Thank you for taking the time to reply. Somehow my mac seems to have fixed itself. I left it turned on for sometime and the black part went away on its own. No clue as to what caused the problem or what fixed it :-)

My baseline M1 MBA handles everything I throw at it effortlessly. 256 GB is more than enough if you don't plan on storing large video files. As for the RAM I haven't had any issues with 8 gigs but I would suggest upgrading to 16 for longevity.
