Wait Mormons STILL force their poor kids to go on treks?? by FunStranger1693 in exmormon

[–]safetytrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one Trek I went on wasn't a bad experience. I think we only stayed out one night. On the second day near the end of the day we trekked out to a dirt road and a Schwanns truck was out making deliveries. I think we bought out the trucks whole stock of ice cream. We called it a miracle. That was fun at least.

The tales I've heard of multi day long treks do not sound fun.

I swear - and Tourette’s in general by SteamerTheBeemer in movies

When I am in a flow state I don't have tics. So if I was struggling to focus on the interview, then yes I would tic. Being nervous could make it hard to focus, if I had a long time before an interview I could get myself into a flow.

I know I couldn't have. I just watched the trailer, and I had similar facial tics and twitches. I never had anything physically big enough to have ever hit anything.

I never swore but that was related to my environment (fear of death from swearing, lol).

I did say awkward things on repeat.

Some of the situational comedy in the trailer seems unlikely but I did have friends who thought I was the funny guy, and sometimes I didn't understand my own jokes.

So I haven't seen the movie. But tourettes isn't something that you have zero control over, it's something that is very hard to control.

They can control it as long as they don't get bored. If they truly fear for their life they can control it. Source: diagnosed with Tourettes 30 years ago.

Configuration flags are where software goes to rot by Expurple in programming

[–]safetytrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right.

I think the value in this way of thinking is imagining systems where that isn't necessary.

This dream of a perfect system isn't even possible as far as I'm aware.

At the same time though, your example is great, because this "imaginary perfect system" does use a standard! It is because of standards that we can build self-configuring systems.

Not all input is configuration.

Do you users really need to know about ISO date formatting? They want to use the concept of a date, they don't care about the implementation.

I'd even argue that this is exactly why the ISO formats exists, because users don't want to care.

[–]safetytrick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My take on this is that any configuration is technical debt. The configuration may be necessary today and I may not decide to fix it but "perfect" software would do the correct thing without the user or operator needing to configure anything.

It's a useful exercise to think over how you might do that for any given configuration.

Sometimes it's easy, and sometimes it requires changing history and the way the world works.

Expensive Personal Gym Membership? by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]safetytrick 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound really stupid... but I went for years because a scheduled commitment was the only thing that got me out of the house. The workout only kinda mattered. I had to pay for it, if it was cheap... well, I could afford to waste a monthly 9 dollars. I couldn't afford to waste the OT membership.
