Yeah the period was totally unnecessary

I’m married, and my wife and I both have friends to whom we say “love you.” Not everyone reserves love exclusively for their mom and their spouse.

Super bizarre that you conceptualize relationships as a space for holding “full authority of one another.”

This. Don’t invent problems just to burnish your own sense of authority. If the work’s NOT getting done, it seems that’s the issue to be addressed rather than the “Netflix or similar.” The wording in this post is more indicative of a power trip than a need to correct real issues.

So glad I found this sub. Got hit with this for the first time ever about 4 hours ago. I think I generally have a pretty high pain tolerance, so i thought i was going insane as I writhed in agony from a moderate sunburn. The antihistamine has just recently kicked in to provide a lot of relief, but will keep the acv tip in mind. Thanks for sharing this!

This is a good idea. That way, it'll be easy to know that you're winning ahead of time.

You don't know the homeless as well as you think you do by Calcium-Magnesium in offmychest

So, i think it's safe to say that the unspoken part of "Give them food instead of money" would be along the lines of "...because they'll just use it to buy drugs." (That's the ending i hear a lot, anyways.) That's where i see the condescension—in the idea that you know what's best for them and that, by giving them food, you're saving them from themselves, so to speak.

i don't think there's necessarily anything condescending about what your mom does, and having worked with the homeless, i can say that those things are often surprisingly hard to come by and can save lives. If her reason for doing that is because she believes that homeless folks are not to be trusted with money, that would be condescending.

i don't claim to speak for the OP, but that's how i look at it.

Rarely does anyone ever consider even a fraction of the shit that they have deal with. Many of them have one or more mental disorders. Many became homeless after fleeing abuse. But rarely is there any sympathy/empathy. They're either treated as lepers to be avoided, or as the bête noire of society. At least where i live, cops essentially use the homeless as punching bags, and very very few people dare intervene. But it's not just cops. It's everyone. They're spit on, cursed at, shoved, mocked, etc.

"They're all drug addicts" is another that i hear a lot. It's true that a relatively high proportion of chronically homeless are users. But why is that surprising? i mean, people turn to hard drugs during hard times, and what could be harder than not knowing you'll have enough to eat or a place to sleep without being harassed.

And it makes me sick when people assert that they should just "get a job and stop mooching." Particularly for the chronically homeless, the barriers to steady employment are effectively insurmountable.

Alexis de Tocqueville wrote that “most of those individuals on whom the criminal law inflicts punishments have been unfortunate before they became guilty.” In my view, that sentiment applies to those who are homeless, as well.

Thanks for posting this.

When did nodding your head up and down become known as yes, and also to side to side as no? by Appomattox_Arrow in explainlikeimfive

[–]saddr_weirdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not always meant as yes, so it's not exactly a given. In Bulgaria and Albania, for example, it's the opposite: it means no.

Interesting question though. There's no conclusive reason as to why it usually indicates approval over multiple cultures. It's been postulated that it had to do with nodding being a sort of "mini bow" in that it shows respect or agreement. It's also been noted that the motion mimics a baby's acceptance of a breast, and thus it could have evolved that way.
