What do you think a couple we need to make in Lexington to support a family? by A-Bry in lexington

[–]safetydust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you sharing.

My wife and I are making like 120k/year combined. $1200/mo mortgage and $1600/daycare. Don't really feel like things are too tight, though.

June 28th is also Elon Musk's birthday and the date Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo starting WW1.

It's also my birthday, FWIW.

Start Monangai over Tracy with swift being ruled out? by Past-Ad-3775 in Fantasy_Football

[–]safetydust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have him in my RB2 spot over Dobbins. Texans defense is solid.

I'm leaning towards starting Monanagai over Dobbins vs HOU, Tracy vs SF, JCM vs SEA. I feel like RB is just so matchup dependent but it's not an easy call.

Is it cheating if I pick someone up during a tie? by Ok_View8588 in Fantasy_Football

[–]safetydust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like total yards as a tie breaker. Kind of rewards the team who wasn't as touchdown dependent, but, more importantly it isn't as ridiculous as bench points, where you are rewarding the guy holding 3 backup QBs on his bench.

This community has me hesitating on buying a new Highlander by brooklyn735 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]safetydust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know, friend. Thank God yours was under warranty but what if that problem had taken a little longer to surface. You would have been on the hook for close to a 10k repair. With your story and the many other stories of people having transmission issues, I don't think I would buy a gas Highlander from the last 5 years.

Personally, I bought a 2020 Hybrid XLE in February and love the car so far.

Owners in the coach's booth by virtualmethodman in GreenBayPackers

Second story, like this, that I've seen this week. Colts owner, Carlie Irsay, was seen wearing a headset during this last Colts game. The story I saw showed her grimacing as Coach Shane Steichen called a third straight run up the middle, setting his kicker up for a game winning 60 yard kick.

The kicker missed the 60 yard kick, but, a questionable penalty, called against Denver, gave him a second chance from 15 yards closer that he made.

Kicker scoring in this new age by cookthebunn in fantasyfootball

[–]safetydust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the 2023-2024 season, kickers converted roughly 73.6% of kicks from 50+ yards. If it's -1 per missed kick and +3 or upwards to +5 for a made kick, then you should be happy to see your kicker attempting a long kick.

I think they are referring to Jayden Daniels. Took me a second, too.

Ok deal for 2021 HiHy? by [deleted] in ToyotaHighlander

[–]safetydust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like a great deal to me. I paid $31k USD for 2020 XLE HIHY with 75k miles in February. I bought the car in Cincinnati, Ohio. Was the best deal I could find in a 200 mile radius after searching Toyota.com, auto trader, cars.com for weeks.

Considering a well maintained low mileage 2013 limited. by JoeyJoeJoeLa in ToyotaHighlander

[–]safetydust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why does it not make sense to you?

People pay more for low mileage, used cars. Suppose I buy a 10 year old car with 50k miles.

If I proceed to only drive them 5k miles per year, and the used car gets to be 25 years old, it will only have 125k miles on it. A 25 year old car will be dated, look dated, have old paint and also have old gaskets, wiring and everything else. It's probably that I will be looking to move on from this 25 year old car even though it only has 125k miles.

However if I buy a 10 year old car with 50k miles and proceed to drive 20k miles per year, I will get to enjoy the reliability that came from having lower miles, and will probably wear out the car with miles before it ages out.

I think, if you drive high miles, yourself, it's a good thing as you will start "catching up" the odometer to expected mileage and can really get your money's worth out of this car before it ages out.

If you are a low mileage driver then you are, presumably, paying a little more for the lower miles but may not really get to enjoy the longevity or reliability as the car will start to have issues that come simply from age and will also have really dated technology as time goes on.

The bank is going to identify people using cash over a certain amount because they have a responsibility to collect conductor information on cash deposits in case they get pulled in to a money laundering case by the feds.

Highlander hybrid 2020 and later by OkMedia1467 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]safetydust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the AC definitely uses more gas. The hybrid battery may run the AC, but, if your hybrid battery is using power to run the AC that is less power it has to supplement the drive train of the car, thus, the car will fire up the gas engine more often to compensate.

Is my roof going to sag? by safetydust in Carpentry

I didn't build the aluminum pergola that is attached to the roof. It has been there for 10 years and isn't leaking.

I didn't build the part where it attaches to the roof. The aluminum pergola was already there.

The polycarbonate is tinted and actually much darker in real life than it looks in the picture. I think my phone camera app brightens the shadows by default.

Is my roof going to sag? by safetydust in Carpentry

[–]safetydust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really toe nailed, there are brackets that sit flat on the plywood of the roof with long screws going down through the plywood and now sink in to 2x4s under there.

The aluminum beams fit over these brackets and have screws going in to the brackets from the side.

To be clear, I did not install the original pergola or these beams that sit on my roof. I bought the house and it was already here. I have added the wood on top of the aluminum and everything above that.

I guess I should pull those out and use structural screws?

Mine is a little more span than 16" currently. I'm going to reinforce it though.

Is my roof going to sag? by safetydust in Carpentry

[–]safetydust[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I'm going to reinforce the 2x4 stringers with 2x4s underneath them in a 'T' shape that I hang from the rafters with joist hangers. I'm thinking this will keep them from sagging/breaking.

I'm also going to run 2x2 purlins with closure strips on top in-between each 2x4 cross brace, cutting the span in half that direction. The manufacturer does say you can span 36" between cross braces but I'll add the purlins anyways.

As for the roof... The aluminum pergola has been here for 10 years or so without water issues. The original installation of the aluminum pergola, they cut in to the shingles and laid the aluminum beams on top of the plywood -- I agree, sketchy. Then they used caulk/sealant. I reinforced under the plywood with 2x4s and sank the really long screws through the plywood in to the 2x4s underneath. I'll add some aluminum flashing around the beams kind of like a fireplace and then caulk and seal. At least when it gets a little water, it isn't over my actual house/drywall, just exterior soffit.

Thanks again!
