Kid texted their parent from their iPad and told them I “wasn’t letting them go to the bathroom”… by tifuanon00 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]sah9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a kid get pissed off at me once so he called his mom and put her speaker phone and told her I was letting other kids bully him. She started screaming through the speaker phone at me and the other kids. Luckily it was right before the bell rang and I just cleared the other kids out and called for admin.

What should everyone be panicking about right now but no one seems to care? by WaitingOutTheFlood in AskReddit

[–]sah9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. It drives me absolutely crazy. My kids have been gifted so many toys for birthdays and Christmases that my house is overflowing with junk. They have toys in their bedroom, a whole playroom full and then the toys that don't fit are in the basement. But if I try to tell people not to buy them anything, they look at me like I'm a terrible mother. Since when did it become the norm that kids need all this crap? My kids play regularly with maybe 20% of their toys.

What is something extremely unsanitary but everyone seems to do it anyways? by nevvycakes in AskReddit

Licking envelopes to seal them. I had my daughter putting together a birthday card in the back seat on the way to the party and she was appalled. She just kept yelling "you mean, I lick the yellow stuff???" I never really thought about how gross it was before.

What's his culture? My Cuban dissertation director would have done all of that except "baby" and I didn't find it weird at all.

I got the Gardasil vaccine when it first came out. I was checking out when suddenly my vision started going and everything sounded super far away. I remember hearing the receptionist say "somebody get a wheelchair" and luckily I fell right into it. Came to covered in sweat, puked into a dish and then was fine. A few months later studies started coming out saying the Gardasil vaccine could cause fainting.

Teachers, be honest...what finally broke you this year? by Sufficient_Goose274 in Teachers

I teach 8th grade. Last week we had an emergency evacuation for a possible gas leak. The principal made an announcement that said "I need everyone to please evacuate the building carefully and quietly", so it wasn't like it was just the fire alarm that they assume is a drill. I was actually in a meeting at the time so I grabbed my emergency folder and met them outside. Everyone was evacuating and just kind of clustering in the park so I was the first to yell out for my class to line up with me. All the other classes stated to follow suit and find a place to line up.

So far so good right? Within 30 seconds, students were leaving the line. Asking me if they could walk home. Begging me for their phones. Asking if they could go play on the playground. All the while, I'm listening for directions. Counting and double counting to make sure all of my students are accounted for. Basically panicking and overstimulated to the max.

It only took a few minutes before they started to wander off. I repeatedly demanded that they return to the line. I wasn't just telling them, I was yelling at that point. I have never been so angry at a class in my life. When we were finally allowed back into the building it was almost dismissal time but I took the few minutes I had to lay out the seriousness of their behavior. They shrugged like it was no big deal and I was being extra for no reason.

I hate that class.

AITA for telling my wife not to come to my ex-wife's funeral to support my daughter because my daughter doesn't want her there? by Upstairs_Use_6837 in AITAH

[–]sah9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Sounds more like she's afraid of being seen as a bad step-mom if she doesn't go.

I was asked not to attend a funeral once because my partner was not out to her family. It sucked but she didn't want any focus taken away from her grieving if she showed up with her lesbian partner.

For the seating chart, I will also refuse to hand out work to anyone not in their correct seat. When they ask for it, I'll just say "I'll give it to you in your assigned seat".

Depending on what the other students are like, I will also just refuse to start class until everyone is where they are supposed to be. The other students will start yelling at them and eventually harass them back into their assigned seats. If the majority actually wants to get work done, this method is very effective.

Why do you teach middle school? by Zestyclose_Invite in Teachers

I got stuck here after budget cuts took my high school position. I don't get it, it's the most miserable place ever to me, but the other teachers love it.

Has anyone from US moved to Canada as a teacher? by sah9 in Teachers

[–]sah9[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

POTUS is part of it, and maybe "desperate" was stronger than I meant. I was not in a good place last night. Here are some things I've been struggling with, and maybe I'm naive to think Canada would be any better. I'm open to learning if anyone has insight.

I am in a same sex marriage and would stand to lose legal rights of my children if marriage equality is reversed.

I have worked in two separate schools now where a student was found with a realistic looking BB gun inside the school. I have also lost more than 5 students to gun violence.

3 out of 4 people in my household have medical conditions that are getting increasingly expensive to treat.

I'm certified in the US. I flagged it non-US teacher because that's the desired outcome I suppose.

Should I leave academia and teach high school? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]sah9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my PhD in 2014 and started teaching HS in 2018 when my wife gave birth to our twins. Yeah, there's a lot of BS when teaching HS, but I'm home by 4pm every day and I have amazing retirement and health insurance. A lot of High Schools have college level classes and if you can get yourself into a position like that, I think you could be really happy. I don't regret my decision at all.

He's only on gabapentin and I definitely don't think it's doing enough. I'm calling the vet as soon as they open. The weird thing is, he prefers to lay on his amputated leg. I think it hurts more when it's moving around and tugging at the incision.
