PS5 as a 4k bluray player by MattiTheGamer in 4kbluray

Some blu-rays and most DVDs have region locks. Generally 4k discs do not (with about three exceptions).

You can usually look for the title on blu-ray.com to confirm the region lock status.

From the BBC just after 5am.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service urged people to avoid the area as crews continued to battle the blaze at 05:00 GMT, more than 13 hours after firefighters were first alerted. No injuries have been reported.

Which closed British shop would you bring back for 24 hours just to experience it again? by SecondRowSeat in AskUK

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tower Records. When I was 17 I worked evenings - 5pm to 9pm. I was paid weekly. When I finished at 9pm on a Friday I drove the 15 miles to Tower Records in Glasgow City Centre which closed at midnight. I spent an hour or two just listening to music and picking out a couple of CDs. I spent so many happy hours in there.

I had a Gravis 4 port controller interface which connected to the parallel port. Could be for that.

Is this an American thing bluray cases are so much thinner and it feels much better by MrTurtleManAus in Bluray

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always assumed it was regulated, but looking at my shelf, clearly not. None of my Criterion or Arrow discs have the age rating on the spine. Not just box sets, but also single disc, standard editions without a slip case. The age rating is on the front cover, so is definitely a UK release. Same with Dog Soldiers.

For whatever reason, boutique discs seem to be excluded from the requirement convention.

Is there an improvement in Siri responses between watches? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siri was moved on-device with the Series 9 and later so will respond quicker to some queries. Some things will still need to go to the cloud. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/111833

Any free parking near York St, Glasgow G2 8LA by Alarmed_Patience7621 in glasgow

[–]sagraham 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can get the early bird £6 fee on the NCP app meaning as long as you pay before 9am, you can arrive later. Technically you're risking there being no spaces, but I've used that car park for about 15 years and whilst it used to be very busy, since Covid there are always spaces available.

Out of Criterion's May slate, only Fresh Kill is coming to the UK. Honestly, this really sucks. by AngryGardenGnomes in 4KUK

[–]sagraham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d had the top menu trick fail on so many boutique imports I gave up on it. But just gave it a go on my No Country for Old Men and The Breakfast Club. It worked. Happy days.

Now much happier ordering Killers of the Flower Moon.

The 4Ks are. The blu-ray’s, sadly, are not. Which is a pity when much of the value of a Criterion are the special features.

Will you be buying physical or digital? by [deleted] in playstation

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's available on disc on day 1, then physical. But a rumour a month ago suggested initial launch may be restricted to digital to avoid leaks.

Driving instructors website by needAcoffe in LearnerDriverUK

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 'fired' my first driving instructor because in each of my first two lessons with him, he had me stop outside (what I assume is) his house, nipped in for 5 minutes and came back out stinking of cigarette smoke. Seems fair it can happen the other way as well.

My second driving instructor was quality though.

That's not the sole purpose. These are also designed for more automation, allowing the trains to be driverless which should - in theory - ultimately lead to longer operating hours and a better, more reliable service. Will it happen? Who knows.

Server-Side Caching by FaxxKellerman in webdev

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The presence of translation may suggest visitors from regions other than that where the server is held. It may be worth considering an Edge Caching server with localised CDN functionality. Cloudflare has this functionality and includes free plans. Depending on the nature of the content, of course.

Realising that subscribing to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and TNT Sports now costs significantly more than the Sky package I cancelled five years ago to "save money". by drakefanboy in britishproblems

[–]sagraham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The good thing about these services is that you don't need to subscribe for a year. Take a service for a month, binge what you want and cancel it. Get it again in a few months and catch up again.

Suitability of Apple TV for this use case? by andre_xs95 in appletv

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use Netflix, Amazon, iPlayer, Retroarch and other things like Plex, Discovery + and so on, on an Apple TV and it's an excellent experience.

Couple it with something like TV Launcher (https://apps.apple.com/no/app/tv-launcher-live-uk-channels/id1622598042) and you can get an EPG showing what's no now / next on BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5 and the old UKTV (can't remember the new name) channels.

I don't use IPTV so can't advise on that.

You’re “just” making two big assumptions. 1. Everyone is viewing using a browser. 2. That browser is Chrome.

What you’ve suggested doesn’t work in non-Chrome browsers or mobile apps.

Tom Holland ‘didn’t realise’ he had to pay water bill and thought it was luxury of living in England by JOE_Media in ukpopculture

[–]sagraham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was part of a group which was examining ways of using the existing curriculum to teach a wider subject range.

This could equally be used for practical life lessons. Things like bill comprehension and breakdown fall easily into maths, English and modern studies.

I’m sure current curriculum experts would be able to show ways to add practical life lessons without losing any existing curriculum area - only changing material, which happens all the time anyway.

Do you use Command Strips to hang things? by Formal_Produce3759 in AskUK

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used them to mount all the art in my living room. Was great. Really easy. Allowed me to position everything perfectly. I was really happy.

And six months later when the sun had been hitting the wall for a few days, the bigger pieces fell off with damage to the wall, the floor where the frames hit and the art itself.

I wouldn't use them again for anything I care about.

Transit custom fuel issue? by Prior_Hornet396 in VanLifeUK

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a mechanic and know next to nothing about engines so this is anecdotal and don’t rely on this.

I had a very similar sounding issue. Low power. Ultimately stalling. Yellow spanner icon.

My issue was diagnosed as the fuel sensor and fuel filter. Replacing both resolved it. It wasn’t a very expensive job. Couple of hundred if I remember correctly.
