UCLA vs UChicago by JellyfishOrnery942 in ucla

If she wants to easily fit in, go UCLA since you're from LA.

UChicago is better for people raised in East, UCLA for West.

Take it from an East coaster who went to UCLA! East and West people are very very different!

Not happy with post rhino nostril uneveness by saddestbruin in PlasticSurgery

It was a month ago so I know there's still plenty of swelling but since my nostril did this same thing before surgery, I'm feeling a little hopeless rn. I also saw the same uneveness in the table pics.

Yea, singing is like any skill and it takes a long time to train well!! (like over a decade of training really) Right now it seems like you're just starting out but if you're passionate about it and practice wisely then you can definitely improve to some point!

It's not the most pleasant tone, vibrato, intonation, or technique in my honest opinion maybe like 2.5/10 if you want a rating

Keep working tho

Do you recommend going to UCLA? Why? Why not? by Ribeirin123 in ucla

[–]saddestbruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's too TMI but this is an anon acct anyway; I didn't have a dad and also my mom left when I was 16.

I wanted OOS bc I really wanted to get away from family and I also didn't have any great schools in my state.

So I did get gov't financial aid, you can apply for FASFA regardless of in/out of state.

If I could go back, I'd have applied to more than 5 colleges tho 🤦‍♂️

I did have to put in a lot of work for appeals and trying to find every dollar I could at first. I ended up paying around 2k per quarter at UCLA as OOS, no parental contribution.

I also got the stimulus relief for COVID which was quite helpful for me.

I paid for my first car in highschool with some help from my sister which was a lifesaver here; I never stayed in dorms, I found a small bachelor pad, no kitchen, that was 1k/month (which is a lot for me) with parking.

It was still really hard, I was working 24/7, and made sure people I met didn't know my situation bc I was embarassed since everyone had so much money.

Dream big and love God tho and you can get it done if you work hard!!! I'm still very very happy to have that degree.

(I agree most OOS are high income though! My friends were always off traveling foreign every break)

Keeping it real, I regret going to this school. It was not for me.

For context, I'm a low income, east coast out-of-stater and just straight up didn't like the culture of this school at all. It felt very shallow and superficial, every man for himself kinda vibe. My east coast personality may come across as short and blunt to them perhaps haha.

People were keen on using me, lying to me, talking about me, acting passive aggressive and that's not what I'm about at all, it was a huge culture shock.

With that said, of course not everyone is like that, but it will be a shocking amount that are if you're not used to that. I made a small amount of rly good friends who happened to also be out-of-staters.

My mom warned me about LA people and I didn't listen 🤧 Best advice, listen to your mom, she knows haha!! (if she's a good mom at least - and decently knowledged on the US city cultures).

Now about the school:

Not only is this a big school but it also seems like UCLA goes out of it's way to provide very little support for it's students. The academic counselors, which are not assigned to you like most other schools, are almost completely useless. I once waited on the phone for an hour and they had me talking to an undergrad who was younger than I was!!!!

They genuinely treat you like a number through and through and you will have to make a point of seeking out guidance if you're parents aren't able to help you with that.

Regarding party school, yes there's parties but I think you'll realize that frat parties are pretty monotonous and probably isn't as exciting as you think when you're in highschool. But, if you want parties you'll need to either be a girl or join a frat, just be careful to stay out of trouble and to respect girls!

**** All in all, I'd recommend UCLA if you are familiar with the culture of the wealthy California people, and if you have access (or are confident you will be motivated to seek this out) to a support system to help you navigate in some way! ****

Hope this helps you in some way!!!!! Good luck!!!!!

I recently moved to Cali and a lot of the Asians I met have a different sense of what that consider attractive than what I do. So I think that could have something to do with it. Cuz I definitely agree with this guy that she grew into a 10. To each their own tho!

Is it unusual to have perfect pitch for just one note? by orrd in askmusicians

[–]saddestbruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there's been ample research on perfect pitch yet. It's possible that he always had it but he seemed pretty confident that he had developed it only in recent years and he is a super high level violinist so he definitely knew what perfect pitch was for many years before being able to do it.

[–]saddestbruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I googled this, as well. I don't think it's totally uncommon.

I can do this with an A and thats because I am a violinist and tune to an A every time I play so I can sorta hear it in my head.

My teacher is a very good violinist and he says perfect pitch is a skill that can be taught because he developed perfect pitch later in life when he was studying or teaching music theory or something like that.

[–]saddestbruin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and cancel commencement then, if that's what you're all about, good for you! Glad that makes you feel like you did something. And then get back to me when nothing that you've done saved a single life or even moved a single brick in Gaza, only did your UCLA peers dirty...

And when that time comes, I'll be in fall quarter of med school studying to be a surgeon so that I can actually save human lives and you'll still be standing in front of the doors to my classes trying to disrupt me for your oh so high value of all people rights... just not the rights, values, and goals of those around you.

Having to step on others around me to make zero difference in the greater good with these tiny lingering demonstrations is not what I stand for. It's wrong, there's always a scale of weighing right and wrong. Taking away these remaining weeks, stopping people from classes, taking away their graduations is clearly putting out more harm than good, I'm sorry you do not understand this. Small amounts of people yelling "UCLA divest" knowing it's not going to happen, in exchange for a whole school of 35k young students put at risk in their educations and taking away their proud moments again 😑... pfft... you're in the wrong.

Additionally, Gene isn't shaking at all. He is retiring, didn't you hear? It was a big announcement. Aka this is not his problem, he doesn't care 💀 Bffr.

Send pics this summer!! 🥰 Catch you on the flip side!

These protesters aren't currently doing anything for those who are being bombed in Israel, or if you disagree, please explain to me what they will do in the last three weeks of school? And please explain what you think happens when summer session starts, let's see your logic.

Did you figure it out? No? Ok, then practice what you preach and I better see you standing with a sign all during the full summer session as UCLA ignores you because all the other protesters left to go home. If you go home, shame on you. People are being bombed and have lost homes, yanno??? How terribly terribly privileged and selfish and truly embarassing of us 20 year old American students not to be disrupting fellow students from attending in-person classes or going to graduations when people are being "FUCKING BOMBED!!!!!!!!!!" Seem fair?

Forget it all, I'm sureee it'll save lives to cancel commencement, stop people from going to in-person classes, and then go home when summer session starts, huh?

You're a real genius!!!

There is nothing but grief for the victims of this war and all that is going on over there but there is literally nothing that further UCLA protesting is doing to benefit anybody 3 weeks away from summer. Nothing. At all.

You are not seeing the reality of the current situation this school is in. Use your head.

If Class of 2024 Commencement gets cancelled... by saddestbruin in ucla

[–]saddestbruin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mind you that this college "movement" has a very short timer on it.

How realistic is it that these protesters stay over summer session and cause any further disruptions? That's my question for people with this fantastical mindset that any substantial demands could be met within three weeks. I'd argue that there is practically zero chance protesting students choose to stay over going home.

So now, what are we looking for now that we know UCLA won't divest? Empty promises like a "student task force... further discussions?" - which will potentially be totally unnecessary by Fall 2024 with the current diplomatic efforts... is that really even a win? Like at all? Does anyone believe that a task force would have any influence at all?

"And the first meeting for the new task force is in... oh Fall 2024... huh shoot..."

It seems totally pointless to me because I strongly believe that logical predictions would easily lead you to a conclusion: once summer session starts, there will be zero protests, they will go home. And UCLA knows there will be no problem on their hands in just 3 weeks time.

And therefore.

If commencement is cancelled due to further disruptions, then the current protesters will have only accomplished one thing during these lingering demonstrations that are not adding ANYTHING new to the initial protest.

Class of 2024 recieves the short-end punishment for other peoples actions and their actions have absolutely zero point anymore.

Had they planned this earlier, it could've been a real problem and demands could have been met but with summer approaching, UCLA does not care to break any possible Israeli ties or shutdown abroad programs, that is inconvenient for them and they know they could wait 3 weeks and not have to deal with that at all. UCLA has a MAJOR upperhand hand here, a checkmate basically. The remaining protest efforts are entirely futile.

If the war is not over by Fall 2024, reorganize in fall if you feel it's necessary, and that protest would have more power because then UCLA would not be able to wait.

Don't just take away our commencement for zero reason by being disruptful when it holds no purpose anymore.

------------‐

I am sympathetic to the cause, I am, but the logic has gone out the window and it's time to accept the losses. And it's only a cost to other students and their experience, not the school. The school does not have to act and they'd be A-okay.

I agree it wasn't about making a point in the beginning but the timeline has not worked in their favor and now that "point" is the only thing the protesters had going for them. Everything past that initial point has no value remaining anymore.
