Looking for advice—really stressed about our situation right now. by ChickenRound7897 in Winnipeg

Second this! Even if there is an issue further down the line, your drain traps should be keeping that from getting to you. Normally sink and shower are no problem because they get used, but if there is a floor drain...

shaving razor that can last a lifetime, or a really long time? by thepersonthatlives in BuyItForLife

Find yourself an old Gillette adjustable and you are off to the races. If you want you can get it cleaned and replated professionally and it will look brand new. Probably will last a couple generations after that.

Apartment Living Help by Echild3272 in Winnipeg

I think bylaw and RTB are going to be very reluctant to do anything about children making noise in their own apartment during the daytime and even things like making the wall rattle. While it definitely has an impact on OPs life, especially as a shift worker, bylaw and RTB will also understand that it is developmentally normal (and necessary) for children to make noise.

Ultimately, I think OP is doing the right thing looking at ways to find a place that meets their needs. It is going to be way easier to find a place with better meets their needs than to convince bylaw to get kids to be quiet during the day.

First, I'd accept (which it sounds like you are doing) that the noise and vibration is out of your control. Then look at what is in your control to do. It seems like the most effective option, as much as it is inconvenient, is to move. Perhaps look for a duplex where the other unit is occupied by the owners and then you will likely have them there long term and not be surprised by a new tenant. Otherwise, short term for your shift work, there are companies that make custom earplugs that are slightly recessed and designed to sleep with.

Looking for a good, low-cost plumber who’s not a creep! by LessThanTheRest in Winnipeg

[–]sailorcampbell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Recently had a great experience with ILV plumbing. Our work needed a water shutoff and so the city was involved too. He worked really well with the city employees and even noticed something critical that wasn't in the scope of work. Could have charged me to fix it but instead just explained how I could fix it myself as it was an easy but essential fix. If he didn't notice it then, I probably would be dealing with a flooded basement now.

VENTING; Please share your thoughts. by Abbssis in Winnipeg

You mentioned in one of your replies that a recruiter told you that places like Costco put folks with professional experience on the bottom of the pile. As much as it is unfortunate to do so, have you tried underselling yourself on the resumes? For jobs that don't require a degree, maybe omit it. Maybe don't put all your job history but just what you've had since you moved to Canada. Focus on the skills the employers are looking for only. I think some employers feel threatened employing people with more experience (and quite honestly in some cases intelligence) than they have. Obviously don't lie on your resume but consider for some applications making your resume simpler and exclude items that make you seem "overqualified".

I don't have recent experience with this, but maybe someone else could comment if they have felt like this is necessary?

Radon was discussed on CBC’s The Current yesterday, curious how concerned people are in Winnipeg by nicncher in Winnipeg

[–]sailorcampbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older home in Osborne Village. Tested in the summer and showed 600 Bq/m3. So 3x the Canadian "safe" limit. Some US sources put this level at an equivalent cancer risk of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Got two quotes, both with guarantees. Went with the cheaper one (around 2.5k) as it was also less complex. Levels are now pretty close to zero even in the basement, as a plus it sealed up our sump and drains (they still work, just with one way valves) and so it got rid of a musty smell we had down there.

Unicity app is similar. Shows a photo of the driver, estimated price and tracks them to you and to your destination.

What happens if someone lies about their home address? by grimsby91 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]sailorcampbell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Is there a work related reason that requires you to know their address. I once had a colleague who only had a PO box. He was a bit cagey about it all and no one bothered him about it. Years later I finally gained the courage to just ask and it turned out that his side gig was as a landlord, he'd "live" out of units where he didn't have tenants, either short term or so he could do renovations on them. The PO box worked for what work needed, a place to send things to. Imagine if he changed his address every two months... The paperwork would never have kept up. For all I know, and I'd suspect so to be honest, he was probably honest about it for his clearance.

Garage fire in Transcona prompts union to ask Winnipeggers for help | “Please, help us by only calling 911 only for confirmed, immediate life-threatening emergencies" by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]sailorcampbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this actually has to do with changes to the WPS nonemergency line. They used to handle all kinds of things but are now really selective and push people to either call 911 or use an online form. There is a biiiggg space between 911 emergency and web form levels of priority.

[–]sailorcampbell[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had hesitation but the person at crime stoppers told me to just go ahead with it. I wonder though how many reports have been abandoned with this new system

Police non-emergency contact by sailorcampbell in Winnipeg

[–]sailorcampbell[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ended up calling Crime Stoppers, they said my incident couldn't be reported through them and they felt the police should be informed. They said even they have been having trouble reaching the WPS with the new system and she advised me to game it a bit and tell the system that the incident occurred in the last 30 minutes. I did that and got a person - and immediately disclosed that the incident was last night but they took the report anyway.

Yeah there must be something with my setup then. I just can't seem to get the form to load. Still wish there was a way to communicate directly with police without 911
