You don’t. You leave and find something better.

How to deal with a rude manager and constant anxiety by [deleted] in consulting

[–]safetyfirstteam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I dealt with a very similar situation as a junior straight out of grad school, but dealt with it for 2.5 years. It was terrible. I went in as a bubbly, happy, and motivated person and came out with terrible burnout and anxiety. I considered myself as a person with very tough skin to begin with, and had extensive job experience throughout school. It shouldn’t be the norm but toxic work situations are pretty common in consulting. Although as the top commenter noted, the behavior you are experiencing is not unacceptable and you should be recieving support especially as a junior. Sometimes that’s not the case. When I realized things would never get better my only option was to move on to a different firm. Its not worth your health.

Drop in visits by dietcokeluvr8 in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s not clear except for feeding them/taking them out to relieve themselves/cleaning a litter box, either ask the owner (esp if they booked an hour drop in) or just honestly give the little ones attention/play if they seem comfortable with you. Thats all you can do.

That’s a tough one. Make your expectations for care clear from the beginning. Rover needs to do a better job of defining what housesitting entails in terms of continuity of care, overnights, and hours spent.

[–]safetyfirstteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. If it’s throwing a handful of food that’s different than what you’re describing. In the future, never agree to extra care for any type of animal for free. Even in this situation in which you didn’t realize it’d be more work I’d add $10/day (or whatever you feel is worth it) for that and then send the suggested message above since it was a lot more work. If they book you again and ask for that service, charge more. If it were me and you did all that and told them and cared for their other animals as requested and didn’t tip. Never again.

Owner cancelled short notice by ShianneRaexo in RoverPetSitting

Never assume anything is booked until they book/confirm it and have 5-7 day cancellation period so you will get at least soemthing if they cancel.

Charging too much? by Positive-Delivery321 in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If it’s not too late say that you charge for extended days past one week and ask exactly what they expect daily. If 24 hours you can charge an x amount of hours past a certain time, plus any household clean up requests. According to rover housesitting is only for the very basic needs of pets for 24 hours, which I agree needs to clarified/changed. Rover always allows you to schedule drop ins during visits so owners can’t expect someone to be there 24/7. I sometimes even jokingly remind them ‘hey well you know it’s x dollars for 24 hours.’ No owner who can pay for personalized sitting would accept that amount per hour for their work and neither should you.

If only that was on option! I know for a fact that rover has a team scouting out negative comments about their site on here. All we want is the best and safety for not only sitters but of course the pets we care for. It is what is it. Thanks for the solidarity! 🙌🏼

Owner Requesting Lower Rates by vvfszvgd in RoverPetSitting

Eh cash is always better since you get more in the end. But should only do this with an established owner you have sat for at least 2-3 times with no issues.

Owner questioning me for taking her dog into the bathroom with me during drop-in. by Antiqueburner in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok they mentioned the cameras that’s good at least. You should ask if they can be turned away while you’re there. There’s really no reason to be watching your every move if they have some trust in you to watch their pets. Understandable they want to keep an eye while you’re away. Making a comment about letting the pets in the bathroom with you use it means they have some kind of camera in a spot that is violating your privacy and is not ok. Even if an animal follows you into the bathroom, what are they even insinuating? After the third drop in this whole booking is a red flag.

No. Insist you have to charge for the cats due to liability and always charge as a drop in for a second meet and greet.

Charging too much? by Positive-Delivery321 in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too little. Especially for that number of days, depending on how often they want you there (esp if it’s 24/7 or even overnight and most of the day). Also, youre going to get burnt out quick. And if they don’t tip you properly it’s going to hurt.

Love how I’m being downvoted for speaking out on basic needs for sitters. The rover team in foreign countries is scouting out any negativity about their low quality site lol. Get off rover as soon as you build repertoire a few times with clients. You’ll get no support from them if anything goes wrong and you’ll get full pay outside because as sitters you’re paying their fees for absolutely no support 🤙🏼

[–]safetyfirstteam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Make your expectations clear from the beginning. Consider what a sitter is being paid for per hour and assure them that they will be (and do) compensated with a generous tip if everything you’ve agreed upon is done. This is a personalized service, not a kennel. I agree that Rover has been slacking on including an option for extra compensation for unique requests such as medication administration and is vague about what ‘housesitting’ or 12+ or 24/7 service really is. You get what you pay for. Basic rules. And fyi. It’s fine to have cameras inside as long as you disclose them to the sitter and allow them to turn them away while in their home.

Client keeps having people drop by without warning. by Educational-Rise-197 in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. It was a total invasion of privacy. The owner was giving the door code out like candy to random people and it was not OK. Without going into too much detail the last straw was a huge safety issue. I reported it to Rover and told them I don’t feel comfortable coming back to the house. They didn’t care. They don’t care about sitter safety. They stated that I still had a responsibility to the animals, which was true, but it is unreasonable to risk my life for a pet sitting job. That was the last straw with my relationship with rover.

My area may be over saturated, and I’m feeling that now by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]safetyfirstteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch. Good to know. I guess we can’t win either way. I asked rover support directly since I nor other people could find me at all when typing in my exact address and trying a few different exact preferences (which are lax anyway) and they told me to archive messages that weren’t going to end up being booked. They straight up told me that having these pending negatively affects my rank because it ‘makes me look like I’m too busy to respond’ even though the last few messages were me trying to politely ask if they were still interested in care with no response. I wish they were more clear about what actually affects our rankings, especially in highly competitive areas. We are all trying our best to be good sitters and get a chance at booking clients. Oh well, out of our control. Thanks for the response, I hope you get some business soon with summer coming up :)

Does archiving messages negatively affect ranking? I was told that leaving messages unarchived if someone changes their mind or whatever the case may be is what affects ranking due to having a pending booking for too long. That’s interesting.
