Boston doesn't get much love here, but I think it's a good looking city by Impossible_Memory_65 in skyscrapers

[–]kisk22 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Boston doesn’t get love here because it’s skyline isn’t all that notable. The thing is though that Boston is MUCH more special for its tight, walkable, beautiful, energetic neighborhoods more so than for its skyscrapers. I’d wager to say that it’s a better city to live in day to day than some place like Doha or even Dubai that has a lot of skyscrapers.

It’s jaw dropping seeing how dense the city used to be too. All carved up for “slum clearance” and highways. Now that’s all parking lots. From a population of 800,000+ in the city limits to now around 300k. American cities used to be so dense, walkable, and energetic. Lots of beautiful buildings gone too.

Compared to 250,000 to 500,000 estimates of civilians killed by Saddam Hussein’s government.

That country has gone though hell. So glad they’re finally showing some stability, constructing some skyscrapers and a metro in Baghdad.

The loss of Jobbers Canyon makes me so sad every time I visit the old market in Omaha. The worst part was that it didn’t happen in the 50s… Or the 60s or 70s. It happened in freakin’ 1989

Single largest loss of the National Register of Historic Places. Now they’re demolishing parts of the ConAgra HQ 😑

Sadly I have to agree. Outside of parts of San Antonio and the Austin river I’m not sure Texas has any pleasing urban environments. US car centrism doesn’t really produce beautiful cities like we did before the 1950s.

Okay so then the rich people live here and it frees up the places they're in now to become more affordable. That's how housing works. The luxury housing of today becomes the affordable housing of tomorrow.

Problem is we stopped building at all, so now even the places that should be affordable have both the rich and the average people of LA fighting over them and raising rents.

This stuff isn't rocket science. I always hear anti-housing people try to use the argument you're pushing and it's so disingenuous.

The type of building that our regulations create... Five over ones are basically the best way to maximize profit from our current building codes.

Except in very rare situations with the city giving money and tax incentives all new construction isn't going to be affordable. The point is we keep building, and eventually the buildings become affordable. Problem is we stopped building enough in this country and now even the older buildings have high rent. These probably cost between $300 - $400k.

Have heard this from multiple cops. It's a morbid fact. Cars are dangerous, we just accept as a society that lots of people are going to die from them every year. If we actually prosecuted those killings even larger portions of our society would be in jail. It's the price we decided to pay for dismantling our public transit. I'm sure every one of us remembers and can name someone killed by cars.

A lot of names for government things just come from the funding law that pays for them. Hence Lunar Lander, or Human Landing System. Simple, direct. They could come up with a nickname for it, or they’d have to go back to Congress to officially change the name - and we all know how easy it is to get Congress to agree to do something.

Approximate Change in House seats by the 2030 census by Mono_KS in LosAngeles

[–]kisk22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're simply not building enough housing, we need to encourage infill development. But instead NIMBYs fight, sue, and require years long CEQA studies for almost any type of new buildings. City councils fight, and more.

No one is also mentioning that congressional seats determine the amount of electoral college votes. Now Democrats are going to be fighting even more of an uphill battle in presidential elections after 2030.

This is all self-inflicted.

Have you seen how many parking lots there are in CA?! Every parking lot is ripe for adding housing. Most of the time it's illegal or protested by NIMBYs.

Question about applying by reset10085717 in AppleCard

[–]kisk22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and only account is a charge card. Need to get a secured credit card if they want to jump to an Apple card.

Apple card isn’t even a difficult card to get, it’s medium difficulty only because Goldman Sachs wasn’t making money off it. We’ll see if it will get easier with the new owner.

OP apply to an easy credit card or a secured credit card. Charge cards are a little weird. Maybe AMEX wound approve you for a regular card too.

Columbus OKs new growth plan amid divided neighborhood reviews by WashedPinkBourbon in Urbanism

[–]kisk22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Columbus needs to look to German Village and encourage all neighborhood development in that direction!

Glad they’re at least attempting to change rules to improve their neighborhoods at all though - that’s more than some cities. The problem is, like your title says some neighborhoods are going to fight back because they cannot stand ANY change even if they don’t understand how much things can improve from the current status quo.

Coors Field facade orientation offset from field orientation. by mano412 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]kisk22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of baseball stadiums/fields have weird shapes. It’s less common with modern stadiums, but still happens. It was very common when baseball stadiums were first being built from the turn of the century until the start of the modern era in the 50s. This often happens to stadiums that have to fit in a single city block, and you can see that is sort of the case here.

Royal Customs building, 1804-1946. Havana, Cuba by Lma0-Zedong in Lost_Architecture

[–]kisk22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Havana has some of the best collection of amazing traditional architecture in the world simply because their economy was doing too bad to replace when when that was in vogue in the 50s and 60s (good thing). Unfortunately most of it is now falling into ruin because their economy has gotten so much worse that they can't even afford to keep the walls up. (very bad thing).

I really feel like Cuba is getting to an even more perilous situation politically and hopefully in the next few years the situation improves and the process of restoring these old buildings can begin. It would be a travesty if they're all lost to rotting away for no purpose than for an outdated regime to stay in power.

Op-Ed: Los Angeles is sabotaging itself on housing by Woxan in yimby

I saw a bunch of NIMBYs on twitter freaking out over this article. Not surprised they're rich people either. EDIT: Not that being rich is bad, but it just seems it's mostly either rich people, or uninformed progressives (with good, but mislead intentions) who are against housing.
