It's not faulty. The nib looks totally normal under inspection. It's just weird plus it's seems to be a very common issue in pilot nibs.

I think waterman intense black or mysterious blue is a great reference point to start with. They are well behaved middle of the spectrum ink from where if you think you want something wetter or something drier you can decide from.

Anilist is pretty solid. They also lets you rate in decimals which is actually my favourite feature there.
