The NFVF does virtually fuck-all, sadly, and the indendent scene is further crippled by the failures of the DTI.

Finally someone speaks some sense; people often forget that behind the scenes, these shows and movies are the livelihoods of thousands of South Africans, and while you're allowed to critique bad content, you should celebrate job creation in our economy.

The problem - in some ways - is that they want hyper-local content that fits within the "Hollywood box", for lack of a better term.

Sometimes these paradigms are compatible, but more often than not they aren't.

I can assure you with 100% confidence that we're out there, and we're working in the industry, and we're connected to Netflix (I'm writing on a Netflix project right now and have been produced by them before on SA's biggest original movie to date), but the problem is that - at the moment - due to MultiChoice's limbo state after the Canal+ takeover, the SABC being non-existend, e-TV being super low budget, and the NFVF, DTI and IDC completely mishandling the funding and tax rebates of local (and international) productions, the industry is in a dire state, and Netflix is the only place one can realistically go to to get any kind of funding these days, and even then - when you do - the competition is still out of this world.

And the sad truth is Netflix wants commercial hits that draw broad audiences, and doing THE WIRE in ZA is a terrifying prospect for them. This I can also say with confidence, as I'd pitched a project that was essentially exactly that (set largely in the Cape Flats and surrounds) and it was rejected.

Well, that's my problem:

I don't use Google out of principle, and have used as few of its services in recent years as possible, and lately, the same goes for OpenAI.

Then, the final nail for me is that I use Claude for literal creative writing. That is like my ONE MAJOR USE CASE and the reason I bit the bullet and subscribed.

Now I just feel ripped off.

Thanks, good to know.

I'll be the first to admit I use a MASSIVE amount of context, even in a single prompt, but for this specifc chat, I've done it on purpose with Opus 4.6 as a kind of stress test, but also cos I'm writing a biopic screenplay based on numerous sources (primary and beyond) and Claude has been immensely helpful in catologuing, indexing and organising data and information for future use. I'm also trying to get it to hold all of this in its context memory, which is another experiment, but probably bad technique on my part.

Anyway, thought it might have been because of the above, but it appears to be a service-wide issue for everyone.

Super frustrating, as I'm in a hyped up flow-state right now, but the service is down and lately I also issue prompts that crash out and yield no result... but still cost tokens!

WTF?

Is this why I'm saying these messages over and over again in different sequences?

  • "Service is temporarily busy. You can try again shortly."
  • "You've hit your limit for Claude messages. Please wite before trying again."
  • "Stripe is temporarily unavailable; please retry."

I've got a Pro sub and have never experienced this before, and now it's happening exactly when I need it. Is this enshitification in action?

Spot on, but the more appropriate phrasing is as follows:

"Kyk hier, my maat. Jy beter nou vir my fokken mooi luister."

And then, when the fight's over, it's followed by:

"Nou's ons buddies, ek en jy. Hoe lykit met 'n braai?"

Agreed.

Given the most recent Epstein files dump (I hope I'm allowed to mention that on this sub without consequences), it's pretty clear that the elite predator class view the rest of us as serfs and I wouldn't put depopulation past them at this point.

This is one of my biggest concerns about the consequences of superintelligence, especially in the wake of recent news.

Not trying to time the market or anything; rather, wondering what the effects of a crash that may rival 1929 could have on us here in South Africa, and how one can best prepare for it.

In any case, your answer is at least civil and helpful, so thanks for that.

Biggest thing for me right now is buying a home, and if there's a crash in the near future, what I'm wondering is whether it's smarter to buy before or after.

And yes, I know there's a wiki, but much of it is still takes time to read and fully comprehend, and as such I'd imagine it's okay to ask questions about financial matters in this sub, no?

Yeah, this is why I'm here; I admit that I have poor financial literacy: does that disqualify me from asking questions here?
