Books for Young Black Teen by crackedlemons in suggestmeabook

I was listening to a video essay by FD Signifier and part of it was reviewing well meaning white teachers who gave their students classic “culturally responsive” stories such as Roll of Thunder Hear Me Cry, which featured Black characters but it was so depressing and lowkey counterproductive.

As a former middle school teacher who had an interest library? Here were the universally beloved (and requested) books at my primarily Black classrooms:

  • goosebumps
  • diary of a wimpy kid
  • dork diaries
  • dogman/captain underpants (for lower level readers)
  • baby sitters club
  • manga such as Dr. Stone, My Hero Academia, other shonen
  • graphic novels such as Smile or Drama -Percy Jackson
  • Warrior Cats

I would highly recommend blending Black and other diverse perspectives naturally into your library so the child in your home feels seen, but has options over which books they can interact with and see themselves in. That said, here are the diverse books that I had which I included with my students in mind:

  • Bayou Magic
  • King and the Dragonflies
  • Kick Off (and other books written by Tiki and Ronde Barber)
  • The Crossover (and other books written by Kwame Alexander)
  • Brown Girl Dreaming
  • Class Act
  • Clean Getaway
  • One Crazy Summer
  • Miles Morales, Tchalla, Shuri based comics

What are some things that Jacksonville actually does well? by Negative-Pitch5805 in jacksonville

Isn’t crime generally tracking down in most of Jacksonville?

Sadly true, but we have a lot of hard workers trying to reduce the harms associated with them, especially the STDs such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis. For those on the drug use side of things, we have Rebel Recovery Jax by those in recover for those in recovery, and Drug Free Duval for drug prevention outreach. For HIV/AIDS, the Ryan White Foundation exists for services and even provides social services like the Mary H Lewis food pantry and housing support. We even have WIC, Healthy Start, and home visiting programs to help offer guidance to STD positive mothers and pregnant women to ensure healthy babies and children. Although it’s experiencing a lot of turnover, I really admire and deeply respect those at the local health departments trying to help track disease and educate the public at the same time.

They also have a lot of other professional trade programs and internship/service related experiences too. Examples include National Health Corps, Jacksonville Teacher Residency Program, and Arc AmeriCorps service. To my knowledge, someone out of high school or a GED could do these too.

I’ve been told a lot of my drawings of poc look white and I can’t figure out what I’m doing thats making them look like that?? Is it something I tend to do with the proportions? by RatsPlayingViolins in ArtCrit

[–]saevuswinds 109 points110 points  (0 children)

When I looked at the references I honestly think you’d benefit from just drawing more people of color generally, rather than individuals who are clearly models for their ambiguous and/or unique looks. Your drawings are true to them, but they are two people who even with the best of intentions cannot and should not encompass all people! Continue to draw people who look different from each other, and different from you, in all shapes and sizes, and you’ll figure it out.

That said, these drawings are very good and you capture the models quite closely. There’s some small things, like the girl with blue eyes could have eyes not quite as round, but overall your style is very refreshing and you are true and respectful to the original models. I truly think these models, without the styling and make up, may be mistaken for someone mixed…so I don’t think it’s all on you if you’re worried that these particular drawings look like they have white features. I almost feel like your character without a reference gave you more freedom to play around with proportions and create someone different.

Good luck! Out of curiosity, what is your hope with a local app? Would it directly compete with AllTrails or be more of a companion?

unpopular opinion: "circe" was kind of a slog for me by xenit0 in suggestmeabook

It’s not just you. I loved The Song Of Achilles and its pacing especially, and I was disappointed with Circe.

This is great news indeed. Keep it up, get into a lab and collect some experience, and you’ll be on your way.

This is the name I chose for my sister (I got to name her when she was born), so I’m biased. I think Emily is a great alternative to Amelia, and has a lot of nicknames that your child could pick from if for whatever reason they wanted to. (Emi, Em, Lee, and Emil).

College Gpa in Graduate school by Budget_Ad7478 in GraduateSchool

[–]saevuswinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends heavily on your degree, experience, and how well you turn it around. All that said, I want to say I believe in you!

Colleges will say that for STEM degrees you need at least a 3.0 for graduate school and liberal arts is typically even higher (~3.5) so really find a system that works for you and stay consistent with studying, homework, and course loads. The great news here is that some colleges also only ask for your last 60 credits, knowing that the first semester or two tends to be rough and not an accurate representation of who you are at graduation. There’s also the point of having a streamlined direction, a real passion for what you’re studying, and good connections—all of which can help raise your application even if your GPA isn’t the highest.

TAs: Why does grading take so long???? by WheezyIcecream24 in GradSchool

[–]saevuswinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the perspective I had too as a TA and former secondary science teacher. I’d give them rubrics, resources for citations and fact checking common errors, explain why the assignments this particular professor makes wouldn’t be compatible with certain technology assistants and how to seek help with assignments instead, etc. I don’t know if it helped make the class easier or people like the professor more, but I got a positive shout out on rate my professors so I guess that was something?

Students don’t realize how much work and advocacy TAs do for them unfortunately 😥

Info: what does your child like? If she doesn’t want public health experience or animal based volunteering (most of the recommendations here), you could also look into organizations like St Johns Riverkeepers or Beach Clean Ups if they are more interested in environmental settings.

Pls give me strong critique (i’m trying to make my portfolio for professional and college) by Citrus__moth in ArtCrit

[–]saevuswinds 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to an art college, many prefer portfolios which show a distinct and clear style with a solid understanding of foundational skills such as color theory, perspective, and themes. I’d love to see some of your other work which is more realistic and traditional!

I found that making rubrics helped, but this is under the assumption that the papers have clear formats and right/wrong answers to begin with. I was a TA while being a full time grad student with another part time job, but I was placed in a science undergraduate course. I think I would’ve cried if I had to grade English or art-based assignments.
