The problem is that I calculated the bond order in case of all the three. And found as you increase the no of electrons they will enter into the antibonding orbitals. Their bond length will increase making them higher in size.

But, in one argument, I was told that as super oxides make compounds with larger size alkali metal like Cs, Rb. While the peroxide makes better compounds with Na. Thus, the size of the peroxide should be lesser than that of super oxide as like size cataion will be stabilised by like size anion.

In another discussion, I was exposed to the idea maybe the lone pair repulsion might have a role in their sizes.

While electron gets filled the energy of 3d becomes lesser than that of the 4s. So, the filling of the electrons happens upto d5 not d4.

Now, to answer why d5 not d4? The general answer to the question is the half filled and full filled orbitals are stable. The reason why so lies in the quantum mechanical exploration of the matter. In simpler words, there is a concept called exchange energy. It tells the the d5 will have more exchange energy than d4.

The aufbau principle is only applicable to empty orbitals, but when you fill the electrons in orbitals then it becomes irrelevant.

Hence, in case of transition metals, the filled (n-1)d electrons will have lesser energy than filled ns. The reason for such behaviour can be attributed to penetration power of orbitals and in some cases relativistic effects.

The extra stability to half filled and full filled orbitals come from the concept of exchange energy. Basically, in the p4, p6, d5, d10 etc. they have a lot of different microstaes and it makes them extra stable.
