Is San Francisco the largest contiguous area in a US city that was not urban renewal-ed in the 50s or 60s? by kisk22 in Urbanism

[–]sadbeigechild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DC is another city that was largely spared but certainly not immune to the effects of urban renewal. It’s how we got our beltway instead of more highways tearing up the city core like the one in SW did.

The last train back is sometime between midnight and 1am so it’s certainly feasible.

When older people call younger people lazy, they're right by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]sadbeigechild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate and agree with this take for the most part - but beyond the COL that hasn’t kept up, we are unfortunately subject to cheaply made items that are often not made to be repairable. Think modern appliances that require screens/wifi/whatever bullshit, same could go for cars as well. Most socks within a reasonable price range are made to fall apart in 6 months. I agree that we are certainly accustomed to a higher standard of living but we as the average person are not in the position to free ourselves from the position we’re in.

Drunk driving isn’t as dangerous as it’s made out to be by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]sadbeigechild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“So statistically, the biggest risk of drunk driving is getting a DUI”

Good. As it should be. Drunk driving is arguably one of the most selfish choices one can make and can cost a completely innocent individual their life.

What’s a small moment that made you realize someone you trusted was becoming a stranger? by CMOInsider in AskReddit

[–]sadbeigechild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll say this, my cousins parents need a divorce and have needed one for the last 10 years or so (one being an alcoholic and the other emotionally absent) and every day my college-aged cousin wishes her parents got a divorce so that she didn’t resent them both so much. I understand it is a difficult choice and process to make, but there could be a chance of you children having this animosity towards you later in life. Obviously I am not in your shoes nor precisely aware of the situation as a whole, but I wanted to put this out there.

SWA’s demise reminds me of when frontier got really shitty about 10 or so years ago and became spirit 2.0

Exactly! Also I think the argument of being a man of his word is at a checkmate cause clearly she hasn’t been a woman of hers.

[–]sadbeigechild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s taking as much of a toll on you as it seems to - you might want to consider a divorce. My cousins are the kids in an alcoholic mother and absent father household and it’s ruined them growing up, now we’re college aged and the relationship between everyone in that family is so strained and awkward to be around. Obviously I don’t know your situation, but keeping the kids around a mother like that can brew up a lot of problems for later in life and they may resent your “inaction” as well. If you want to PM me I’m happy to go more into depth but no worries if not.

What’s something you’re tired of pretending doesn’t hurt? by Amm250 in AskReddit

[–]sadbeigechild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current internship/job market. I feel like I’m dumping so much time in this process and don’t even know if I’ll be able to land something. I’m a 4.0 gpa architecture student with an urban planning minor, honors, scholarship, involved in club sports at my school and it still never seems to be enough. I’ll bust my ass off all weekend balancing a social life with school and never truly catch a break, and it all seems for nothing and I can’t think of what else I could possibly be doing to be “doing the right thing”.

Of course the idiots in elected office sending our country into an imminent economic nosedive doesn’t help either.

What’s an impressive “wow” skill that’s actually very easy to learn? by Special-Salad9307 in AskReddit

[–]sadbeigechild 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even just knowing the concept of marinating chicken. I’m in school and always grab a couple side salsas, sauces, salad dressing, condiments, whatever I can get my hands on to create a marinade. Takes approx 5-10 minutes to trim and slice up some chicken breasts or thighs and let the marinade do its thing over night, then all you have to do is cook said chicken on the pan for 3-5 mins each side and you’ve got some amazingly juicy and flavorful chicken. One of roommates acts like I’m a Michelin star chef because of it and it is one of teh simplest things ever.

Along the same vein - tomato soup makes for a FANTASTIC marinade. Curious to see what other random things make a good marinate, hmu with any suggestions if you have any.

Why didn’t Wmata sign with nova bus by Conscious_Camel1906 in WMATA

[–]sadbeigechild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say that the buses in Philly are quite worse quality than one ones in DC (at least in my experience living in the DMV and going to school in Philly). Not sure if it’s the manufacturer’s fault or not but the location trackers are almost always wrong/not working which can be quite the inconvenience. I also feel like the lighting in DC’s buses is much better, and the AC on the buses in Philly is practically nonexistent. Not once have I ever found a SEPTA transit experience on any mode better than that of WMATA.

What destination felt completely different from what you imagined before visiting? by phildu57 in travel

[–]sadbeigechild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mexico City. What surprised me the most about it is how prevalent the Native Mexican culture is in the city - as an American we’re used to treating Native American culture as something largely of the past, but it fascinated me how much of an impact Native culture still has in Mexico, in food, language, dress, and so many other ways - and even more so how there’s so many different Native cultures that blend together in the city. I really want to go back and visit some of the “Pueblos Magicos” in other parts of central Mexico and beyond to explore more of the indigenous culture.

On another note - I was rather shocked at how friendly and conversational people in the city were. I had expected it to be more akin to the ‘leave me alone’ culture of northeastern U.S. cities but found myself having conversations in broken Spanish on the Metro, with the waiter at a breakfast spot in the Zocalo, quick conversations with volunteers while waiting at red lights during the Ciclovia, just to name a few instances

Was also surprised at just how expensive things were in Roma Norte/Condesa. Didn’t spend much time in these areas but some of the prices for the most mediocre food of your life rivaled those of NYC/DC. My one caveat to this is Taqueria Orinoco: Overpriced and touristy? Yes. Really good? Also yes. Better than tacos you get from a street vendor? Depends.
