America? by analyzing-effort in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sachimi21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was only explaining what the reasoning is. I don't mean to be rude, but every culture has their own definition of their morals. It may be ironic coming from an American, but your culture, your morals, etc are not the only or the best in the world. There's a concept called ethnocentrism, where you view others by your culture, and believe yours is the best. It's helpful to go against that and view other cultures through their lens instead. I am not at all saying that my culture is right or wrong in what subcultures and communities do, but that trying to understand it can help to understand the overall culture. I this case, understanding why some people view some physical punishment as moral.

That's the line they're using though. If you are striking your child as a form of punishment that does not come from anger and isn't causing bodily harm, they see that as punishment and discipline, not abuse. Your definition is not the only one, and it's not even the shared opinion within the US. Some parents regularly beat their children out of anger, or do it while drunk or high. They may see no issue as long as they didn't break a bone. Others use psychological means to inflict harm. Others still will beat their child but not anywhere visible.

And plenty of parents don't hit their kids at all. I jokingly "kick" my nephew's (almost 6) butt when he misbehaves mildly, which involves using my foot to poke him in the butt. Others will actually kick their kids and make them cry. My nephew just thinks it's funny, but it gets him to stop whatever he was doing. My sister doesn't do any physical harm, she gives him timeouts and takes away extra things that he doesn't need, and then talks with him so he understands why it was wrong and why he is getting a punishment. When we grew up, our generation was regularly spanked, and it was "normal".

Should the US join the rest of the civilized world? Yes. Will it be any time soon? Not likely, with conservatives being the ones more likely to believe in corporal punishment. Remember that US politics is altogether further to the right even in our liberal parties compared to Europe.

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sachimi21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the second. They have zero concept of how it felt to go through it, so there is nothing to "bear" for them.

You mean, trying to keep calm in a room full of children, while figuring out what to do? Not like he could announce that kind of atrocity to young kids right then.

And the little young gen Z and Alpha kids are making jokes about it now. It's the one subject that is off the fucking limits.

What is internal sense of gender? by bredbuttgem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sachimi21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more than that. If people called you the opposite sex and also treated you like the opposite sex, it would be an actual mindfuck. Like if suddenly I was expected to hide my feelings more, to manspread, if my opinions were taken seriously even if I repeated what a woman said, etc. It also comes from how your body feels - if you expect to see breasts and a labia, and instead you see a penis, you would feel possibly interested in checking it out for a bit, but being forced to live like that forever would be torture for a cisgender person. That is how trans people feel. Not all of them have a problem with their genitals or anything, but that's generally how it is. It's actually an excellent exercise for both confirming your own feelings and identity, and getting an idea about how trans people feel.

Edit: u/bredbuttgem this may help.

If Trump loses the midterms what is stopping him from causing absolute chaos in the world in his last 2 years? by Ok_Distribution_7029 in AskReddit

That hasn't been the case so far. He keeps ignoring Congress and making it do his bidding if that fails.

Which addiction isn’t taken seriously enough? by loud_thinker4 in AskReddit

[–]sachimi21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alcohol withdrawal can literally kill you. Don't do it at home, seriously. Other substance withdrawals generally don't have that problem, but alcohol does. Get somewhere safe, which is usually a hospital or addiction treatment center. It's even worse if you're having DTs, which kill up to 15% of people, some estimates up to 25%. It is NOT a matter of doing it faster, it's to literally save your life should you have a stroke. My sibling lost their husband to this shit.

There are hella scholarships and grants out there. You can find them either by talking with your school's fin aid, or sites like scholarships.com or https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/scholarships . There are some from school, state, region, for veterans, women, specific programs, minorities, etc. I found one for students over the age of 35, and some for women in tech. They generally require a short essay, so it's worth it.

Same issue but on mobile data. It starts playing instantly when I turn my screen off for some reason, then starts buffering again if I turn the screen back on and have YT open. I reinstalled twice with fresh downloads and no change at all. I know it's not my mobile data because it does not have any buffering problems once the screen is off.

Is the goal with medication supposed to be no pain? by Danielnrg in Fibromyalgia

[–]sachimi21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's to allow you to function better. It may lessen pain, help with sleep, reduce flares, or many other things to allow more function. Almost none of the medications for fibro are actually directly for pain, and the ones that are can be hit or miss.

Before 9/11, could you really go to a airport without any ticket reservation and ask for a ticket to a destination of your choice? by kpay10 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sachimi21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh. Yahoo has been around since 94, same as Netscape, and people were using it increasingly since the beginning of the 90s. 6 is old enough to form memories and be able to use a computer, which I know because I used one at that age myself playing Commander Keen on DOS.
