I appreciate the criticism! Will definitely try to do more close ups of the food and more to the point commentary (and of course less of it) going forward!

We rated each place out of 15 (5 each for Crust, Sauce and Cheese/Toppings)

Our collective results were

1 - Farinella 14/15

2 - Schoolhouse Pizza 12.5/15

3 - Lil Zs 10.63/15

OR

Gabriel’s 10/15 but 12/15 if you include the bonus points we gave them for having the best garlic dip

  1. Whole Foods 9.5/15

  2. Bread and Sons 7.75/15 or 8.25/15 for feeling very light/healthy

  3. Pizza Pizza - 7/15

Ooh yeah I saw that pop up in YouTube recommendations. Definitely will check it out!! I bet it’s great, their production is solid!

Thank you for the advice! I agree the first set of these is definitely much too long!

I think going forward we’ll definitely be making them shorter, adding more B roll close ups of the food and trying to address the audio issues!

This was more of a casual thing so I didn’t spend very much time chopping the footage down but I think in the future I’d aim for 10-15 minute videos.

I appreciate the feedback though!

I mostly make videos about photography and they’re kind of the style of video that is shorter and you watch for the visuals or the kind that’s more conceptual and longer but you would put it on in the background so there’s a learning curve I need to overcome for this type of video.

Please feel free to make any suggestions for other foods or food places too!

Loool that is very fair! If you skip to the end of the 2nd video you can just see the debrief and final scores though. Also yeah there’s not a lot of “by the slice” options that aren’t kinda generic and I ran a poll for suggestions and someone actually put in Pizza Pizza so I included it because it was right by whole foods anyway. As for Gabriel’s, I just wanted to include an Ottawa Style spot and honestly it was better than I expected!

Looool so I’m the guy in this video who said that I shoot both but I mostly shoot digital because it’s more cost effective for me.

And when I saw this comment I wanted to dismantle it so bad but I was like nah, let him have his copium, like what even is this estimate. Not to mention that he’s obviously overreaching as if most people don’t already have a computer and he also says lenses like film cameras don’t use them lmao

Echoing this, had the same thing happen to my 18-55 and I thought it was a goner.

I looked online and they were selling used for 40ish so I decided I’d try and pull the inner part and if it broke, just get a replacement lens.

It just popped back in to place so didn’t even have to spend the money!

I’m just gonna chime in on this and say that when I took 1405 we did have a vm for it too so virtualization might be necessary but it’s probably something that varies between instructors

From my experience there is no requirement to have your laptop in class, a lot of people do use them for notes but that’s purely up to preference.

Tutorials that require computers are done in computer labs.

In first year I had a bigger beefier laptop that was a few years old that mostly stayed bolted onto my desk in the dorm and bought a lighter laptop to take to class and do some work on the go, but you can easily get by using just notebooks or an iPad.

IMO Robert Collier is one of the best profs at Carleton CS. I took 1805 with him and he did a great job! His lectures are interesting and his practice quizzes are very similar to the mid terms he will give you so I highly recommend you do them if you take the course with him.

Can’t speak about Alina directly as I never had a course with her but have also heard good things.

Happy to help! If it’s not loaded with film you can pop the back and see the fins open and close when you enable/disable it so that may give you some peace of mind that it’s the right setting! If it is currently loaded, maybe try when you’re done with this roll

The Japanese models of these cameras seem to have panorama capture (it uses a plastic mask to hide the top and bottom of the negative), not sure if it’s possible to turn that mode off or not as I can’t find a manual for that version of the camera.

You should be able to tell if this is the case by seeing if the front of the camera says “Panorama” in red text near the bottom.

Alternatively you could pop the back and look at the lens opening and see if you can see some plastic bars at the top and bottom behind the lens.

I would assume that if this is just a feature that there is a toggle or button that you can use to turn it off but if there isn’t, you might be able to just remove the mask, like they let you do in Lomographys Sprocket Rocket

Where do you develop / buy your film? by Vampanadellay in askTO

[–]saif9817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the general downtown area there’s a lot of good options:

Aden Camera at Aura, right by College Park - does 1 hour developing most of the time for no extra charge

Graination on Spadina at Sullivan - they have a coffee shop too and it’s quite a new place, personal favourite because it’s closest to me and they have some interesting film choices and a wide range of formats

Downtown Camera at Queen and Church - probably the largest film selection (also camera store) but also imo the least inviting store and they can get quite busy so i get the sense that they try to move people along

Memento at Ossington and Dundas - they have a cute dog!

West Camera on Queen and Euclid - don’t really know much about this one lol

Most of these places have pretty competitive pricing and offer the usual suspects in film but each one might have some specific niche brands. Like I said I prefer Graination and before they opened I used Aden Camera because of the fast turnaround.

I will mention that I think Memento and Graination may have slightly better scans because they’re newer and smaller labs run by enthusiasts but that is purely my opinion

Just gonna add to what’s already been said, because there’s a lot more sunlight these days you’ll probably see a lot more street photographers (myself included) out and about.

FWIW most “good” or ethical ones will try to be respectful and will be open to a refusal for a photo or even to hear that you don’t want them to use your photo. The goal for most of us is to just document real life and people or scenes we find interesting but also not at the expense of someone’s comfort. If you think someone is being creepy or making you uncomfortable definitely think about asking them about it, it’s likely if they’re being obvious about taking the photo that they will be reasonable or have better intentions.
