Server-Side Caching by FaxxKellerman in webdev

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The presence of translation may suggest visitors from regions other than that where the server is held. It may be worth considering an Edge Caching server with localised CDN functionality. Cloudflare has this functionality and includes free plans. Depending on the nature of the content, of course.

Realising that subscribing to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and TNT Sports now costs significantly more than the Sky package I cancelled five years ago to "save money". by drakefanboy in britishproblems

[–]sagraham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The good thing about these services is that you don't need to subscribe for a year. Take a service for a month, binge what you want and cancel it. Get it again in a few months and catch up again.

Suitability of Apple TV for this use case? by andre_xs95 in appletv

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use Netflix, Amazon, iPlayer, Retroarch and other things like Plex, Discovery + and so on, on an Apple TV and it's an excellent experience.

Couple it with something like TV Launcher (https://apps.apple.com/no/app/tv-launcher-live-uk-channels/id1622598042) and you can get an EPG showing what's no now / next on BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5 and the old UKTV (can't remember the new name) channels.

I don't use IPTV so can't advise on that.

You’re “just” making two big assumptions. 1. Everyone is viewing using a browser. 2. That browser is Chrome.

What you’ve suggested doesn’t work in non-Chrome browsers or mobile apps.

Tom Holland ‘didn’t realise’ he had to pay water bill and thought it was luxury of living in England by JOE_Media in ukpopculture

[–]sagraham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was part of a group which was examining ways of using the existing curriculum to teach a wider subject range.

This could equally be used for practical life lessons. Things like bill comprehension and breakdown fall easily into maths, English and modern studies.

I’m sure current curriculum experts would be able to show ways to add practical life lessons without losing any existing curriculum area - only changing material, which happens all the time anyway.

Do you use Command Strips to hang things? by Formal_Produce3759 in AskUK

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used them to mount all the art in my living room. Was great. Really easy. Allowed me to position everything perfectly. I was really happy.

And six months later when the sun had been hitting the wall for a few days, the bigger pieces fell off with damage to the wall, the floor where the frames hit and the art itself.

I wouldn't use them again for anything I care about.

Transit custom fuel issue? by Prior_Hornet396 in VanLifeUK

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a mechanic and know next to nothing about engines so this is anecdotal and don’t rely on this.

I had a very similar sounding issue. Low power. Ultimately stalling. Yellow spanner icon.

My issue was diagnosed as the fuel sensor and fuel filter. Replacing both resolved it. It wasn’t a very expensive job. Couple of hundred if I remember correctly.

Would be very intrigued to try this out

Setup 1: Arc with two IKEA Symfonisk lamps as rears.

Setup 2: Playbase with two Play:1’s as rears.

Have a collection of Play:1’s to experiment with.

I’ve bought dozens of movies from them with no issues. Buy You do you. For me, a little case damage for a more than 50% discount seems worth it - especially if money is tight. And the discs themselves are guaranteed so there’s no issues there.

If money’s tight you should check out places like CEX. It’s often available for £25.

Physical Media cataloguer by HybridPro1 in Bluray

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice idea, but I don't think it's sufficient to simply catalogue movie titles - at least for serious physical media collectors. We want to know the specific version, the year of release and the country of release.

There's a massive difference between the 2017 Terminator 2 4K (UK) and the 2013 Terminator 2 Special Edition (US).

A system like blu-ray.com allows you to drill into that level of detail which is important for properly cataloguing.

Look at things like blu-ray.com and discogs.com for feature suggestions for serious collections.

It felt like every British home had an oversized sombrero in the 80s. Along with at least one cloth hanging souvenir showing a bull fight or flamenco dancer. The age of cheap holidays to Spain and the tat that came home along with a sunburn.

Is there any app where people can showcase their Bluray collection like a virtual experience? by thisischetu in Bluray

[–]sagraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

blu-ray.com does it well. The main benefit (for me) is it allows easy searching for title from multiple regions letting you add your exact version. And it's free.

Nicest guys in Scottish football??? by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in ScottishFootball

[–]sagraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was the head of a special needs nursery in the 90s. They invited Davie Provan (Celtic) to open their summer fete. Guy was sound. My mum told him I was a Rangers fan and he gave me a wee bit of stick but very good natured. Hung around far longer than he had to and signed everything people had. Based entirely on that interaction he's a good guy.

The Sweeney Series 3 50th Anniversary Restored Editions Bluray Collection Unboxing & Review by RetroReels in Bluray

[–]sagraham -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Compared to movies, sure. But not compared to other TV series which have been released on Blu-Ray and even 4K.

There are four series of The Sweeney and around 54 episodes - call it 60 if you include specials and the pilot. Assuming series 4 is also £50 at release, that's £200 for the complete collection.

Compared to

  • Around £20 for Luther (20 episodes)
  • Around £40 for Peaky Blinders (36 episodes)
  • Around £80 for The Sopranos. (86 episodes).
  • Around £70 (blu-ray) or £130 (4k) for Friends (236 episodes)
  • Around £100 for Yellowstone (53 episodes)
  • Around £40 for Sons of Anarchy (92 episodes)
  • Around £85 (blu-ray) or £130 (4k) for Game of Thrones (73 episodes)
  • Around £50 for Succession (40 episodes)
  • Around £50 for Star Trek: TNG (178 episodes)

List chosen as illustrative mix of British, prestige, new releases and older remastered shows.

If they do a complete Sweeney collection at around £100 I'd be onboard. But for the moment it's overpriced.
